Sus creaciones no se ajustan al modelo tradicional. Incluso encuentra pocas referencias en el contexto de las variaciones temporales más audaces ensayadas por otros directores de la vanguardia internacional. En contraste con esta constante de su obra, Wilson es un artista muy prolífico. Su producción desborda casi todas las disciplinas que ha abordado: performance, teatro, ópera, audiovisual, dibujo, pintura, escultura, diseño... Desde alrededor de 1965, da la impresión de que no ha parado ni un minuto. De hecho, el recuento de su obra completa no podría ocupar menos de cincuenta o sesenta páginas. Y no en vano el curriculum vitae de Wilson elaborado por Geoffrey Wexler, archivista de la Byrd Hoffman Foundation, contenía 1 03 páginas a comienzos de 1 998. Para que tal ingente cantidad de obra fuera posible se ha de trabajar, sin duda, con una asombrosa rapidez. La obra y la vida de Robert Wilson, pues, parecen indisolubles. Quizá como la de todo artista que tiene la suerte de dedicarse por completo a su actividad creadora. Si bien existen muchos —¿infinitos?— grados diferentes de conexión entre el ámbito de la profesión y el de lo personal. En las páginas siguientes aparece un recorrido por la obra de Wilson siguiendo a uno de los expertos en el área, Trevor Fairbrother. Se recogen algunas anécdotas relevantes de su biografía y a modo de ensayo critico se incluyen comentarios acerca de sus trabajos más relevantes, sobre todo al inicio de su carrera cuando se perfilaron las lineas maestras del estilo Wilson) 1.1 Comienzo ecléctico 1941-1965 1941-19 58 Robert Mims Wilson nace el 4 de octubre de 1941 en Waco, Texas. Su padre, abogado de éxito, procedía de una familia acomodada; su madre, criada en un orfelinato, trabajó como oficinista hasta su matrimonio. Varias noches a la semana Wilson, sus padres y su hermana menor se reunían para la cena: una costumbre familiar que Wilson recordaría después. De su madre conserva la imagen de una mujer sentada en silencio, inaccesible y poco afectiva. En la escuela en segundo grado un profesor preguntó a sus alumnos qué les gustaría ser de mayores. Las respuestas fueron: enfermera, ama de casa, bombero... Wilson respondió: “El rey de España”. Extraña pretensión para un niño con problemas (como quedaba reflejado en las observaciones que el profesor 7 hacia de él en las evaluaciones). En el sexto curso ganó el primer premio en un concurso de pintura con el dibujo en tiza de una magnolia. Cuando el Waco News Tribune le preguntó: “Bob Wilson, qué es para ti la cosa más bonita del mundo entero”, respondió: “Una grande y gruesa pata de gato”... “Siempre he sido difícil y cohibido”, comentaría tiempo después. A lo largo de su niñez Wilson sufrió un problema de expresión: le costaba mucho hablar, por lo que comenzó a asistir al Programa Infantil de Teatro de la Universidad de Baylor. Allí toma clases durante varios meses con Miss Byrd Hoffman, quien había sido profesora de danza y después se dedicó a la asistir niños deficientes mentales. Con la ayuda de la señora Hoffman Wilson consigue superar su defecto a la edad de diecisiete años.

Kikuo Saito (1939–2016) was born in Tokyo and moved to New York City in 1966 at the age of 26, curious about the city’s burgeoning artistic movements. Saito had began painting a decade prior, building a steady understanding of traditional Japanese arts alongside contemporary movements such as the Gutai Group, while working for three years in the studio of established traditional painter Sensei Itoh. Landing in San Francisco, Saito traveled to New York by bus, visiting the country’s museums and witnessing its variable and remarkable landscape, confronted by the city’s own topography of signs upon arrival. During his first decade in New York, Saito worked between painting and theater. In many senses, he considered much of life as a performance. For his wordless theater pieces, Saito incorporated ephemeral, nontraditional materials like water and earth with elements of music, movement, and light, drawing inspiration in part from the performance traditions of Kabuki, Noh, and Butoh. These were collaborative works, in which Saito directed dancers and actors while creating stage costumes, sculptural elements, and using his abstract paintings as backdrops. Saito’s theater was well-received and in turn led to collaborations (and further travel) with Robert Wilson, Jerome Robbins, Eva Maier, and Peter Brook. In 1979 he decided to devote his attention entirely to painting, preferring the serene isolation of the studio, where he could physically manipulate paint across ground, over the complex, multi-disciplinary approach behind his theater pieces.

    2020-2021 NEWSLETTER DEPARTMENT OF ART HISTORY THE GRADUATE CENTER, CUNY 1 LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear GC Art History Community, The 2020-21 academic year has been, well, challenging for all of us at the GC, as I imagine it has for you. The building—boarded up in November for the elections—is still largely off-limits to students and faculty; the library is closed; classes and meetings have been almost exclusively virtual; and beyond the GC, many of us have lost friends, family, or jobs due to the pandemic and its repercussions. Through it all, we have struggled to keep our community together and to support one another. I have been extraordinarily impressed by how well students, faculty, and staff in the program have coped, given the circumstances, and am I hopeful for the future. This spring, we will hold our rst in-person events—an end-of-year party and a graduation ceremony for 2020 and 2021 Ph.D.s, both in Central Park—and look forward to a better, less remote fall. I myself am particularly looking forward to fall, as I am stepping down as EO and taking a sabbatical. I am grateful to all of you for your help, advice, and patience over the years, and hope you will join me in welcoming my successor, Professor Jennifer Ball. Before getting too excited about the future, though, a few notes on the past year. In fall 2020, we welcomed a brave, tough cohort of ten students into the Ph.D. Program.
