ARAN KNITS from stitchcraft

For centuries, people in the fishing villages around the coasts of the British Isles have been beautiful textured and patterned sweaters. In the Aran Isles, off the West coast of Ireland, the style of these traditional sweaters has developed into highly textured garments with all-over patterning. Each traditional stitch pattern has a special name and significance, some recalling everyday things in the lives of the fishing communities and others being directly traceable to 3,000 year old Celtic culture, when symbols were of religious importance.

In an age where mass-produced goods are all around us, the charm of this type of hand knitted sweater is unbeatable. In this book, the second in our Special Series from Stitchcraft, we have chosen a collection of beautiful hand-knits in Aran style for all the family, using both traditional and combinations of traditional stitches. Each one is knitted in Batons Capstan, a specially designed for Aran knitting, and now including many bold, bright colours in its range.
