  • Venetian Jewel Heist Gentleman Thief Gives Expert View
    • The Guardian Saturday 17 November 2018 34 World following the robbery of €10m worth of jewels during an exhibition in Basel, Switzerland, in 2011. The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, said that justice had been delivered “to those who thought they could commit a crime in Venice and get away with it”. Pipino, who spent 20 years in jail for 3,000 art thefts across Venice, believes the suspects had help from a collaborator within the palace, though the police have not said this. Pipino noted: “Unless the pieces are removed and sold separately, they are unsellable as they are.” He said he had had no intention of selling the painting he took from the Doge’s Palace. He was working on behalf of Felice Maniero, the boss of the Mala del Brenta organised crime group, who wanted it as a ransom for the release of his cousin from prison. The tactic worked: the painting was returned and his cousin set free within a couple of weeks. Pipino insisted that he only ever “robbed from the rich to give to the poor” or stole to get a favour, for example obtaining a coveted berth guard’s movements. Mineralogists and geographers have written about them, as have historians and economists and students of art and fashion. They each shine their light on a different aspect of this source of luminous radiance. But who would venture to describe the entire complicated worldwide system starting in the diamond mines of Africa and ending with the consumers of Western metropolises? Social scientists? To them, the world of diamonds has remained a mysterious arena.

  • Fight Against Organized Crime, Corruption and Judicial Cooperation in the See Region
Fight against organized crime, corruption and judicial cooperation in the See region Honorable Prime Minister, Minister of Justice, Public Prosecutor, Head of Delegates. On behalf of the Austrian Minister of the Interior Madam Mikl-Leithner I wish to thank you for the invitation to speak at this important conference against organized crime, corruption and to promote judicial cooperation in the SEE region. The fight against organized crime is not only one of the main goals of the EU, but also for the Western Balkan Countries. The Countries of the Western Balkans with their complexities are considered a breeding ground for setting up and establishing criminal organizations that affect the whole world. This is aggravated by the current negative economic situation in many of these states. Combating criminal structures efficiently and sustainably is only possible through intensive cooperation between the states affected which also includes the Member States of the European Union and the states in the Balkans. To achieve this end, enhanced professional cooperation is needed at all levels including investigators as well as law enforcement authorities. Let me give you an example: I have just come from the opening of 7th operational working group meeting on Project Pink Panther in Vienna. The delegates come from Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.A.E., and the US. For over a decade, European countries, the US, the Emirates and Kuwait have experienced a big problem which has been given the nickname “Pink Panther”. Criminals are committing brutal jewelry robberies or burglaries in the center of the cities in busy shopping streets without any respect or fear of the police.
