February 2021 Newsletter President’s Message: Well, we made it through February and 2021 is trucking right along. So, what happened in February? I am so glad you asked! We hosted our International ASHRAE President for the second year in a row with collaboration with UNC Charlotte’s William States Lee College of Engineering and Facilities Management department. The turn out was great and I thank all of you that were able to attend and represent our members of SPASHRAE at the event. The event was kicked off with Representative at large- Dimple Ajmera reading a proclamation from the Mayor’s office declaring National Engineers Week. That was promptly followed by Dean Keynton introducing President Gulledge to present his presidential message. That conversation was well received and there was about 25 minutes left for the guests to ask Chuck some questions. I want to send a special thanks to those from our chapter that helped make this event possible and below you can see our Certificates of Appreciation that we made and presented to those who helped be a part of the presentation. In keeping with National Engineers Week, I was invited by our Student Activities Chair Tyler Tufts, to visit 62 fifth graders in Rowan County at Millbridge Elementary. We were able to introduce ASHRAE to their Science classes and we did a great STEM activity and answered many questions from the students. I am looking for more to do and hope to hear from our members if there is an event you would like to see us at. Our goal for the coming months is to do some Research Promotion fundraisers so please be on the lookout for information to come on that subject. Thank you all for your continued support and membership with SPASHRAE! Sincerely, Don Gariepy MEMBERSHIP CHAIR Ryan Staton Johnson Controls [email protected] Why become a member? ASHRAE membership provides direct access into the Society's HVAC&R technical library of knowledge that is continually updated and expanded. Rooted in the Handbook, this knowledge base extends into cutting edge research papers and technical discussions published in the ASHRAE Journal and other Society periodicals. How do you keep up to date with changes in the industry? Where did you read about the details of a new integrated refrigeration control system strategy? Where did you see an advertisement for a new type of air quality sensor that's exactly what you need for a job you're bidding out next week? You probably read it in an ASHRAE publication...just part of your ASHRAE Membership experience. To join ASHRAE online click HERE. Include the following with/on your application: 1. Please state your intention to participate in the Southern Piedmont Chapter. 2. National membership dues are $220...please include an additional $30 for Chapter dues...Total=$250.00 We look forward to meeting you and helping you grow in your career!!! PROGRAMS Benjamin Coy RMF Engineering [email protected] March Virtual Meeting TOPIC: Domestic Hot Water Recirculation for High Rise Buildings Presented By: Chris Edmondson (Registration Link will be sent in Confirmation Email) Presentation Summary: With our new Legionella design guidelines demanding no stagnant water, balanced return line flows and more use of different pressure zones, our old ways of designing Domestic Hot Water Recirculation systems may not work. We will take a quick look at High Rise Building Pressure Zones and their system design impact. Our Objectives are to: Learn a new way of sizing recirculation pumps Watch for pit falls being created by modern design Speaker's Bio: Chris Edmondson received his B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1967. During his summers, he worked at Barber Coleman and Jay Johnson Controls. After graduation, he spent four and a half years as a salesman with the Trane Company. In 1971, he came to work for the James M. Pleasants Co., Inc. BOARD OF GOVERNORS GGA Chair Billy Austin Shultz Engineering Group 704-334-7363 [email protected] Dear ASHRAE Southern Piedmont, In case you missed it last month, the City of Charlotte, at the behest of our chapter, made the attached proclamation of National Engineers Week. The following was also announced on the ASHRAE.org web site: Proclamations Issued for Engineers Week and Engineers Month Two American cities, one state, and one Canadian city have recently issued proclamations in honor of Engineers Week (February 21-27) and Engineers Month (March). Governor of Iowa, Kim Reynolds, issued a proclamation for Engineers Week, along with Mayor Vi Alexander Lyles of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mayor Harold Weinbrecht of Cary, North Carolina. Mayor Lisa Helps of the City of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, issued a proclamation for March 2021 as National Engineering Month. For copies of these proclamations, and to find out more about requesting a proclamation to be signed by elected officials, visit the "Proclamations and Resolutions" section on the ASHRAE website. The following thank you note was sent to Charlotte Councilmember Dimple Ajmera, who made this proclamation. Any time you talk to a government official at any level, please share the following information with them: Dear Councilmember Ajmera, Thank you so much for presenting the National Engineers Week proclamation today (attached is the official proclamation we received by mail)!!! We were so very honored to have you attend our meeting to hear our international society President, Mr. Chuck Gulledge, present his presidential address. Going forward, please keep in mind that we serve as a technical resource (we do not lobby) for policy makers such as yourself in matters related to energy efficiency, sustainability, and resiliency of all building types. We are also the best technical resource for information on how to minimize indoor transmission of airborne. Our ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force Building Readiness Guide can be accessed via the following link: https://www.ashrae.org/about/news/2020/ashrae-epidemic-task-force-releases- updated-building-readiness-guide. If you have any questions or need technical backup, please contact us and we will be glad to be of assistance to you. Thank you for all you do for our city! Way to go Southern Piedmont!!! Student Activities CHAIR Tyler Tufts United Mechanical Corporation [email protected] Student Activities Chairs are the foundation of ASHRAE student membership recruitment and retention. Student Activities has this month’s spotlight on visiting 5th Graders! Our chapter brought SPASHRAE to 63 5th graders to be exact. Using an ASHRAE SA developed kit on Pipe Losses we were able to perform an exciting, hands on, experiment and demonstration to make engineering more real to the fifth graders at Millbridge Elementary. Special thanks to Mrs. Stancil for inviting us to present, and many thanks to the future engineers we met in her class. The visit had to be virtual and along with our Chapter President Don Gariepy we made a “Mr. Wizard” type of demonstration for the students to follow along with. We recorded the ZOOM session and they sent the file to Mrs. Stancil. Our chapter supplied all the materials needed for the experiment which was much appreciated. Mrs. Stancil and the 5th Graders!!!
