one-way trip to Mars!!! Sounds scary? Crazy? Qatar resident Mubashshir Ahmed has cleared the first round of selection by Mars One for a trip A to Mars in 2025 to set up a human colony there and, according to the list published on Wikipedia, he is the only one from Qatar to make it to the next round. It is not known how many people applied from Qatar. The United States has the maximum number of candidates selected, followed by India, Russia and Australia. The 27-year-old Indian works in Qatar as a cost engineer and has to clear a few more rounds of the selection process before becoming an astronaut heading to Mars. Even though the whole project sounds quixotic, he is very excited to be one among the 1,058 people from around the world to clear the first hurdle. The idea is still in the initial stages and Mars One is con- fident that they will be able to make the impossible possi- ble. Apart from the technological requirements and ethical questions, the fact that the company plans to raise $6bn needed for the mission through crowd sourcing makes it a very daunting project. According to the official website of the Dutch firm, “Mars One is a not-for-profit organisation that will establish a per- manent human settlement on Mars through the integration of existing, readily available technologies from industry lead- ers worldwide.” The private spaceflight project is led by Dutch entrepre- neur Bas Lansdorp, who announced plans for the Mars One mission in May 2012. Mars One’s current concept includes launching four carefully selected applicants in a Mars-bound spaceflight in 2024, to become the first residents of Mars. Every step of the crew’s journey will be documented for a Mubashshir Ahmed reality television programme. PLUS | TUESDAY 11 FEBRUARY 2014 3

Decoding why motor functions decline with age esearch has found a clue why muscles Rweaken with age. According to scientists from University of Texas’ health science center at San Antonio, ‘set points’ in the nervous sys- tem are not inalterably determined during devel- opment but instead can be reset with age. They observed a change in ‘set point’ that resulted in significantly diminished motor func- tion in aging fruit flies. “The body has a set point for temperature (98.6 degrees Celsius), a set point for salt level in the blood, and other homeostatic (steady-state) set points that are important for maintaining stable functions throughout life,” explained Ben Eaton, assistant professor of physiology at the health science center. “Our study points towards the existence of ‘set points’ in the nervous system, but it has never been observed that they change, until now,” Eaton added. Eaton and team recorded changes in the neuro-muscular junction synapses of aging fruit flies. These synapses are spaces where neu- rons exchange electrical signals to enable motor functions such as walking and smiling. “We observed a change in the synapse, indi- cating that the homeostatic mechanism had adjusted to maintain a new ‘set point’ in the older animal,” researchers said. The change was nearly 200 percent and the researchers predicted that it would leave muscles more vulnerable to Tweak an exercise routine exhaustion. It appears that a similar change could lead to effects on learning and memory in old age. An understanding of this phenomenon would to stay strong after 50 be invaluable and could lead to development of novel therapies for those issues as well, said the study published in The Journal of Neuroscience. HYPER SUDOKU How to play Kakuro: The kakuro grid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells like in a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells will contain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers. However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in the row or column referenced by the number. Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.
