Title: Dretzka, Jerome Papers Reference Code: Mss-2302 Inclusive Dates: 1909-1963 Quantity: 10 cu. ft. Location: NE, Sh. 048-051 OS LG “D” Abstract: Jerome C Dretzka (1881-1963) served on the Milwaukee County Parks Commission from 1920-1963. During that tenure, from 1926-1952, he served as the Executive Secretary of the Commission and expanded the area of Milwaukee parks considerably. He also served as an officer for the American Institute of Park Executives. He retired in 1952. He was born on December 5, 1881 in Pozen, Poland. His family moved to America when he was five years old and they settled on the south side of Milwaukee. In 1893, his family moved to Cudahy where he continued to reside until his death. He served as the city of Cudahy’s city clerk from 1912-1916. He left this position to manage the real estate holdings of Patrick Cudahy. This knowledge served him well during his time on the Commission and during his tenure the Commission went from owning 680 acres to over 7,000 acres of parks. He also served on the boards of the Milwaukee County Historical Society, New Zoo Conference Committee, Wisconsin Park and Recreation Society, as well as many others. Scope and Content: The bulk of the collection consists of material pertaining to Milwaukee County Park Commission and some of the material pertains to his participation in the American Institute of Park Executives (AIPE).In the form of correspondence, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes and official papers from the Commission. This collection also includes information about various projects that he was involved with including the zoo, Mitchell Conservatory, the Braves, and the Milwaukee County Stadium. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Chitra Ganesh, A Magician and Her Muse, 2011, 9.5 x 36 feet, site-specific installation created for Samtidigt Tennis Palace Museum, Helsinki Transparent Studio: Chitra Ganesh Residency dates: 18 June – 16 July 2013 Open Studio & Artist Talk: Thursday, 11th July 6-9pm Brooklyn, NY --- Transparent Studio at Bose Pacia is pleased to announce the current artist-in- residence, Chitra Ganesh. Her drawing, installation, text-based work, and collaborations seek to excavate and rewrite hidden narratives typically excluded from official canons of history, literature, and art. Her work is inspired by mythology, folklore, sci-fi, Bollywood, comic books and graffiti. During the month long residency, Ganesh will use the space to develop her wall drawings by exploring the use of sculptural elements, printmaking technique and collage ephemera. The public is invited to an Open Studio and Artist Talk on 11th July from 6-9pm. Please contact the gallery to arrange for a visit to the studio between June 18th and July 16th. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Chitra Ganesh received her BA in Comparative Literature and Art Semiotics in 1996 and her MFA from Columbia University in 2002. Ganesh’s work has been exhibited widely at venues including PS 1/MOMA, Brooklyn Museum, the Asia Society, and the Andy Warhol Museum, Fondazione Sandretto in Italy, Nature Morte Berlin, ZKM in Germany, and the Gothenburg Kunsthalle. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Joan Mitchell Awards for Painting and Sculpture, and a John Simon Guggenheim Creative Arts Fellowship. Ganesh will be the 2012-2013 artist-in-residence at New York University’s A/P/A Institute with Mariam Ghani for their work, Index of the Disappeared. -

PRESS RELEASE Donald Baechler Early Work 1980 to 1984 Opens Tuesday November 24 from 6–8 pm Exhibition continues through December 30, 2015 Cheim & Read is pleased to announce an exhibition of Donald Baechler’s early paintings and collages on paper. These works represent the genesis of the artist’s iconic vocabulary of symbols and techniques. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue featuring an essay by David Rimanelli. Between 1980 and 1984, when Baechler was still in his mid-20s, his work was the subject of six solo exhibitions. By the end of the ’80s, his bold, expressive paintings were regarded as some of the most influential of their time—integral to the dialogue between a new generation of New York painters that included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Julian Schnabel. The works currently on view at Cheim & Read embody this pivotal moment in Baechler’s career, when he developed a signature iconography and rose to international renown. Three Figures (Wall Street Week) 1980 graphite, spray enamel and oil-based enamel on paper 42 x 42 in Baechler’s work is known for striking compositions that center big, buoyant, thickly outlined forms on layered surfaces, either built up with paint or dense with collage. His subjects are recognizable the world over— flowers, faces, houses, globes, and other familiar objects take center stage. Isolated and magnified on large-scale canvases, they become emblems for universal themes like identity, sexuality, community, and mortality. But they are also uniquely Baechler’s. There is no -

Although some broad themes emerge in research across the College of Education, Health and Human Development (EHHD), such as facilitating equity in education and health, and promoting wellness for all Montana citizens, a topical theme is difficult to establish. -

July 2005 Volume 36, Issue 3 Court Rules: Historic Designation of Coronado Belt Line Unlawfully Set Aside by City Council SUSAN BRANDT HAWLEY The San Diego Historical Resources Board has declared after careful review that the portion of the Coronado Belt Line railway located in San Diego is a historic site. At the request of the MTDB and Councilmember Ralph Inzunza, the City Council overturned the Board’s desig- nation in 2004 against the recommendations of City staff and the City Manager, with Councilmember Donna Frye as the sole dissenting vote. Save Our Heritage Organisa- tion (SOHO) sued the City because, as City staff pointed out, there was no legal basis to overturn the historic status. (San Diego Superior Court Case GIC837743.) On July 15th, San Diego Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Prager ruled in favor of SOHO, agreeing that the City acted unlawfully and granting a peremptory writ requir- ing the City to set aside its action. (See ruling at www.sandiego.courts.ca.gov.) Photo/Bruce Coons The Coronado Belt Line looped around the San Diego coastline and up the Silver Strand to Coronado as part of the Spreckels railroad empire, contributing to San Diego’s growth and vitality as it linked the City with the harbor and South Bay communities. From 1888 until the mid-20th century, the Belt Line regularly transported residents, visitors, World War I and II military shipments, agricultural products, building materials, and commer- cial and industrial wares through the region. SOHO Executive Director Bruce Coons said, “This is an important precedent proving that the City Council can not arbitrarily overturn historic designations just because they want to approve some ill-advised development scheme.
