INXS’ Kirk Pengilly shaves off iconic Mo to kick-start Movember

NATIONAL: INXS rocker and Movember Ambassador Kirk Pengilly this morning had his 15-year old moustache shaved by wife (and seven-time ASP World Champion) Layne Beachley as part of a World Record attempt and to mark the beginning of this year’s Movember.

As blokes around the country sharpened their razors and shaved down for the 1st of the month, Uppercut Deluxe helped kick off Movember in style today by hosting the Movember World Record for the most cut- throat shaves in one day. The barbers were on-hand at the Beach Road Hotel for the seven-hour attempt to shave over 250 blokes to smash the record.

Kirk, known for his legendary upper lip hair, was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year at 56 years old and through his role as a Movember Ambassador is determined to spread the word about men’s health to encourage blokes to look after their health and take action when they notice something different.

With more men dying from prostate cancer each year than women from breast cancer and suicide being the greatest killer of men aged 15 to 44 years, the Movember Foundation is challenging all men to grow and women to support the Mo for the next 30 days to help spark conversations between men about their health.

Kirk said he was happy to donate his upper lip to the hairy cause, and will be growing his Mo back over the course of the month to raise awareness and funds to help Movember change the face of men’s health.

“Men aren’t as great as women at looking after their wellbeing. Growing a Mo for Movember is a simple way blokes can have an impact on the state of men’s health across the country,” said Kirk.

Paul Villanti, Executive Director of the Movember Foundation, said too many men don’t talk, don’t take action and die too young.

“Men growing moustaches for Movember are helping to generate conversations that lead to blokes talking about the big stuff in their lives and taking action when they need to,” said Villanti.

“This year, Movember’s not just about men growing Mo’s. While the moustache will always be king, we’ve introduced a new way for women to do something tangible for men’s health, by taking on the MOVE fitness challenge,” he added.

MOVE is simple – just MOVE every day of Movember. MOVE is a chance not only for women to do something physical, but also the opportunity to inspire the men in their lives to get active and take control of their physical and mental wellbeing.

This year, men and women are able to join together to help change the face of men’s health by joining the Movember movement.
