Tarih: (J.9(. 2.o~D , Ad1-Soyad~ ve_imza v' ~ Alican BILGIN ÖNSÖZ Çalışmamız Stanley Lane Poole’un “Medieval India from contemporary sources” adlı eserinin yüksek lisans tezi olarak Türkçeye çevirisidir. Eser 1000 – 1764 yılları arası ortaçağ Hindistan’ında gerçekleşen ve Lane-Poole’un gözünde önemli bulunan vakaların kaynaklar üzerinden birebir olarak aktarıldığı derlemedir. Yazar Farsça ve Arapça yazılmış bu ana kaynakların büyük bölümünde eserlerin İngilizce çevirilerine başvurur. Hatalı gördüğü çevirilerde ana kaynakların ana dilinden (Arapça ve Farsça) düzeltmeler yaptığını belirtmektedir. İngilizce çeviriler için; Edward Denison Rose (Tarih-i Reşidi), Annette Susannah Beveridge (Gülbeden Begüm Anıları, Hümayunname ve Bâbürnâme), Alexander Rogers, Henry Beveridge (Ekbernâme ve Tüzük-i Cihângîrî) Irvine William, Jonathan Scott, H.S. Jarrett (Âyîn-i Ekberî) eserlerinden yararlanmıştır. Ayrıca Henry Miers Elliot “The History of India, as Told by Its Own Historians (Ed. John Dowson)” eserine de sıkça başvurduğundan bahseder. Çalışmanın içeriği dört bölüme ayrılmıştır. Birinci bölüm; Stanley Lane Poole’un hayatı ve eserleri hakkında kısa bilgi. İkinci bölüm; Eser içerisinde bahsi geçen kaynaklar ve yazarları hakkında bilgi. Üçüncü bölüm; eserin çevirisidir. Son olarak dördüncü bölümde ise, değerlendirme ve sonuç kısımları yer alır. Eser içerisinde çeviri hataları ve yanlışlarımız olmuş ise okuyucudan özür dileriz. Hindistan tarihi üzerine çalışmalar ülkemizde yeni ivme kazanmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı ise, İngilizlerin Hind deniz ticaretine sahip olmak için Hindistan’da varlık gösterdiği ilk yıllarda, seyyah, tüccar ve elçiler aracılığı ile Hindistan’da tutunma çabalarının neler olduğunun açıklanmasıdır. Bu çalışmada ayrıca İngilizlerin Babürlü Devleti’nden izin alarak Surat’ta açtıkları fabrikanın işleyişi hakkında bazı bilgiler sunmaktır. Böylelikle bu bilgiler ışığında Hindistan’ın kaderini etkileyen İngiliz Doğu Hindistan Şirketinin kuruluş aşamasında ona imkân oluşturan etkenlerin tespit edilmesi hedeflenmektedir. Çalışmada yararlanılan kaynaklar ise, döneme ilişkin siyasetname, seyahatname gibi ana kaynaklar ile çeşitli yerli ve yabancı yardımcı kaynaklardır. The Efforts of the British Settlement in India in Stage of the Establishment of the British East India Company Abstract The temporal limitation of this work coincides with Jahangir Shah, the ruler of the Baburid Empire in the early 17th century. The aim of the study is to explain what British efforts to hold in India through travelers, merchants and ambassadors in order to have Indian maritime trade in the first years of its existence in India.
