Jimmie Killingsworth By reading mournful poems rhetorically, I expand the concept of the elegy in order to reveal continuities between private and communal modes of mourning. My emphasis on readers of elegies challenges writer-centered definitions of the elegy, like that given by Peter Sacks, who describes how the elegy's formal conventions express the elegist's own motives for writing. Although Sacks's Freudian approach helpfully delineates some of the consoling effects that writing poetry has on the elegist herself, this dissertation revises such writer-centered concepts of the elegy by asking how elegies rhetorically invoke ethical relationships between writers and readers. By reading elegiac poems through Kenneth Burke's rhetorical theories and Emmanuel Levinas's ethics, I argue that these poems characterize, as Levinas suggests, subjectivity as fundamentally structured by ethical relationships with others. In keeping with this ethical focus, I analyze anthology poems, meaning short lyric poems written by acclaimed authors, easily accessible, and easily remembered— including several well-known poems by such authors as Emily Dickinson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Robert Frost. Anthology pieces invite ethical evaluation in part because they represent what counts as valuable poetry—and also, by implication, what iv does not. Because anthology poems are read by broad, diverse audiences, I suggest that a rhetorical methodology focusing on writer-reader relationships is essential to evaluating these poems' ethical implications. This rhetorical approach to poetry, however, questions rhetoricians and aesthetic theorists from Aristotle and Longinus to Lloyd F. Bitzer and Derek Attridge who emphasize distinctions between rhetoric and poetics. I address the ongoing debate about the relationship between rhetoric and poetics by arguing, along the lines of Wayne C. Booth's affirmation that fiction and rhetoric are interconnected, that poetry and rhetoric are likewise integrally tied. To this debate, I add an emphasis on philosophy—from which Plato, Ramus, and others exclude rhetoric and poetry—as likewise essential to understanding both poetry and rhetoric. The Victorian practice of photographing ghosts, or spirit photography, showed how Victorians viewed the past, present, and future. By examining the cultural artifact of Georgiana Houghton’s Chronicles of the Photographs of Spiritual Beings (1882), it becomes clear how photography affected Victorian literature as well as Victorian culture. In the short stories, “Oke of Okehurst” (1886) and “A Wicked Voice” (1887), Vernon Lee compared Victorian produced art to art from history. For Lee, the fast paced and highly commercialized art, which was influenced by photography, was not as powerful as art with historical context. An earlier work, Thomas Hardy’s A Laodicean: A Story of To-Day (1881), also showed the connections between photography, history, and uncertainty. The characters try to use photography to try and preserve a crumbling medieval castle, but their attempts end in failure. While technology like telegraphs gives Paula a sense of power, the novel leaves her wishing she had a more stable connection to the past and the future. These examples of Victorian literature show that photography affected Victorian culture at a deeper level than previously thought.

    3 ᪏᪎ The Birth of Tragedy Lyric Poetry and the Music of Words he stylistic role of music in The Birth of Tragedy1 presupposes the Trelation Nietzsche had uncovered between “music and words” in his theory of meter and rhythm in ancient Greek.2 This is Nietzsche’s architectonically 3 quantitative, measured and timed, theory of words and music for his courses on rhythm and meter as well as his discussion of tragedy and music in his first book.4 A recollection of the meaning of the spirit of music also reviews the logical questions of metaphor and truth and invites a parallel with The Gay Science with regard to language and the alchemical art of love, likewise in terms of both music and science. This inquiry entails the purely philosophical questions of knowl- edge and truth yet the discussion to follow takes its point of departure from classical philology, reviewing what Nietzsche himself held to have been his most scientific “discovery” on the terms of his own discipline: a discovery never disputed by Nietzsche’s arch-critic, Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Möllendorff. Indeed, and although we have become ac- customed to view Nietzsche as the perfect embodiment of the academic outsider, his discovery is now taken as the standard in his field (so standard as to be received without fanfare or routine acknowledgment as such).5 What was that discovery? 37 38 Words in Blood, Like Flowers Music and Words: The Influence of Modern Culture I. Unlike the First World War (1914-18) memories of which were recorded mellifluously by numerous efficient poets from both the sides of the Triple Entente and Central Powers, the period of the Second World War witnessed so limited a publication of war-writing in its early stages that the Anglo-Irish litterateur Cecil Day-Lewis (1904-72), then working as a publications-editor at the English Ministry of Information, was galvanised into publishing “Where are the War Poets?” in Penguin New Writing of February 1941, exasperatedly writing: ‘They who in folly or mere greed / Enslaved religion, markets, laws, / Borrow our language now and bid / Us to speak up in freedom’s cause. / It is the logic of our times, / No subject for immortal verse—/ That we who lived by honest dreams / Defend the bad against the worse’. In due course the nightmares that might have destroyed him were objectified into poetry. —Dominic Hibberd, Wilfred Owen: A New Biography WILFRED OWEN WAS AN ENGLISH POET who wrote his best work during the autumn of 1917 while recovering from shell shock in Craiglockhart War Hospital for Neurasthenic Officers. Although a few of his poems were published during his short lifetime, Owen died on November 8, 1918 in the Sambre-Oise Canal, before he could publish his book of war poetry. Owen’s body of work was collected by his mother and seven of those poems were edited by Edith Sitwell and published in a special edition of the avant-garde art magazine Wheels: 1919, which was dedicated to the memory of “Wilfred Owen, M.C.” (Stallworthy 81; v.). Following the Wheels edition, Owen’s war poetry spread slowly throughout the Western world. His work appeared in two separate collections in 1920 and 1931, saw widespread circulation during World War II, formed the basis for Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem in 1962, circulated in two more collections in 1963 and 1983, and rose to become a staple of twentieth century poetry anthologies (Stallworthy 81). Although there are other “trench poets” who achieved notoriety after the war’s end, the gradual canonization of Owen’s corpus has entrenched his life and works as a literary monument to our prevailing myths, feelings, and narratives of the First World War.1 Owen’s monumental status in English literature is appropriate because, during his time as a war poet, he carried a monumental mission.

November 2013 Roy Sommer 1 Definition Narration as a communicative act in which a chain of happenings is meaningfully structured and transmitted in a particular medium and from a particular point of view underlies not only narrative fiction proper but also poems and plays in that they, too, represent temporally organized sequences and thus relate “stories,” albeit with certain genre-specific differences, necessarily mediating them in the manner of presentation. Lyric poetry in the strict sense (and not only obviously narrative poetry like ballads or verse romances) typically features strings of primarily mental or psychological happenings perceived through the consciousness of single speakers and articulated from their position. Drama enacts strings of happenings with actors in live performance, the presentation of which, though typically devoid of any overt presenting agency, is mediated e.g. through selection, segmentation and arrangement. Thanks to these features characteristic of narrative, lyric poems as well as plays performed on the stage can be profitably analyzed with the transgeneric application of narratological categories, though with poetry the applicability of the notion of story and with drama that of mediation seems to be in question. 2 Explication Transgeneric narratology proceeds from the assumption that narratology’s highly differentiated system of categories can be applied to the analysis of both poems and plays, possibly opening the way to a more precise definition of their respective generic specificity, even though (lyric) poems do not seem to tell stories and stories in dramas do not seem to be mediated (but presented directly).

    Allusions to Archaic Elegy in the Epigrams of Leonidas of Tarentum Alissa A. Vaillancourt (The Graduate Center of The City University of New York) Within the epigrams of the Greek Anthology, some scholars have identified a few elegiac elements. For example, in his article on the influence of archaic elegy on sympotic epigrams, Bowie proposes that Asclepiades, Callimachus, Hedylus and Posidippus “see themselves as in some respects reworking the early elegiac tradition.”1 I would like to add Leonidas of Tarentum to this list. In their commentary on Leonidas of Tarentum, Gow and Page identify two epigrams by Leonidas as elegies: 11 GP =AP 7.440 and 71 GP =AP 7.466.2 Using these elegies as my starting point, I will investigate how the poetry of Leonidas of Tarentum engages archaic elegy. I will begin by investigating the influence of archaic elegy on Leonidas with particular focus on the works of Mimnermus and Tyrtaeus. Through this investigation, I will show not only that the qualities of lamentation in archaic elegy influence Leonidas of Tarentum, but also that the didacticism that is common in archaic elegy is being refashioned by Leonidas to suit his own collection of epigrams. Leonidas applies elegiac didacticism in some of his poems in order to emphasize his own philosophy, which stresses the moribund nature of life. He refashions the elegy of Tyrtaeus by defining a sort of virtue in his epigrams, but instead of relating this virtue to valor earned through polemic pursuits for Sparta, Leonidas presents the virtue of the traveler, who is alone, jaded, and ready to embrace death.

Deskis, Director The Old English elegies include a group of poems found in the Exeter Book manuscript that have traditionally been treated as a single genre due to their general sense of lament – The Wanderer, The Seafarer, The Riming Poem, Deor, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Wife’s Lament, Resignation, Riddle 60, The Husband’s Message, and The Ruin. In this study, I conduct a linguistic stylistic analysis of all ten poems using systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and a variety of computational and linguistic tools: Lexomics, Voyant, and Microsoft Excel. My results focus on three characteristics of the poetry: (1) the similarity of the linguistic style within the poems, measured by Lexomics; (2) an oscillation between first- and third-person clausal Themes, measured using SFL analysis; and (3) themes in the lexical categorization, measured through detailed lexical analysis. In the end, my methodology creates a new and more nuanced definition of the elegy: a relatively short reflective or dramatic poem, similar in style and content to other elegiac poems, that alternates between first- and third-person perspectives and includes (1) themes of exile; (2) imagery of water or the sea, the earth, and/or the weather; and (3) words expressing both joy and sorrow. Ultimately, I argue for a recategorization of only five poems as “Old English elegies”: The Wanderer, The Seafarer, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Wife’s Lament, and The Riming Poem.
