February 2021 SOPI Newsletter.Pdf February 2021 Newsletter President’s Message: Well, we made it through February and 2021 is trucking right along. So, what happened in February? I am so glad you asked! We hosted our International ASHRAE President for the second year in a row with collaboration with UNC Charlotte’s William States Lee College of Engineering and Facilities Management department. The turn out was great and I thank all of you that were able to attend and represent our members of SPASHRAE at the event. The event was kicked off with Representative at large- Dimple Ajmera reading a proclamation from the Mayor’s office declaring National Engineers Week. That was promptly followed by Dean Keynton introducing President Gulledge to present his presidential message. That conversation was well received and there was about 25 minutes left for the guests to ask Chuck some questions. I want to send a special thanks to those from our chapter that helped make this event possible and below you can see our Certificates of Appreciation that we made and presented to those who helped be a part of the presentation. In keeping with National Engineers Week, I was invited by our Student Activities Chair Tyler Tufts, to visit 62 fifth graders in Rowan County at Millbridge Elementary. We were able to introduce ASHRAE to their Science classes and we did a great STEM activity and answered many questions from the students. I am looking for more to do and hope to hear from our members if there is an event you would like to see us at. Our goal for the coming months is to do some Research Promotion fundraisers so please be on the lookout for information to come on that subject. Thank you all for your continued support and membership with SPASHRAE! Sincerely, Don Gariepy MEMBERSHIP CHAIR Ryan Staton Johnson Controls [email protected] Why become a member? Student Activities has this month’s spotlight on visiting 5th Graders! Our chapter brought SPASHRAE to 63 5th graders to be exact. Using an ASHRAE SA developed kit on Pipe Losses we were able to perform an exciting, hands on, experiment and demonstration to make engineering more real to the fifth graders at Millbridge Elementary. Special thanks to Mrs. Stancil for inviting us to present, and many thanks to the future engineers we met in her class. The visit had to be virtual and along with our Chapter President Don Gariepy we made a “Mr. Wizard” type of demonstration for the students to follow along with. We recorded the ZOOM session and they sent the file to Mrs. Stancil. Our chapter supplied all the materials needed for the experiment which was much appreciated. Mrs. Stancil and the 5th Graders!!! President-elect Biden’s American Rescue Plan contains such assistance as part of an aggressive strategy to contain the virus, increase access to life-saving vaccines, and create a foundation for sustainable and inclusive recovery. American cities and our essential workers have been serving at the frontlines of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic for nearly a year. We have been charged with executing herculean public health efforts and an unprecedented emergency response. Despite immense fiscal pressure, your local government partners oversaw those efforts, while trying to maintain essential services and increase our internal capacity to provide support for residents and businesses who have been crippled by a tanking economy. And yet, as the economic engines of our country, local governments will be relied upon to lead the long- term economic recovery our nation so desperately needs, even as, with few exceptions, cities have been largely left without direct federal assistance.

  • Mayors Letter to President Trump on Fiscal Assistance
August 5, 2020 The Honorable Donald J. Trump President of the United States The White House Dear President Trump: The United States Conference of Mayors – and the more than 1,400 cities it represents – is grateful for the actions the Administration and Congress have taken over the last several months to respond to COVID-19. We are also pleased that you recognize more must be done to address the ongoing public health pandemic and spur an economic recovery. This public health crisis continues to have devastating effects on communities across the country. As discussions advance on the next pandemic response package, and as cases continue to surge across the nation, we urge you to make support for American cities a top priority. Today we are writing to request $250 billion in direct, flexible emergency assistance to cities of all sizes in the COVID response and recovery bill currently under negotiation, and to convey the great urgency of need in American cities. From the start, cities have been on the front lines of the fight against this disease, coordinating local responses and devoting significant resources to help keep people safe. At the same time, as economies shut down, cities have experienced a precipitous decline in tax revenue – the full impact of which economists expect to grow. Together, these dynamics have decimated city budgets in cities large and small. These budget gaps are a direct result of this pandemic, and they are forcing painful decisions, including layoffs, furloughs, and cuts to essential government services when our residents need them the most. The situation is threatening public safety and costing people jobs.
