B vi The State of Adult and Continuing Education in Africa FOREWORD It is a privilege for me to write the Foreword of this book: few comprehensive studies of adult education have come from the African continent and so this is an exciting developmentfor a number of reasons: It is really important indication of the way that the study of the education of adults is developing in the South. It is vital for the development of societies that adults should continue to be educated and the fact that the study of the process is now developing is excellent. Secondly, for too long the continent has been exposed to Western thought and ideas without having its own established baseline by which to evaluate these. Indeed,

    WS1 Remarks on the nasal classes in Mungbam and Naki Mungbam and Naki are two non-Grassfields Bantoid languages spoken along the northwest frontier of the Grassfields area to the north of the Ring languages. Until recently, they were poorly described, but new data reveals them to show significant nasal noun class patterns, some of which do not appear to have been previously noted for Bantoid. The key patterns are: 1. Like many other languages of their region (see Good et al. 2011), they make productive use of a mysterious diminutive plural prefix with a form like mu-, with associated concords in m, here referred to as Class 18a (see Hyman 1980:187). 2. The five dialects of Mungbam show a level of variation in their nasal classes that one might normally expect of distinct languages. a. Two dialects show no evidence for nasals in Class 6. Two other dialects, Munken and Ngun, show a Class 6 prefix on nouns of form a- but nasal concords. In Munken Class 6, this nasal is n, clearly distinct from an m associated with 6a; in Ngun, both 6 and 6a are associated with m concords. The Abar dialect shows a different pattern, with Class 6 nasal concords in m and nasal prefixes on some Class 6 nouns. b. The Abar, Biya, and Ngun dialects show a Class 18a prefix with form mN-, rather than the more regionally common mu-. This reduction is presumably connected to perseveratory nasalization attested throughout the languages of the region with a diachronic pathway along the lines of mu- > mũ- > mN- perhaps providing a partial example for the development of Bantu Class 9/10.

    US-China Education Review A 7 (2011) 952-959 D Earlier title: US-China Education Review, ISSN 1548-6613 DAVID PUBLISHING Teaching With and Learning Through ICTs in Zimbabwe’s Teacher Education Colleges Charles Musarurwa University of Botswana, Gaborone, Botswana The use of ICTs (information and communication technologies) in Zimbabwe’s teacher education colleges is of paramount importance. The teacher trainees have a dual role to play: learning through ICTs and also learning how to teach through them. Interestingly, the rate at which schools have embraced the use of ICTs is unprecedented, but this has not been matched with an equal effort by teacher education colleges and hence teacher trainees have been less exposed and trained in using such technologies. Evidently, this has created a mismatch between the need for teachers who are conversant with ICTs and e-learning and their availability. This paper stems from a pilot programme in which the author was an active participant. It reflects on efforts made to integrate ICTs into the teacher education curriculum and evaluates the impact that this programme will have on teacher education in Zimbabwe. In the last three decades, Early Childhood Education has undergone tremendous changes in terms of growth and development. More schools for Early Childhood Education have been constructed in villages, rural and urban areas. Such construction has been in response to the demand of the people for such provision. The sample consisted of 15 African Union countries linguistically using Arabic, English and French. The data collected was based on a questionnaire administered to senior officials in the Department/Ministry of Education in each one of the participating countries. In addition, documents were solicited from the Departments for statistical purposes. Integrated curriculum was first implemented in 2013, the inception was introduced in foundation phase (grade one to three) and progressively moved to grade four and five in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The progression will happen until integrated curriculum reaches Matric as the new curriculum is being implemented in phases starting from primary school. Given this the research sites were primary schools in Maseru, the capital of Lesotho. This chapter outlines and gives the research context and what motivated the study. 1.2 BACKGROUND The value of Education in Lesotho can be traced back to the period before the country was colonized by Britain. The education of boys and girls was done separately instilling traditional values in them. The rationale of this indigenous education was to produce initiates who would pride themselves with their traditional values. The formal training lasted less than a year where boys were trained to fight with sticks and to protect their country from attacks, for girls the focus was more around respect and taking care of the family (Motaba, 1998). The change in education system then came during colonial rule which can be dated as far back as 1830s with the arrival of missionaries of different denominations.

Email: [email protected] Abstract In practice, Lesotho’s Higher Education funding model is similar to most of her SADC counterparts, especially the few that have been elucidated upon in this document – namely Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland. The national governments are the major sponsors for their respective education systems and for higher education in particular. The sponsorship is generally in the form of direct government subvention to institutions and student support grants and/or loans, usually administered by some government body, such as the National Manpower Development Secretariat (NMDS) in the case of Lesotho. The government subvention is negotiated according to the institutional budgetary needs vis-viz the national government’s budgetary priorities and constraints for the given year. Comparatively, Lesotho has been observed to offer the lowest per capita support to its learners and, particularly to her Higher Education (HE) learners. Introduction The fact that HE plays a central role in driving socio-economic development and competitiveness of a country can never be over emphasized. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) categorized the contributions of HE to socio-economic development into four major domains, namely: the formation of human capital (primarily through teaching and learning), the building of knowledge bases (primarily through research and knowledge development), the dissemination and use of knowledge (primarily through interactions with knowledge users) and the maintenance of knowledge (through inter- generational storage and transmission of knowledge).

The study is designed by a comparative research. AT THE THIRD CONVOCATION CEREMONY OF COVENANT UNIVERSITY, OTA, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA # 1 6 African Universities in the 21st Century: Attaining Global Relevance By Professor Michael Omolewa INTRODUCTION I give God the Glory for His Grace to make this presentation on a most topical subject. For the Lecture, I would seek to identify the state of African universities today as my starting point. I would then attempt to invite you to join me in retracing our steps as we examine the development of the universities in Africa, starting with Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone, and highlighting the key moments in university education in Africa. I would hopefully attempt to draw attention to the unique place occupied by the first generation universities such as the University of Ibadan, Makerere University, as well as the University of Legon which have produced award- winners and eminent African leaders, professionals, international civil servants and several other African intellectual and educative elite. # 2 3rd Convocation Ceremony, Special Lectures and Speehes I shall then observe how the flame begins to flicker and how new dreams are dreamt leading to the conception and birth of private universities such as Covenant University, Redeemer's University, Babcock University and others in the category. I shall conclude with a discussion of the challenges of building the universities for today and tomorrow, and suggest some broad initiatives for the universities of Africa for the 21st century global village.
