BY the SAME AUTHOR After Delores Girjs, Visions and Everything the Sophie Horowitz Story PEOPLE in TROUBLE
BY THE SAME AUTHOR After Delores GirJs, Visions and Everything The Sophie Horowitz Story PEOPLE IN TROUBLE SARAH SCHULMAN E. P. DUTTON NEW YORK ACKNOWLEDGMENTS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Different friends read this book in various versions. Each had a wholly unique and personal set of criteria that they brought to the project. I thank them for their time and attention, especially Maxine Wolfe, Bettina Berch, Abigail Child, Christie Cassidy, Meg Wolitzer, Julia Scher, David Leavitt, Shelley Wald, Michael Korie, Stewart Wallace, Beryl Satter, Robert Hilferty and Ana Maria Simo. People in Trouble was financed, in part, through generous grants and loans from Charlie Schulman, Susan Seizer, my parents, Jennifer Miller, Abigail Child, Rachel Pfeffer, Beryl Satter, Diane Cleaver with Sanford Greenburger Associates, the Mac- Dowell Colony, Cummington Community for the Arts, and the Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. I thank them for their support and patience. My editor, Carole DeSanti, engaged this book with a high level of concentration and creativity. I am grateful for her insightful and intelligent contributions throughout the many drafts. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Vll It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but their social being that determines their consciousness. KARL MARX AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA It was the beginning of the end of the world but not everyone noticed right away. Some people were dying. Some people were busy. Some people were cleaning their houses while the war movie played on television. The cigarette in the mouth of the woman behind the register was cemented with purple lipstick. She had lipstick smeared on her smock. Tiny caterpillars of gray ash decorated the sticky glass countertop. -
Leksykon Polskiej I Światowej Muzyki Elektronicznej
Piotr Mulawka Leksykon polskiej i światowej muzyki elektronicznej „Zrealizowano w ramach programu stypendialnego Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego-Kultura w sieci” Wydawca: Piotr Mulawka [email protected] © 2020 Wszelkie prawa zastrzeżone ISBN 978-83-943331-4-0 2 Przedmowa Muzyka elektroniczna narodziła się w latach 50-tych XX wieku, a do jej powstania przyczyniły się zdobycze techniki z końca XIX wieku m.in. telefon- pierwsze urządzenie służące do przesyłania dźwięków na odległość (Aleksander Graham Bell), fonograf- pierwsze urządzenie zapisujące dźwięk (Thomas Alv Edison 1877), gramofon (Emile Berliner 1887). Jak podają źródła, w 1948 roku francuski badacz, kompozytor, akustyk Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995) nagrał za pomocą mikrofonu dźwięki naturalne m.in. (śpiew ptaków, hałas uliczny, rozmowy) i próbował je przekształcać. Tak powstała muzyka nazwana konkretną (fr. musigue concrete). W tym samym roku wyemitował w radiu „Koncert szumów”. Jego najważniejszą kompozycją okazał się utwór pt. „Symphonie pour un homme seul” z 1950 roku. W kolejnych latach muzykę konkretną łączono z muzyką tradycyjną. Oto pionierzy tego eksperymentu: John Cage i Yannis Xenakis. Muzyka konkretna pojawiła się w kompozycji Rogera Watersa. Utwór ten trafił na ścieżkę dźwiękową do filmu „The Body” (1970). Grupa Beaver and Krause wprowadziła muzykę konkretną do utworu „Walking Green Algae Blues” z albumu „In A Wild Sanctuary” (1970), a zespół Pink Floyd w „Animals” (1977). Pierwsze próby tworzenia muzyki elektronicznej miały miejsce w Darmstadt (w Niemczech) na Międzynarodowych Kursach Nowej Muzyki w 1950 roku. W 1951 roku powstało pierwsze studio muzyki elektronicznej przy Rozgłośni Radia Zachodnioniemieckiego w Kolonii (NWDR- Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Tu tworzyli: H. Eimert (Glockenspiel 1953), K. Stockhausen (Elektronische Studie I, II-1951-1954), H. -

A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again: Essays And
Praise for David Foster Wallace’s a supposedly fun thing i’ll never do again “Further cements Wal ace’s reputation as probably the most ambitious and prodigious literary talent of his generation, an erupting Vesuvius of prose and ideas and intel ect.” —John Marshal , Seattle Post Intelligencer “The title essay is worth the price of the book… irrefutable proof of comic genius…. Yes, he’s a great writer, get used to it.” —Adam Begley, New York Observer “Wal ace puts enough energy, attitude, thought, ‘fun’ (in and out of quotes) and sheer information into any single page to wear me out. But they don’t…. As long as he’s wil ing to get down and rassle with this stuff, I’m glad to sit here and read al about it.” —David Gates, Newsweek “You don’t want to miss out on reading David Foster Wal ace. Yes, he’s that good.” —Kane Webb, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette “He has Gore Vidal’s biting wit, Christopher Hitchens’s ability to disrobe intel ectual impostors, and Pynchon’s sense of the bizarre…. Not just refreshing, it’s downright exhilarating.” —David Daley, Hartford Courant “Wal ace’s sheer verbal precocity and versatility stun.” —Joan Hinkemeyer, Rocky Mountain News “DFW is smart and funny, a man from whose word processor flows a torrent of bril iant observations and hysterical wit. Do your disposition and your mind a favor: Read this book.” —Steven E. Alford, Houston Chronicle “A marvelous book…. Sparkling reportage…. If one wants to see the zeitgeist auto-grappling, in al its necessary confusions, one must read every essay in this book.” —James Wood, Newsday “Funny as al get-out…. -

It’s called “Murder Will Out.” (He has worked his way over to the window seat) When the curtain goes up the first thing you see is a dead body.
