Emily Savage Virtue and Vice in Juvenal's Satires Thesis Advisor: Dr. William Wycislo Spring 2004 Acknowledgments My sincerest thanks go to Dr. Wycislo, without whose time and effort this project would have never have happened. Abstract Juvenal was a satirist who has made his mark on our literature and vernacular ever since his works first gained prominence (Kimball 6). His use of allusion and epic references gave his satires a timeless quality. His satires were more than just social commentary; they were passionate pleas to better his society. Juvenal claimed to give the uncensored truth about the evils that surrounded him (Highet 157). He argued that virtue and vice were replacing one another in the Roman Empire. In order to gain better understanding of his claim, in the following paper, I looked into his moral origins as well as his arguments on virtue and vice before drawing conclusions based on Juvenal, his outlook on society, and his solutions. Before we can understand how Juvenal chose to praise or condemn individuals and circumstances, we need to understand his moral origins. Much of Juvenal's beliefs come from writings on early Rome and long held Roman traditions. I focused on the writings of Livy, Cicero, and Polybius as well as the importance of concepts such as pietas andjides. I also examined the different philosophies that influenced Juvenal. The bulk of the paper deals with virtue and vice replacing one another. This trend is present in three areas: interpersonal relationships, Roman cultural trends, and religious issues. First, Juvenal insisted that a focus on wealth, extravagance, and luxury dissolved the common bonds between citizens (Courtney 231). -

The author, who wrote under the name of Irenaeus Agnostus, was Friederich Grick, perhaps one of the most peculiar participants in the catalogue of publications about the Brotherhood which came out in the first couple of decades of the century. Grick was a private tutor in Altdorf near Nuremberg. -

Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological. -

Ovid states that people are right to say that poets are mad. He adds that he persists in sowing seed in a pernicious land. Note the obscene pun. The words damnosa... condere semen humo1mean both “to sow seed in a pernicious land” and “to celebrate semen2 in a pernicious land”. Ovid cel- ebrates sexual poetry (semen = by metonymy sex: cf. Lewis And Short, A Latin Dictionary, s. v. se- men I, 2). 2, 1, 39: fluminaque et montes et in altis proelia silvis montes: fontes v. 1. proelia Merkel: pascua ms. It all starts with a kiss … Hello and welcome to our sex and relationships guide for young lesbian and bisexual women. We are LIK:T the young lesbian and bisexual women’s health project. We make information leaflets; write a magazine 3 times a year and plan brilliant activities and events for young lesbian and bisexual women (14-25 years old) including our infamous annual summer camp! We meet once a month 6.30-9pm (usually the first Monday of the month) at the Lesbian and Gay Centre in Manchester. We run weekly and fortnightly allotment and football groups and run regular arts projects including photography and drama. We are supported by a worker from Manchester Youth Service. We all came together as young people because we felt that there is not enough information out there for people like us, not enough spaces that we can call our own, and lots of people and places that don’t treat us and our relationships as valid or healthy. So we decided to create for ourselves that information and those spaces, all the while focussing on a healthy lifestyle. We want to encourage positive attitudes to being lesbian or bisexual, and we welcome you to join us! What’s it all about then? ABSTRACT Title of Document: PERFORMING CHRISTIAN FEMALE IDENTITY IN ROMAN ALEXANDRIA. Heather Juliussen-Stevenson, M.A., 2008 Directed By: Professor Kenneth Holum, Ph.D., History Department The Christian women of Roman Alexandria are something of a mystery, but they were integral to the transformation of religion. They Christianized the space they occupied, their bodies becoming houses for sanctity. While it is difficult to verify the accuracy of male representations of female subjects, discourse exposes the underlying assumptions upon which gender was understood. Reformed prostitutes, women who traveled to the shrine at Menouthis, collectors of pilgrim flasks from Abu Menas who sat in front of the Virgin Mary fresco at Kom el-Dikka, and virgins who shut themselves away—none of these women may have thought of themselves as men suggested. Yet when men referenced the feminine, they introduced alterity, indicating resistance to a master discourse or even competition among rival discourses. This negotiation, combined with a daily expression of agency through the use of space, reveals how women must have asserted their rights to salvation.
