However, little is known about the signalling pathway of ROS in plants with CAM metabolism, other than the knowledge that ROS production is limited in CAM plants. In the present study, we assessed the effects of drought stress on reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme activities in leaf portions of Guzmania monostachia. The exposure of G. monostachia plants to 10 days of water deficit led to a decrease in the leaf relative water content (RWC) from 75% to 50% in all leaf portions (apical, middle and basal); hence, it was concluded that plants subjected to drought produced higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) when compared with control plants. Significant variations to the formation of ROS were also identified in all leaf portions during the diurnal cycle. After ten days of CAM induction, H2O2 concentration increased significantly in contrast to control plants during the day-night cycle. In addition, the activity of antioxidant enzymes in processes related to the elimination of ROS was also evaluated. -

The present study consists of the floristics-taxonomic survey of Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae on rocky outcrops located at an Atlantic Forest-Caatinga transition area in Paraíba State, northeast of Brazil, in order to provide data for the implementation of the biota conservation’s policies, especially of the flora associated to rocky environments of Paraíba State, given that the taxonomic studies focusing on such families in this state are still incipient. During the study, ten species in six genera of Bromeliaceae and six species in five genera of Orchidaceae were recorded. The treatment includes keys for recognition of the species of families, morphological descriptions, illustrations, geographic distribution data, and comments on the phenology of the species. Bot., V.33, n.4, p.661-676, out.-dec. 2010 Floristic diversity of two crystalline rocky outcrops in the Brazilian northeast semi-arid region1 POLYHANNA GOMES2,3 and MARCCUS ALVES2 (received: March 19, 2010; accepted: October 21, 2010) ABSTRACT – (Floristic diversity of two crystalline rocky outcrops in the Brazilian northeast semi-arid region). Floristic composition and structure of vegetation were studied in two rocky outcrop areas in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. From April 2007 to September 2008, 18 monthly field trips were carried out. Vascular plants were randomly collected throughout the outcrop areas. For structural analysis, 30 plots of 1 × 1 m were set in the vegetation islands. The checklist presented combines 211 species (69 families and 168 genera), although only 56 species were collected in the plots. Fabaceae (18 spp.; 8.5%), Asteraceae (17 spp.; 8%), Orchidaceae (13 spp.; 6.1%), Euphorbiaceae (13 spp.; 6.1%), Bromeliaceae (10 spp.; 4.7%), and Poaceae (eight spp.; 3.8%) are the richest families. Overall, 1,792 shrub and herbaceous specimens were counted in the plots. The Shannon-Wiener (H) diversity index values were 2.572 and 2.547 nats individual-1. The species that presented the highest absolute abundance values (number of plants) had low frequencies in the plots and vice-versa. The biological spectrum had a high proportion of phanerophytes and therophytes, followed by cryptophytes, chamaephytes, and hemicryptophytes. The studied flora shares floristic components similar to other rocky outcrop areas of the semi-arid region in northeastern Brazil, including in relation to dominant groups in the vegetation structure. -

Está composta por cerca de 3.200 espécies em 58 gêneros, com distribuição predominantemente neotropical, à exceção de Pittcairnia feliciana, encontrada na costa Oeste do continente africano (LUTHER, 2008; SMITH; DOWNS, 1974). O leste do Brasil constitui um dos principais centros de diversidade da família (WANDERLEY et al., 2007), estando representada no território brasileiro por 1.348 espécies em 44 gêneros, das quais cerca de 90% são endêmicas do país (BFG 2015). As espécies de Bromeliaceae apresentam elevada diversidade ecológica (MANETTI et al., 2009) e exibem uma combinação de qualidades que favorecem sua sobrevivência em condições fisicamente muito exigentes (BENZING 2000). A presença de tricomas absorventes, suculência, represamento foliar e metabolismo CAM são algumas das estratégias que permitem seu sucesso em, por exemplo, ambientes submetidos ao stress hídrico (HORRES et al., 2007), como ocorre na extensão Semiárida do Brasil. O semiárido brasileiro, área caracterizada por apresentar precipitação média anual inferior a 800 mm, índice de aridez de até 0,5 e risco de seca maior que 60% (BRASIL, 2007), abrange oito estados da região Nordeste e a parte setentrional de Minas Gerais, Brasil, incluindo mais de 20% dos municípios de todo o território nacional, predominantemente recobertos pelos domínios de Caatinga e Cerrado (ASA, 2016). -

A floristic and ecological study of vascular plants has been undertaken on an inselberg in the municipality of Feira de Santana, Bahia State, Brazil. The floristic survey has identified 48 species in 32 families. The largest families are: Orchidaceae (5 species - 10.4%), Bromeliaceae (4-8.3%), and Euphorbiaceae (4-8.3%). Bromeliaceae, Cyperaceae, and Melastomataceae have the largest dominance indexes, and each "island" ofvegetation has between 8 and II species. In these "islands", 60% of the species are phanerophytes, 25% hemicryptophytes, 10% terophytes, and 5% chamaephytes; while in the whole on the inselberg, 69% ofthe species are phanerophytes, 13% are chamaephytes, and 8% are hemicryptophytes. Abstract: Many Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest plant and animal species are geographically restricted to Southern Bahia and Northern Espírito Santo States. We investigated the geographic distribution of epiphytic bromeliads in the lowland forest of the Una region (15° 17’ 34’ S - 39° 04’ 30’’ W) in Southern Bahia. Specifically, we addressed the following questions: i) what is the extent of each species distribution?; and ii) are the Bromeliaceae subfamilies distributed differently from one another? Almost half of the 40 species (47.5%) occur exclusively in the Southern Bahia-Northern Espírito Santo region and are herein referred as endemic species. The highest percentage of the 15 species of Tillandsioideae (46.7%) occur throughout the South American Continent and most of the 25 species of Bromelioideae (68.0%) are mainly represented by endemic species.
