  • Inman, John (1935-2007) John Inman As Mr
Inman, John (1935-2007) John Inman as Mr. by Linda Rapp Humphries in Are You Being Served?. Undated BBC publicity photo. Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2007 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Acclaimed comic actor John Inman gained international fame for his endearing portrayal of the fey salesman Mr. Humphries on the television series Are You Being Served?. He was also a perennial favorite on the pantomime circuit in Britain, specializing in traditional "dame" roles in which he appeared in drag. John Inman grew up in Lancashire in northwest England. His parents were hairdressers and owned several shops in Preston, where Inman was born on June 28, 1935. About a decade later the family moved to the seaside town of Blackpool, where they ran a boardinghouse. As a small child, Inman enjoyed making costumes and putting on little shows for his neighbors. As a schoolboy, he was an enthusiastic participant in plays. "I had a headmaster who was sensible. He knew that acting was what I was going to do with my life, so when the town's professional theater needed a boy and got in touch with the school, they got me," Inman recalled. With his stage debut at thirteen, Inman had found his calling. He quit school two years later and began doing whatever he could--"sweeping up, making tea, moving scenery"--at the theater. To support himself, Inman became a window-dresser at a menswear store in Blackpool. After two years, however, he moved to Britain's capital since "even the shows done in Blackpool were cast in London." He found another window-dressing job at a Regent Street store, but acting opportunities were scarce until a fellow employee, Kenneth Kendall (who later became well known as a newsreader on British television), invited him to join a touring company.

ACT 1: Grace Brothers Department Store ACT 2: The Costa Plonka, Spain From The Boardroom Growing up in the 1970’s, family time for me was laughing along with British comedies on television. Dad’s Army, George & Mildred, The Good Life, Some Mother’s Do Have Em’, and It Aint Half Hot Mum all brought the sound of fun and laughter to the lounge room. Are You Being Served? was one of the best, created and written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft for the BBC. The show follows the misadventures and mishaps of the staff, as well as various interludes with customers of the retail ladies' and gentlemen's clothing floor departments of a fictional London department store called Grace Brothers. This television show loved by all has been rated 20th in The Top 50 Best Ever British Sitcoms. To capitalise on the success of the show a stage version of the show was written and played at the Winter Gardens Theatre, Blackpool for a very successful season over the summer of 1976. When deciding on a play to bring to the STG stage as my directorial debut, it was always Are You Being Served? A fantastic ensemble cast has brought Are You Being Served? to our stage, adding their own twist to the characters you know and love whilst paying homage to the originals actors.

  • Are You Being Served?’
Charing Guild of Players Present ‘Are You Being Served?’ By Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft In the Church Barn, Charing May 2014 This Production is dedicated to the memories of Michael Cowdry and Rayner Missing £1.00 CHARING GUILD OF PLAYERS Patron The Rev Sheila Cox Chairman Marian White Deputy Chairman Carolyn Banham Honorary Secretary Valerie Parsons Honorary Treasurer Michael Headley Committee Anton Banham, John Easun, Nick Hawley, Karen Wright, Jean Latter, Gill Magson Honorary Life Members Bert Banham This Production.. ...was initially planned for last November (you may recall) but as the saying goes, ‘the best laid plans of mice and men …’ etc etc!! Practically all the credit must go to our wonderful Producer/Director Gill Magson, for her great determination and perseverance, in finally get- ting this production cast, built and on-stage, with the help, obviously, of our tremendous back stage crew, who have once again excelled themselves!! Particularly with the wonderful ‘Pentehouses’ by Jean Latter and Anne Winograd! I don’t think many people appreciate just how exhausting and stressful it can be wearing the Producer’s hat!! However, despite the many bumps along the way, I’m sure Gill will agree, that we have also managed to have ‘such fun’ in rehearsals with lots of laughs!! We certainly hope that the fun we have had rehearsing, shines through in the performances!! Enjoy! - CAB (Thanks also to Willow Farm of Long Length, Ashford for the loan of the green chairs.) ‘Are You Being Served?’ - a potted History The idea for the show came from Jeremy Lloyd's brief period in the early 1950s working at Simp- sons of Piccadilly, a clothing store which traded for over 60 years until 1999.

  • ARE YOU BEING SERVED? Adelaide
www.theatreguide.com.au Supporting live theatre in South Australia PO Box 738 [email protected] MODBURY SA 5092 ABN : 93 297 960 525 ARE YOU BEING SERVED? Adelaide Repertory Theatre The Arts Theatre Until 9 Apr 2011 Review by Theresa Dolman “Are You Being Served?” is a stage adaptation of the well-known television comedy series. We know the setting, the characters, and the jokes. So when the curtain goes up we expect to see the third floor of the Grace Brothers’ Department Store, with Mr Humphries mincing "I'm free!", Mrs Slocombe reporting on her pussy, and Captain Peacock struggling to maintain a dignified order. The script, by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, who wrote most of the original television series, had all of this. The production by Adelaide Rep had almost none of it. What we see appears to be the aftermath of the Grace Brothers’ closing down sale - a couple of old desks, some incomplete mannequins, an old cash register in the middle of the floor, and no stock in sight. This sparse setting makes it difficult to believe the real story - that Grace Brothers is doing so well that it is going to send the entire staff of the third floor on a well-deserved holiday to the Don Bernardo Hotel in Spain - albeit a one star hotel. Despite the poor setting and the often poor direction by Ian Maitland, many of the seasoned cast give good performances. The main two female roles are well executed by Georgia Dodd as Miss Brahms and Sue Wylie as Mrs Slocombe, with some wonderful one-liners and facial expressions.

Hull History Centre: Records relating to the Hull New Theatre L DTNT Records relating to the Hull New Theatre 1939- 2008 Historical Background: The New Theatre which stands on Kingston Square, Hull, opened on the 16th of October 1939 with the Hull Repertory Company production of 'Me and My Girl'. Peppino Santangelo came to the city in 1924 to join the Hull Repertory Company based at the Little Theatre in Kingston Square. After turning the struggling company around, Peppino, organised the reconstruction of the former Assembly Rooms which had first been built by R. H. Sharp over 100 years earlier in 1834 into the New Theatre. Not even the outbreak of the Second World War could halt Peppino’s dream and as the theatre’s first manager, he told crowds of 1939: ‘I have made plans for your future entertainment, always bearing in mind that we are at war and that laughter and not tears should be the dominant feature.’ Performances continued throughout the war when West End productions arrived to escape the bombing in London. The theatre bar was reinforced as a bomb shelter and the building received only one direct hit, in May 1941, which destroyed the front row of stalls and all the props and costumes of the visiting Sadler’s Wells Opera Company. In the late 1960s the Theatre's stage was deepened and the orchestra pit enlarged, whilst at the same time the auditorium was improved with new seating. The theatre closed in January 2016 to undergo a huge £15.9m revamp of the venue, which would see improvements to backstage areas including a new fly tower, used for scenery, lighting and stage effects, a larger stage, and more seating.

Inman won BBC TV personality of the year in 1976 and was voted funniest man on television by TV Times readers. The show attracted up to 22 million viewers and his shrill "I'm free!" hardly faded from the public's imagination.
