Prepared for Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program Arlington, VA 22203 ERDC TR-06-13 ii Abstract: Access to live-fire training ranges is vital in maintaining the readiness of our Armed Forces. Understanding the nature of residue deposition and fate is critical to ensuring sound management of ranges. The objective of this project was to characterize residues of high explosives on training ranges. Residues were evaluated by sampling on various types of ranges across the U.S. and Canada. Deposition from high-order and low-order detonations, demolition, including blow-in-place, was charac- terized. Environmental transport parameters were developed to support estimates of site-specific source terms for risk assessment and ground- water models. Protocols were developed for characterizing soils containing the highly distributed solid formulations typical of ranges. Results demon- strated that residues are specific to range activities. Demolition areas, low- order detonations sites, and firing positions have great potential for accumulation of residues. Demolition typically generates small areas of relatively high concentrations. Low-order detonations generate primarily large solid particles reflecting the predetonation composition. Artillery impact areas tend to have widely distributed, low concentrations. Firing positions may exhibit high concentrations of propellants. This project defines the characteristics, distribution, and potential environment trans- port of explosives residues on training ranges and provides a scientific basis for development of reasonable control measures.     A Simplified Guide to Explosives Analysis Introduction A backpack left on a crowded city street. A gunman’s apartment. A meth lab in an abandoned building. These are all areas where explosives have been found ― ready to detonate, endangering lives and property. In today’s law enforcement environment, officers are more sensitive than ever to the possible existence of explosive devices. The bomb squads who respond to these situations are highly trained to identify explosives and to dispose, disrupt or render them safe. In a situation where an explosion has occurred, investigators will scour the area to piece together clues to help identify the type of device used and gather all available physical evidence or witness testimony that could help lead to the bomber. Fragments of circuit boards, fingerprints, even pieces of pet hair have been used to help narrow the investigation and nab a perpetrator. Principles of Explosives Analysis Explosives are used for a variety of legitimate applications from mining to military operations. However, these materials can also be used by criminals and terrorists to threaten harm or cause death and destruction. Bombs can be either explosive or incendiary devices, or a combination of the two. An explosive device employs either a liquid, a powder, or a solid explosive material; an incendiary device is flammable and is intended to start a fire. Explosives are classified according to the speed at which they react. High explosive materials, such as dynamite, Trinitrotoluene (TNT), C-4 and acetone peroxide, react at a rate faster than the speed of sound in that material (TATP), causing a loud detonation.

Combustion of these propellants are typically incomplete under these conditions in the field, resulting in residues deposited on the soil surface, such as nitroglycerine and dinitrotoluenes. To better assess the amount of contaminants released during this process, burning tests were conducted with propellant bags from 105- and 155-mm munitions used for howitzer guns. Three different “activities” or burning tests were performed to achieve this study, which are described here. Residual 2,4- and 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNTs) were analysed in all collected samples. Propellant bags not used during the training exercise are destroyed on-site by open burning. For example, the firing of 30,000 rounds of 105-mm ammunition results in the burning of approximately 20,000 kg of single base propellant.
