Can the differences ever be put aside? With over 4,000 known religions in the world, from traditional faith to new age beliefs, interfaith relationships are very common. For some people faith and religion is instilled from a very early age and usually lasts a lifetime. For others, faith is found later in life. Either way, there is not much that will make these individuals change or compromise their religion and faith…not even meeting the love of their life. Are you currently dating someone who doesn’t share the same religious background as you? Do your family and friends not understand? If you appear between the ages of 18-28 and you want to share the challenges and benefits of being in an interfaith relationship, we want to hear from you. Please email your contact info, recent pictures of you and your loved one, and explanation of your current relationship to [email protected]. True Life wants to experience your interfaith relationship from your point of view. • It Is Easy to Interpret Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five and Anthony
It is easy to interpret Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five and Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange as cynical and pessimistic novels. The profusion of graphic images involving death, gang violence, and war make it difficult to walk away from either text with a hopeful outlook for the future of mankind. Thus, many literary critics label Vonnegut and Burgess as fatalists who argue for an acceptance of deterministic forces that eventually cause humans harm and suffering. However, other critics, such as Liu Hong, Wayne McGinnis, Todd Davis, and Kenneth Womack, all contend that at the end of the day Vonnegut and Burgess offer an opinion of humanity that is hopeful and encouraging. To these critics, the authors ultimately argue that the individual has the ability to determine their own fate in a horrific and often hurtful world. The standard debate concerning these two revolutionary authors has thus been one between a message of either hope or disparagement. It is a debate that has long been discussed among literary critics and continues to be an ever-changing discussion. My contention is that both Vonnegut and Burgess each create a body of work that offers the reader hope, empowerment, and an optimistic outlook of a future that is better than their present, or rather the present setting of their characters. Thus, I agree with critics like McGinnis, who calls Slaughterhouse-Five Vonnegut’s “most hopeful novel to date” (McGinnis 121), or Davis and Womack, who find that A Clockwork Orange’s protagonist ultimately finds a hopeful and optimistic conclusion in embarking “…upon a lifetime of familial commitment and human renewal.” (Davis, Womack 34).

13EXODUS: CONTO E RECONTOS Long walks, incredible journeys: popular fantasies of escape and returning home Caminhadas longas, jornadas incríveis: fantasias populares de fuga e de regresso a casa Anthony Barker University of Aveiro [email protected] Palavras -chave: gulag, fuga, fraude, regresso a casa. Keywords: gulag, escape, fraud, home-coming. When I was 8 years old, I was taken to see a Disney movie called The Incre- dible Journey (1963). It concerns a Canadian family who are given the chance to live and work in England temporarily. In order to do so they have to leave their three pets, two dogs and a cat, in the care of a friend. A mix-up occurs and the animals are lost. What then follows is an immense trek of three pets across the plains and forests of north-west Ontario to be eventually reunited with their now returned owners many months later and nearly 400 kilometers away to the west. Disney began making films of this type (what it called “True-Life Adventures”) in 1953 with the documentary The Living Desert. In 1957, the same film unit swi- tched over to making what it now called, somewhat oxymoronically, “True-Life Fantasies.” The Incredible Journey, based on the 1961 children’s novel of the same name by Sheila Burnford, was the fourth in a sequence of these. To an 8-year-old, the finely-developed homing instincts of cats and dogs were a source of both great delight and perplexity. Even at that age, the story only seemed to have any point, any sense of uplift, if it were true.

  • Chicago (1927)
Closing Night Gala Sunday 26th March | Screening 20:00 Chicago Dir. Frank Urson & Cecil B.DeMille (uncredited) | USA | 1927 | 1h 58m With: Phyllis Haver, Victor Varconi, Virginia Bradford Performing live: Stephen Horne (piano, accordion) & Frank Bockius (percussion) Chicago is the thoroughly modern tale of a publicity hungry, headline grabbing anti-heroine, as addicted to her own reflection as today’s popular culture is to the Selfie. Roxie Hart is the iconic free-spirited 1920’s flapper transformed into a destructively willful, reckless, self-centred and amoral media darling. Taken to the extreme, she’s the troubling threat to the establishment posed by a generation of young women flaunting social conventions, dress codes and manners, enjoying sexual freedom, self-determination and demanding what they most want out of life. Phyllis Haver (1899-1960) plays Roxie to perfection in a sparkling performance of devious charm, ruthless determination and brilliant comic timing. Tonight is a rare opportunity to rediscover her talent and celebrate the work of an almost forgotten star. Haver began her career in cinema accompanying silent films on piano, became a Mack Sennett Bathing Beauty and then got her big break as an actress, appearing in over 35 films for the Sennett Studios from 1916-20 before signing with DeMille-Pathé. She worked with some of the most revered artists of her day including Buster Keaton, Lon Chaney, Howard Hawks, Raoul Walsh and D.W. Griffith. There’s no doubt that Haver’s star quality and comedic flair elevate Chicago above a simple black and white morality tale. Her career defining performance was praised by critics as “astoundingly fine”, an impressive combination of “comedy and tragedy”.

  • From Girlfriend to Gamer: Negotiating Place in the Hardcore/Casual Divide of Online Video Game Communities
FROM GIRLFRIEND TO GAMER: NEGOTIATING PLACE IN THE HARDCORE/CASUAL DIVIDE OF ONLINE VIDEO GAME COMMUNITIES Erica Kubik A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2010 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Amy Robinson Graduate Faculty Representative Kristine Blair Donald McQuarie ii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor The stereotypical video gamer has traditionally been seen as a young, white, male; even though female gamers have also always been part of video game cultures. Recent changes in the landscape of video games, especially game marketers’ increasing interest in expanding the market, have made the subject of women in gaming more noticeable than ever. This dissertation asked how gender, especially females as a troubling demographic marking difference, shaped video game cultures in the recent past. This dissertation focused primarily on cultures found on the Internet as they related to video game consoles as they took shape during the beginning of the seventh generation of consoles, between 2005 and 2009. Using discourse analysis, this dissertation analyzed the ways gendered speech was used by cultural members to define not only the limits and values of a generalizable video game culture, but also to define the idealized gamer. This dissertation found that video game cultures exhibited the same biases against women that many other cyber/digital cultures employed, as evidenced by feminist scholars of technology. Specifically, female gamers were often perceived as less authoritative of technology than male gamers. This was especially true when the concept “hardcore” was employed to describe the ideals of gaming culture.
