Rosarito Community – Propane Distribution

As of October 24, the propane distribution program was in its 27th week. Each week, a different “colonia” “is served with, at times, two visits in a row for the needier areas. The distribution of clothing continues to be an added feature thanks to the Red Cross Thrift Store, and for the past three weeks, Rosario Castillo, AKA Chayo and owner of MI JACALITO has provided “despensas” or food staples. These are more than the dry goods provided by the government as fresh vegetables and potatoes are included. This continued effort has been made possible by donations. I am grateful to all the individuals who have contributed to helping many needy people – over 600 tanks donated thus far. The program has been an immensely rewarding experience for me, allowing me to discover the poorer side of Rosarito and its marginal neighborhoods. Two outstanding individuals accompany me each week: Salvador Ochoa, a 91-year old man who runs a couple of non-profit organizations for the elderly, and Moises Ahumada, president of Ninos con Cancer. I have also met and conversed with the leaders of each neighborhood and discovered that our city is actually well organized, giving the people of the barrios a sense of belonging. I had planned a fundraising event in November, but was persuaded to cancel since it is still too soon with respect to the pandemia. The price of food has increased dramatically since the pandemia began and so has the price of propane, making it even more difficult for people to make ends meet. I hope to be able to continue the program well into 2021. Sincerely, Danielle Williams
