District Event

Family & Women’s Symposium Dignity, Harmony, Humanity … All Life Matters! Where there is a need there’s a Lion, together we can combat and bring awareness to Stop Human Trafficking

On July 30 every year, the United Nations (UN) promotes World Day Against Trafficking Persons. Human trafficking affects every country in the world. At least 2.5 million people are trapped in modern-day slavery, according to the UN. All around the world, men, women and children are kidnapped, tricked, blackmailed, or manipulated into slavery, prostitution, forced labor, or organ removal. One in four victims are children. More than half of these children are from Africa and the Middle East, and more than one third are from Asia and the Pacific. The UN launched the Day Against Trafficking Persons for the first time on July 30, 2014, to end human trafficking and raise awareness worldwide. The UN works with governments and communities to promote the day through different events and activities. The UN has created a social media campaign, called #igivehope, inviting people to post a photo of a heart formed with your hands to express your support to end human trafficking. This year’s Forum held at the Bernardo Heights Country Club was facilitated by Dr. Jamie Gates, cultural anthropologist and Director of Point Loma Nazarene University’s Center for Justice and Reconciliation. He Co- Chairs the Research and Data Committee of the San Diego County Advisory Council on Human Trafficking; Summer Stephan, Deputy District Attorney; She served as the Chief of the North County Branch of the District Attorney’s Offices from 2003-2005. World Immunization Week April 24-30, 2016

World Immunization Week and LCIF Share the Life - Saving Value of Vaccines

Lions Clubs International Foundation continues to help those in need by taking part in World Immunization Week. Through this event, Lions and their partners are encouraging families to vaccinate their children and raising awareness of the life - saving value of vaccines.

Lions around the world advocate for routine immunization in their communities while assisting the Measles Initiative, a group of organizations dedicated to the elimination of measles. World Immunization Week, beginning on April 21, is an opportunity for Lions to continue advocating for routine immunizations alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Foundation and other Lions partners.

In Haiti, Lions are conducting a nationwide measles vaccination campaign to launch World Immunization Week activities in their country. LCIF is supporting this effort with US$166,000 for measles vaccines.

“Haiti remains at risk for cases imported from other parts of the world because of low vaccine coverage rates here for both polio and measles/rubella among infants,” said Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary.

World Immunization Week and Lions will help Haiti’s government reach a goal of vaccinating 90 percent of the youth population. Haiti is just one of the countries that Lions are supporting by advocating for routine immunization - Lions and LCIF are committed to raising US$10 million for measles vaccinations worldwide.

Lions are also campaigning for measles vaccinations in over 20 countries where measles is a priority, as well as fundraising and providing education in over 200 countries. In countries like Nigeria, for instance, Lions are sharing information about measles through public outreach, education and government advocacy.

Measles is the leading cause of death among young children even though there is a safe and cost - effective vaccine available. Nearly 450 children still die every day from measles. Even if a child does not die from contracting measles, they could suffer from serious complications including blindness, pneumonia or encephalitis.

Routine immunization is one of the most successful and cost effective public health initiatives today. Vaccinations prevent between 2 and 3 million deaths every year from many diseases, including measles, mumps, polio, tetanus and yellow fever.

An estimated 1.7 million children died from vaccine - preventable disease in 2008 before reaching their fifth birthday, according to WHO. Lions around the world have dedicated their time and funds to helping the UN Foundation, WHO and partners at the Measles Initiative to vaccinate children, work with governments and educate the public about the deadly measles disease.

San Diego Lions and Friends Village A Testament of Will and Compassion

Three years ago, Typhoon Yolanda known also as Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most devastating typhoons that hit the Eastern Visayas, in the Philippines left thousands of impoverished families homeless. The San Diego Lions spearheaded by PDG Blesila Sanchez Trott immediately mobilized friends and community leaders to raised funds for a housing project in Tacloban City, in partnership with Gawad Kalinga (To Give Care) Community Development Foundation. The housing project consisting of twenty homes, branded as "San Diego Lions and Friends Village" was inaugurated on February 3, 2016. Out of the 20 homes, 8 homes were already awarded to families who have completed the requirements of occupancy, while the rest are still working to complete the requirements. PDG Blesila Sanchez Trott together with Father Cecilio Moraga and Lion Puring Lee distributed the certificate of ownership to the beneficiaries in the presence of local Lions Clubs.
