The ANZAC Day march is the highlight of the SAMVOA event calendar and all regions across Australia and participate in the various marches and commemorative ceremonies in their respective towns and cities.

Preliminary Meeting Point The preliminary meeting point for all participating members, prior to moving to the march Assembly/Step-Off Point, is close to the Flinders Street Railway Station, on the southern side of the Yarra River at the stairs to the Princes Bridge. (The stairs near to the Melbourne Arts Centre, St Kilda Road). The SAMVOA banner will be clearly visible. Once the SAMVOA members relocate from the preliminary meeting point to the Step-Off Point, late arrivals may have difficulty in finding the SAMVOA platoon in the march line up. Note: due to construction and expected congestion on Flinders and Swanston Streets, the SAMVOA Drill Sergeant will be advised of the exact time and step-off point on ANZAC Day. What to do if you are late: Late arrivals may be able to find the SAMVOA platoon before they depart the designated Step-off Point (to be confirmed) in the vicinity of the corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets (Look for the Young & Jackson ). Veteran late arrivals will fall in at the rear of the platoon.

Location for Preliminary Meeting Point:

Order of March – SAMVOA Veterans All members will fall in as and when called by the drill sergeant. Members will be placed in the platoon by the SAMVOA representative, who will also appoint the Banner Carriers and Flag Bearer. The drill sergeant will call time during the march and all members are expected to maintain the drill discipline customary from your service days.

All members will walk at their own pace from the Step off Point in Swanston Street until reaching St Kilda Road. From that point, instructions from the drill sergeant will be followed by all members and we will proceed as a drill platoon from St Kilda Road along the 800m stretch to the Shrine of Remembrance.

Order of March – Non-Veterans RSL regulations state: “Only a descendant of an Australian, Commonwealth or Allied Veteran AND who is wearing the campaign medals of their forebears on their right chest” is eligible to march. Furthermore, only one descendant may march in honour of each forebear. All non-veterans will fall in behind the SAMVOA Veteran platoon and may choose to either walk at their own pace, or walk to the time as called out by the drill sergeant. Be mindful of the pace when ascending the stairs at the Shrine of Remembrance. While walking within the parade, please do not break from the group to take photos or greet family and friends.

Layout of the SAMVOA Platoon

The platoon will be configured according to the number of members in attendance. See the diagrammatic representation of the proposed platoon structure below, which is based on an anticipated turnout of 40 – 50 members. This structure will be amended dynamically based on the final number of members marching on the day.

Spectators, Supporters and Non-Veteran March Participants

For the best vantage point along the march columns, follow the SAMVOA procession along the Eastern (Botanical Gardens) side of St Kilda Road.

Once the ANZAC Parade commences, the public must avoid crossing through the procession. Event marshals and police will advise when and where you may cross (if at all). It is best to take the underpass under the Princes Bridge at the Preliminary Meeting Point to cross from the West to East side of St Kilda Road.

Barriers at the parade area in front of the Shrine will prevent spectators from accessing the area, but all are invited to meet up with the platoon where the march terminates on the eastern side of the Shrine off Birdwood Avenue.

Spectators and supporters are invited to join in the photo session following the formal photo shoot of the SAMVOA Veteran and Non-Veteran platoon.
