Al-Kindi, a Ninth-Century Physician, Philosopher, And
AL-KINDI, A NINTH-CENTURY PHYSICIAN, PHILOSOPHER, AND SCHOLAR by SAMI HAMARNEH FROM 9-12 December, I962, the Ministry of Guidance in Iraq celebrated the thousandth anniversary of one of the greatest intellectual figures of ninth century Baghdad, Abui Yuisuf Ya'qiib ibn Ishaq al-Kind? (Latin Alkindus).1 However, in the aftermath ofthis commendable effort, no adequate coverage of al-Kindl as a physician-philosopher ofardent scholarship has, to my knowledge, been undertaken. This paper, therefore, is intended to shed light on his intel- lectual contributions within the framework of the environment and time in which he lived. My proposals and conclusions are mainly based upon a study of al-Kindi's extant scientific and philosophical writings, and on scattered information in the literature of the period. These historical records reveal that al-Kindi was the only man in medieval Islam to be called 'the philosopher of the Arabs'.2 This honorary title was apparently conferred upon him as early as the tenth century if not during his lifetime in the ninth. He lived in the Abbasids' capital during a time of high achievement. As one of the rare intellectual geniuses of the century, he con- tributed substantially to this great literary, philosophic, and scientific activity, which included all the then known branches of human knowledge. Very little is known for certain about the personal life of al-Kind?. Several references in the literary legacy ofIslam, however, have assisted in the attempt to speculate intelligently about the man. Most historians of the period confirm the fact that al-Kindl was of pure Arab stock and a rightful descendant of Kindah (or Kindat al-Muliuk), originally a royal south-Arabian tribe3. -

Volume 93 Number 881 March 2011 The Layha for the Mujahideen:an analysis of the code of conduct for the Taliban fighters under Islamic law Muhammad Munir* Dr.Muhammad Munir is Associate Professor and Chairman,Department of Law, Faculty of Shari‘a and Law, International Islamic University, Islamabad. Abstract The following article focuses on the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Rules for the Mujahideen** to determine their conformity with the Islamic jus in bello. This code of conduct, or Layha, for Taliban fighters highlights limiting suicide attacks, avoiding civilian casualties, and winning the battle for the hearts and minds of the local civilian population. However, it has altered rules or created new ones for punishing captives that have not previously been used in Islamic military and legal history. Other rules disregard the principle of distinction between combatants and civilians and even allow perfidy, which is strictly prohibited in both Islamic law and international humanitarian law. Accordingly, it is necessary to extract the reason from the texts and attach it to the developments of contemporary reality to prove the ruling, and since the subject of the use of knowledge in which the word of majesty (Allah) is used. -

Not much is known about Fārābī's early years. He studied logic with the Nestorian Christian Yuḥannā ibn Ḥaylān (died: circa 932) in Marw and then in Baghdad. In Baghdad, Fārābī studied Arabic and was therefore able to participate in the philosophical salons of Baghdad and to make use of Arabic philosophical and scientific works. He then went to Constantinople with his teacher during the reign of the ʿAbbāsid caliph al‐Muktafī (902–908) or early during the reign of Caliph al‐Muqtadir (908–932). He returned to Baghdad between 910 and 920, spending two decades there writing and teaching philosophy and allied sciences. In 942, Fārābī left Baghdad, probably to escape its instability, going first to Damascus and then to Egypt. He later returned to Damascus to join the court of the Ḥamdānid Prince Sayf al‐Dawla but died a year later. Fārābī is known primarily for his contributions to Islamic philosophy; he was known as “The Second Teacher” (al‐muʿallim al‐thānī), the First Teacher being Aristotle. His works include commentaries on Aristotle and Plato; introductory philosophical works; treatises on logic, metaphysics, political philosophy; and other philosophical disciplines; a treatise on the classification of knowledge, and works in the mathematical sciences, which include astronomy and music.
