Preface

The Department of Library and Information Science is offering integrated M.Lib.I.Sc. (2 Years) Academic Programme. The department has also offers M.Phil and Ph.D (Part-Time/Full-Time) research programmes from the academic year 2008-2009.The department is offering the Programmes with updated curriculum of meeting present needs of academic, corporate and information industry to ensure employability. The department has updated and sophisticated information systems including digital library and web technologies. Students are exposed to practical environments of different types of libraries through education tours, internship and training programmes. The Department has highly qualified and experienced teaching faculty with UGC-NET and Ph.D., having an experience of more than a decade. They also served in various educational institions including institutions of national importance and information industries. The faculty received the research projects, organized sponsored academic events and awards. The Department has a good collection of library resources including e-journals, e-books and databases. The students are given practical training in designing digital libraries, subject information gateways, and compilation of research profile using mapping tools. Creation of websites and automation of libraries using open source tools. The faculty were visited and delivered lectures across national and international destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia, Oman, Thailand, Srilanka and South Korea. The faculty members are taking part in Board of Studies, Academic council, Governing Council, Inspection Committees, Research Advisory Boards of Colleges, Universities and National Institutes including NAAC and UGC.There are a few international students from Sri lanka, Ghana, Nepal, Dubai (UAE) and Oman pursued their higher education. The students make presentations in the Conferences, Seminars and other academic programmes at national and international level and received best paper awards. The google scholar citation of department is 632 with the H-Index of 13.

Program objectives

The objectives of M.Lib.I.Sc (Library and Information Science) programme are:

Educate and capacitate every Master of Library and Information Science product to make aware and demonstrate the ethics, values, and foundational principles of the information profession, and discuss the importance of information/data literacy and intellectual freedom within the LIS profession and an overall research attitude by helping them

 To obtain a thorough knowledge about the organizational settings both in hybrid and digital library systems affiliated to Academic, Public, Special organizations in which information professionals practice;  recognize the diversity (such as cultural and economic) in the information needs of the clientele and employees of an organization and become familiar with matching information/data services;  to apply the principles to information system and services; design, query, and evaluate information as well as databases and retrieval systems;  to use the basic concepts and principles related to the selection, evaluation, organization, archiving and preservation of traditional documents and digital information materials;  demonstrate the understanding of basic principles and standards of planning, organizing, management, marketing, and advocacy involved in organization and management of data/information such as classification and controlled vocabulary systems, cataloging systems, metadata schemas as well as other systems for promoting recall and precision towards promoting 20

user satisfaction; demonstrate proficiency in identifying, using, and evaluating current and emerging information and communication technologies applicable to LI services;  use service concepts, principles, and techniques to precisely enunciate and connect individuals or groups with accurate, relevant, and appropriate data/information;  describe the fundamental concepts of information-seeking behaviors; design instructional programs based on learning principles and theories;  demonstrate understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the ability to design a research project, and the ability to evaluate and synthesize research literature besides knowledge about plagiarism checker software;  demonstrate oral and written communication skills necessary for professional work including collaboration and presentations; evaluate programs and services using measurable criteria;  Identify ways in which information professionals can contribute to the cultural, economic, educational, and social well-being of our global communities;

Eligibility: A pass in any degree from a recognized Institution or University.

Selection Procedure

Selection will be made on the basis of merit list prepared from the application and the entrance examination. Reservation if any applicable as per the State/ Central Government / University Grant Commission and University Rules.
