Saito Updated Press Email Kikuo Saito: Paintings September 10 – October 24, 2009 Leslie Feely Fine Art is proud to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Kikuo Saito. This will be the artist’s first solo show with Leslie Feely. Kikuo Saito was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1939 and moved to New York City in 1966. He studied at the Art Students League and worked as a studio assistant to many preeminent artists, among them Larry Poons, Kenneth Noland and Helen Frankenthaler. He also worked as a set designer and has worked with such theater luminaries as Jerome Robbins, Peter Brook and Robert Wilson. Before he began to concentrate primarily on painting, Saito was also known for his own poetic theater pieces, which incorporated wordless drama, costumes, light, music and dance. In his paintings, Saito combines the painterly with the calligraphic, sometimes using a fully loaded brush and sometimes tracing thin “written” lines. Rich and seductive painterly gestures interweave over delicate washes and over an almost hidden under-painted grid. Stenciled letters occasionally appear; not only suggesting a different way of seeing or reading, but also adding a sense of structure and resistance to the more freely applied abstract strokes. Saito uses color bravely, suggestively and beautifully, somewhat reminiscent of Monet’s Water Lilies. While sometimes intense, his colors are always balanced. They range from the bright and joyous, the warm and sensual, to the cool and slightly melancholic. While his exquisite color harmonies and gestural configurations at first absorb the viewer’s eye, they in turn culminate and resonate with personal and emotional expression. Kikuo Saito has been exhibiting his paintings since 1976 in many group and solo shows. He was an artist-in-residence at Duke University in 1996 and a visiting professor at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Japan. He currently works out of his studio in downtown New York City. Leslie Feely Fine Art is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Mondays by appointment only. .

Saito had began painting a decade prior, building a steady understanding of traditional Japanese arts alongside contemporary movements such as the Gutai Group, while working for three years in the studio of established traditional painter Sensei Itoh. Landing in San Francisco, Saito traveled to New York by bus, visiting the country’s museums and witnessing its variable and remarkable landscape, confronted by the city’s own topography of signs upon arrival. During his first decade in New York, Saito worked between painting and theater. In many senses, he considered much of life as a performance. For his wordless theater pieces, Saito incorporated ephemeral, nontraditional materials like water and earth with elements of music, movement, and light, drawing inspiration in part from the performance traditions of Kabuki, Noh, and Butoh. These were collaborative works, in which Saito directed dancers and actors while creating stage costumes, sculptural elements, and using his abstract paintings as backdrops. Saito’s theater was well-received and in turn led to collaborations (and further travel) with Robert Wilson, Jerome Robbins, Eva Maier, and Peter Brook. In 1979 he decided to devote his attention entirely to painting, preferring the serene isolation of the studio, where he could physically manipulate paint across ground, over the complex, multi-disciplinary approach behind his theater pieces.

    2020-2021 NEWSLETTER DEPARTMENT OF ART HISTORY THE GRADUATE CENTER, CUNY 1 LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear GC Art History Community, The 2020-21 academic year has been, well, challenging for all of us at the GC, as I imagine it has for you. The building—boarded up in November for the elections—is still largely off-limits to students and faculty; the library is closed; classes and meetings have been almost exclusively virtual; and beyond the GC, many of us have lost friends, family, or jobs due to the pandemic and its repercussions. Through it all, we have struggled to keep our community together and to support one another. I have been extraordinarily impressed by how well students, faculty, and staff in the program have coped, given the circumstances, and am I hopeful for the future. This spring, we will hold our rst in-person events—an end-of-year party and a graduation ceremony for 2020 and 2021 Ph.D.s, both in Central Park—and look forward to a better, less remote fall. I myself am particularly looking forward to fall, as I am stepping down as EO and taking a sabbatical. I am grateful to all of you for your help, advice, and patience over the years, and hope you will join me in welcoming my successor, Professor Jennifer Ball. Before getting too excited about the future, though, a few notes on the past year. In fall 2020, we welcomed a brave, tough cohort of ten students into the Ph.D. Program. They have forged tight bonds through coursework and a group chat (not sure if that's the right terminology; anyway, it's something they do on their phones).

At one pole is the studio, a private place where the artist reigns supreme, making works that will convey a visual experience in a lasting way. At the opposite pole is a public space in which various kinds of artists collaborate to present a multimedia event that unfolds in real time and ultimately will reside only in memory. There is one week left to catch Clifford Ross’s latest work of ecological gran- deur, presented by Ryan Lee Gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan. For his well-known Hurricane series, Clifford Ross tethered himself to the Long Island shore and waded out into the stormy surf, camera in hand. For his later Mountain series, Ross invented the R1, one of the highest resolution cameras in the world. Ross’s work is nature-focused, and always imaginative. His latest exhibition, Clifford Ross: Prints on Wood is no exception. The work is an awe-inspiring introspection on nature’s sublime. On display in Chelsea are ten unique wood panel prints from Ross. Each image is a dramatic crop of Ross’s previous works. This tightened focus calls attention to the magnitude and power of nature; it emphasizes the relevancy in even the smallest of details. And indeed, this is often Ross’s intention with his art: to “recreate nature by virtue of its scale.” The daring multimedia creator is notable for his innovation and often spectacular techniques. The exhibition features paintings ranging from the late 2000’s, highlighting Saito’s use of vibrant color, calligraphic gestural abstractions, and rhythmical brushstrokes. Kikuo Saito was born 1939 in Tokyo, Japan and later immigrated to New York City in 1966, both living and working in SoHo until his death in 2016. During his early years in New York, Saito studied at the Art Students League and acted as studio assistant to artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Poons, and Kenneth Noland. Mainly known as a color field painter, he began to exhibit in the early 1970’s and amassed more than 60 solo exhibitions during his illustrious career. Saito was also known for his theater collaborations with such luminaries as Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Jerome Robbins and, dancer and choreographer, Eva Maier. His productions combined wordless drama in the poetic framework of light, costumes, music, and dance. The choreography of his productions significantly influenced the compositions of his paintings. Saito alternated between painting on the floor and easel– moving the canvas around, which in effect created flooded intervals of color, a very physical process akin to the dances he directed in his on-stage productions. Kikuo Saito was an artist-in-residence at Duke University, a visiting professor at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Japan and a painting instructor at the Art Students League of New York.
