The Tears of Saint Peter (El Greco, Oslo) The Tears of Saint Peter (El Greco, Oslo) El Greco (meaning âœthe Greekâ), born Domenikos Theotokopoulos, is widely regarded as one of the foremost painters of the Spanish Renaissance. His paintings are renowned for their spiritual intensity and use of radically foreshortened, elongated figures, depicted in often brilliant, unnatural flesh tones. Initially trained in Crete as a Byzantine icon painter, El Greco moved to Italy in 1567, where he studied with the Venetian Renaissance painters Titian and Tintoretto. A decade later he settled in Toledo, Spain, where he spent the rest of his life and painted two of his most celebrated works, Here, Saint Peter raises his tear filled eyes to Heaven, hands clasped in prayer as he repents his denial of Christ in Gethsemane. In the background is Christâ™s empty tomb with Mary and an angel nearby. The artist uses the bright light and flashing sky to heighten the drama of the moment and arouse a spiritual fervour in the viewer. The Tears of Saint Peter. 1580 - 1589. Painted in 1580s, this is the first of several versions of the subject by El Greco. It came from the collection of the Conde de Quinto and was purchased reluctantly by John Bowes in 1869 for 200 francs (about £8). El Greco's work was little appreciated at the time. According to Saint Luke's Gospel, Saint Peter denied Jesus on the night before his death, thus fulfilling Christ's prophecy. This is a picture of hope as well as sorrow, and forgiveness and well as repentance. Of those claims, the Tort Claimants’ Committee estimates that there are approximately 83,807 unique claims if the amended and superseded and multiple claims filed on account of the same survivor are removed. The summary of sexual abuse claims below uses the set of 83,807 of claim for purposes of claims summary below.1 The Tort Claimants’ Committee has broken down the sexual abuse claims in various categories for the purpose of disclosing where and when the sexual abuse claims arose and the identity of certain of the parties that are implicated in the alleged sexual abuse. Attached hereto as Exhibit 1 is a chart that shows the sexual abuse claims broken down by the year in which they first arose. Please note that there approximately 10,500 claims did not provide a date for when the sexual abuse occurred. As a result, those claims have not been assigned a year in which the abuse first arose. Ellis1 ABSTRACT The Bible’s Gospel books offer accounts of the life of Jesus Christ and consequently they have been considered among the most important texts from antiquity onward. This essay uses iconographic methodology and historical contextualization to analyze a selective group of portraits and depictions of the Bible’s four Gospel Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Art historical literature has addressed Evangelist portraits, but has tended to focus on formal characteristics. This essay presents these visual relics in new contexts. The chosen Evangelist portraits come from a variety of sources: thousand-year-old Byzantine lectionaries, medieval illuminated manuscripts produced in the scriptoria of the Abbeys of Cluney and Helmarshausen, and Italian and French missals and books of hours. The essay also examines Northern Renaissance and Symbolist print cycles portraying the martyrdom of the Evangelist John and visions he described in his Apocalypse, or book of Revelation. This brief examination of select exemplars demonstrates the enduring significance of Evangelist portraits in Christian iconography and western art history, and suggests the variety of messages Evangelist portraits can convey. This essay’s findings and conclusions may lead to further, related research concerning the ways theologians and artists have used biblical portraits to comment both on religious and secular issues.

    2019 Saint Peter and Saint Paul EL GRECO From the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg Rome 15 december 2019 - 5 march 2020 2 The show is the second event in a three-year collaboration between the Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti and the famous Russian museum. A prestigious agreement arising from a desire to increase cultural dealings between Italy and Russia, through the exhibition of masterpieces from the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. After the great success of the previous year, when the exhibition of Michelangelo’s Crouching Boy attracted over 22,000 visitors, the 2019 choice is a genuine tribute to the city of Rome. The subjects of the masterpiece – Saint Peter and Saint Paul – are the patron saints of the Italian capital, and their showing at the palazzo rhinoceros established them as “tutelary deities” of the space and, by extension, the city of Rome. The exhibition, promoted by the Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti and the State Hermitage Museum, and organized by Il Cigno GG Edizioni in collaboration con Ermitage Italia and Villaggio Globale International, is akin in ideal terms to the El Greco retrospective held at the Grand Palais in Paris. 3 THE WORK Having entered the collections of the museum on the banks of the Neva in Saint Petersburg in 1911, a gift from Pëtr Pavlovič Durnovo, governor-general of Moscow during the Russian Revolution of 1905, the work is usually on display in the museum’s room of Spanish masterpieces, next to one of the Skylight Halls characterizing the so-called New Hermitage built between 1839 and 1851.
