Academic accomplishments and Professional ambitions of Prof. Dr.A.Rajendran I have been worked in “The Flora India Project” as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF, from 13.08.1986 to 12.08.1988) and Senior Research Fellow (SRF, from 13.08.1988 to 12.08.1991) in Botanical Survey of India (BSI) under the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India and revised the family Verbenaceae in India. I did my Ph.D. on “A Systematic Revision of Indian Verbenaceae”. Under the Guidance of Dr. P.Daniel, the then Joint Director, Botanical Survey of India, Southern Circle, Coimbatore. During my research period, I have collected plant specimens from different biogeography regions of India (including the Southern Western Ghats and Southern Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu) and also referred major herbaria in India. a) Taxonomic revision The Indian Verbenaceae – A Taxonomic Revision. The taxonomic revision of the Indian Verbenaceae is the result of the five years of intensive field and herbarium studies and has resulted in the recognition of  9 – genera  105 – Species  11 – Varieties and 77 of them are illustrated.

35 I have put my best efforts to make the Indian Verbenaceae as upto-date as possible both nomenclaturally and taxonomically. Ample notes have been added on different aspects wherever desirable. Rare and otherwise interesting species have been illustrated. Information on chromosome number and pollen grains wherever available is also provided. b) Monographic work Under my Supervision, one of my Ph.D. Scholar K.M. Prabhu Kumar did his research work on “Studies on Systematic, Conservation, Improvement and Development of Agro-techniques on three potential Ornamental Gingers (Zingiberaceae) in India”. In this work, 3 potential species of Zingiberaceae species with, high ornamental value viz., Boesenbergia siphonanthia (Baker) M. Sabu et al., Curcuma inodora Blatter and Larsenianthus careyanus (Benth.) W.J. Kvess & Mood. had been selected conserved and various studies were carried out to popularize the nature gingers. c) New species/genus discovered 1. New species – 14 2. New name (Namon Nova) – Clerodendrum cecil-fischeri 3. Nomenclatural – Nomenclatural Changes and Rectifications in the Indian Verbenaceae. 4. Extended Distribution of an Endemic Species – 4 5. Addition to the Flora of Sri Lanka – 1 6. Addition to the Flora of India – 24 7. Addition to the State Floras – 6 8. Rediscovery – 3 9. Lectotypification - 23 10. Misapplied Names – 7 11. Reinstated species – 5 12. Restatus & Combination – Pramna serratifolia 13. Documentation and ethnobotanical Studies – 117
