When you read inside, you'll see why. May their days overflow with blessings. This will be the first issue available only online. But for those that want hard copies, contact Parchment Printers: £1 a copy! We've done well to have issued fourteen in hard copy, when you think that Fire! (of the Harlem Renaissance), Legitime Defense and Pan African were one issue publications - and Revue du Monde Noir was issued six times. We're lucky to have what they didn't have – the online link. So I salute again the support we have from Sista Mariana at Rastaites and Marco Fregnan of Reggaediscography. Another salute also to Ali Zion, for taking The Dub to Aylesbury (five venues) - and here, there and everywhere she goes.

Very pleased to bring you an interview with one of my favourite modern producers, Jil Addis. This month’s issue also sees the review of #Ending The Silence by Euton Daley’s Unlock The Chains Collective. It had been some time since I saw a live show in a theatre and it was very energising to witness such a vital show. Another local event was the start of reggae nights in Eynsham thanks to Richie Roots, writer for The Dub. Hopefully that can now be a regular feature. Pete Clack brings us a profile on a true individual and his connection to New Orleans music – Little Richard. Richard was a trailblazer and a controversial figure for many reasons, as well as giving one Jimi Hendrix one of his first touring jobs in his band. I have loved having Pete’s reports from the blues end of town as reggae owed so much to the sounds of New Orleans, Chicago and elsewhere in the USA. Thanks again to Steve Mosco for his continued support, it means a great deal as for many years I used to buy records from his online Reggae Music Store.

King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 by John Jason Collins Wilson A dissertation Presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © John Jason Collins Wilson, May 2013 ABSTRACT King Alpha’s Song in a Strange Land: Jamaican Migrant and Canadian Host in Toronto’s Transnational Reggae Music Scene, 1973-1990 John Jason Collins Wilson Advisor: University of Guelph, 2013 Doctor Catharine Wilson Reggae music facilitated a cultural dialogue between Jamaican migrant and Canadian host in Toronto during the 1970s and 1980s. Exchanges flowed across the city’s ethnic frontier, bridging black and white youth together in an ‘oppositional’ and musical movement. While migrants enacted their Jamaican ethnicity in places where reggae was played, many non-Jamaicans satisfied a curiosity in the music of their migrant friends. This study examines the process of migration of people and music as seen from both the migrant and the host’s perspective. It is as much about black Jamaicans as it is about white Torontonians. Twenty Jamaicans and twenty non-Jamaicans were interviewed for this project. Though reggae became an expected part of Toronto’s musical vernacular, the Canadian version meant different things to different people. Indeed, sometimes the only thread that tied the varied experiences together was that Toronto was the place where reggae happened. Still, as a hybrid, reggae had rather evolved outside of place. It was a transnational musical form, constantly updated by influences traversing the ‘Black Atlantic’ in an on-going and triangular musical conversation.

PRODUCT INFO (Vinyl) February 22, 2019 Artist George Faith Title To Be A Lover Label Bear Family Productions Catalog no. CLP1222 Price code: CLP EAN 5397102122217 Format Vinyl LP (180 gram) in gatefold sleeve Genre Reggae, Dub No. of tracks 8 43:04 mns Release date February 22, 2019 INFO: The definitive soulful reggae album produced and arranged by Lee Perry. Recorded at The Black Ark, 5 Cardiff Crescent, Washington Gardens, Kingston 20, Jamaica. The best Jamaican session musicians incl. Sly Dunbar, Ernest Ranglin and Boris Gardiner. High quality remastering from the original tapes. Including versions of Turn Back The Hands Of Time, Midnight Hour and I’ve Got The Groove. Anyone with a passing interest in music will have heard Bob Marley but anyone with a little more than a passing interest will be familiar with Lee Perry also known as ‘Scratch’ or ‘The Upsetter’. Now better known as a ’performance artist’ his antics and acrobatics on the international festival circuit have gained him a committed following eager to see what Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, now in his eighties, will dare to get up to next. However, throughout the sixties and seventies Scratch was the production genius behind some of the greatest, most complex, and seriously experimental music to ever come out of Jamaica… or anywhere else for that matter. He has made an indelible, incredible contribution to the development of reggae music as a producer, arranger, writer and (occasionally) singer and has been the inspiration behind innumerable developments in the genre In 1968 Scratch’s production of ‘Tighten Up’ with The Untouchables gave the name to Trojan Records’ hugely popular series of albums which were instrumental in crossing over the sound of real reggae to the mainstream audience.

  • The Complexities of an Afrofuturist Reading of Dub
Africa on the Moon: The Complexities of an Afrofuturist Reading of Dub Feature Article John Harries Goldsmiths, University of London (UK) Abstract This article attempts a detailed and specific analysis of the music and the mythology of Lee “Scratch” Perry and other key figures and works in dub, in relation to Afrofuturist thought and the music, theory and philosophy of Sun Ra in particular. It discovers at every turn multiple layers of complication, points of disjuncture as well as confluence, but argues that we can identify complicity and hybridity between these forms and their key protagonists without reducing their distinctiveness or specificity. By viewing dub through an Afrofuturist lens, the article aims to illuminate aspects of dub that would otherwise remain hidden, allowing that here, as in the development and diversification of the musics themselves, the revelatory relationship may be reciprocal. Keywords: Afrofuturism, dub, Sun Ra, Lee “Scratch” Perry, diaspora John Harries is a Lecturer in Popular Music at Goldsmiths, University of London, with specialisms including production, fringe aesthetics in popular music and performance technology. He is also a producer and composer/performer, making electronic pop with Sleeps in Oysters, odd beats and interactive installations as Lake Dysmal and improvised noise with Rutger Hauser. In 2015 he founded record label and artist’s co-operative The Lumen Lake to support grassroots experimental music making in South-East London.
