Drukker discusses the only surviving Hebrew-language docu-novel of the Great War, written by Avi- gdor Hameiri (1890-1970), a Hungarian Jewish officer. His 1930 memoir The Great Madness is a war- time personal journal about his life at the Russian front. Many of the episodes described in The Great Madness receive a more styled treatment in Hameiri's wartime short stories which appeared in three collections during the 1920s. These stories are sometimes surreal, symbolic, and carefully crafted. Drukker's study of Hameiri's wartime life writing and his literary rendition of experience into stylized stories shed light on the purpose of his writing, the intended audience, and in particular Hameiri's choices -- linguistic, literary and ideological -- in choosing the medium for recounting and document- ing in writing life experience in extreme conditions. DRUKKER Documentation and Fiction in Hameiri's Accounts of the Great War The Great War (1914-1918) was the most devastating and violent conflict the world has known until then, a total war which resulted in the death of over eight million soldiers and some five million civil- ians on all sides of the conflict. This war changed Europe and brought an end to the existing world order and a break of known traditions and cultures. It was also unprecedented in its literary impact, with thousands of established and future writers taking part and directly affected by the war relating their experiences in writing. Over a million Jewish soldiers participated in the war, of which some also chose the pen to document, and creatively respond to, the horrors they underwent and witnessed (Abramson, Hebrew xii-xix). Of these Jewish writers, Avigdor Hameiri (Feuerstein) stands out for the importance and centrality of the war writings in his overall oeuvre. With a literary career spanning from 1907, with the publication of his first Hebrew poem, to his death in Tel Aviv in 1970, Hemeiri is best remembered for his expressionist poetry and his theater work, mostly satire. A significant share of his literary production is his war literature, which includes two docu-novels, a play, twenty-seven short stories and some fifty poems, but all were composed in a period of about fifteen years, from the time of the war until the 1930s, and Hameiri has not returned to this theme in later life (see Holtz- man, Avigdor 34-35 where he lists all the known First World War Hebrew writers). This paper will ex- amine Hameiri's war diary alongside some of his short stories, in an attempt to understand their sig- nificance both for world literature and for the emerging Hebrew culture of his time. On 11 April 1930, the Mitzpah publishing house placed an advertisement in the Hebrew daily news- paper Davar announcing the publication of the second edition of Hameiri's The Great Madness: Notes -Only a few months previous .(השגעון הגדול: רשימות קצין עברי במלחמה הגדולה) of a Hebrew Officer in the Great War ly, on 6 November 1929, the same paper printed an advertisement for the publication of this book, with the publisher's promotional blurb placing it alongside the great examples of world literature of the Great War. When advertising the second edition, however, it seems like there was no longer a need to elaborate on the content and the quality of the book, as the advert simply reads: "The first edition of ההוצאה הראשונה בת ") "copies sold out within several months – a record for an original Hebrew book 2000 Davar 9). Although the Hebrew term for a) ("2000 אכזמפלרים נמכרה במשך חדשים אחדים – ריקורד של ספר עברי מקור best-seller was not to be coined until a decade later, and at this time there were no formal listings of book sales, Hameiri's book was, in fact, the very first Hebrew bestseller among the Hebrew readers in the land of Israel and the only literary work of its kind published in Hebrew. Its popularity, as well as its reception as a Hebrew example of contemporary European literature, can be found in a review pub- lished in the daily newspaper Doar Hayom from 5 January 1930, by Uri Keisari, who writes that I spent the months May till July 1929 in Europe, on board ships at sea, on trains in land, along borders, French, Belgium, Swiss. Offices, halls, taverns, restaurants, cafés. Everywhere, at every corner, in every hand: All Quiet on the Western Front. In a fatal manner the book would appear everywhere, as if it were an epidemic, a kind of wind blowing and passing from place to place. In a train carriage eight people are sitting. Seven of them are reading. All seven books: All Quiet on the Western Front. On a smaller scale the same is happening with us, now. The Great Madness is found in every hand. On the beach, in the hands of a young woman. In the corridor of the gymnasium [high school], in the hand of a student. On the train, in the hand of the worker. In the city, the moshava, in the village. Despite the stated goals of the trips to Poland, studies involving participating youngsters indicate that Holocaust ed- ucation per se does not significantly affect their sense of Jewish identity. Nonetheless, Holocaust teaching through the journey to Poland enhances participants’ self-concept as Israelis, possibly because their Israeliness is associated with emotions such as power, pride, and hope. In view of these findings, the aim of this study is to examine whether and to what degree faith plays a role in the Holocaust teaching that is part of public and public-religious schools’ efforts to reinforce Jewish identity. Introduction It has been argued that Judaism is the key component of Israeli culture, and the core of Jewish identity (Picar 2009). In Israel, Hebrew is the official language, public holi- days are Jewish holidays (Ben Refael and Ben Haim 2006), and the Zionist ideology that features prominently in Israeli existence is nourished by Jewish tradition (David 2012). All these elements create the impression that Judaism is a dominant element in our culture (Hemo and Sabar Ben-Yehoshua 2009). Furthermore, there is also evidence of growth in Jewish education programs in public schools, even in areas that are con- sidered bastions of secularism (Sabar Ben-Yehoshua, Stein and Pozner 2009). This fact may reflect a broad desire in Israeli society to reinforce the Jewish component of Israeli culture, especially in the education system (Picar 2009).

    The Wounds and Pain of the Holocaust in Haim Gouri’s Filmmaking, Poetry and Fiction Dvir Abramovich Introduction Commenting on the publication of Milim be-dami holeh ahavah (Words in My Lovesick Blood),1 Yair Mazor accurately avers that, “Haim Gouri’s role and status in modern Hebrew poetry as well as in the short history of the state of Israel have made him something of a monument.”2 Indeed, Gouri is the quintessential member of the Palmach 3 generation, that group of authors that came of age with the establishment of the Jewish state and who wrote about the treacherous shoals it had to cross. This article sheds light on the Holocaust-centred oeuvre of the prolific poet, novelist, documentary filmmaker and journalist, who over a rich span of seven decades documented Jewish history’s and Israel’s most painful and tumultuous moments. I offer a reading of several of Gouri’s poems, documentary films, his coverage of the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, and focus primarily on his novella The Chocolate Deal, which still today remains one of the most powerful expressions and forays into the damaged psyche of the survivor. Haim Gouri Feted as one of the pillars of modern Hebrew literature, Haim Gouri (Gurfinkel), the 1988 recipient of the Israel Prize for Poetry, was born on 9 October 9 1923, in Tel Aviv, Palestine.     "The world is filled with remembering and forgetting": Poetic Commemoration of the Battle in Huleikat Yael Shenker and Omri Herzog Abstract The battles fought at Huleikat in the 1948 war tell a tangled and compelling story. Israeli fighters from various brigades fought there in several operations, and the area's conquest in 1948 was strategically significant for Israel. The article focuses on three memories or in fact three strategies of remembering that revolve around the site of these battles: the monument erected at the place, a photograph of Hill 138.5 in Huleikat taken by photographer Drora Dominey that was displayed in an exhibition of Israeli monuments, and a few poems of Yehuda Amichai who fought in that area and lost his close friend Dicky. Emulating terms of analysis proposed by Julia Kristeva this article makes a distinction between semiotic and symbolic memory and argues that Amichai's poetry, like the 138.5 Hill photograph, belongs in a semiotic realm that breaches the limits of consciousness and offers an alternative to national memory. The article further argues that these three memories enable us to trace the painful paths of individual and collective memory as well as the ways in which death mediates among memory, remembering, forgetfulness and obliteration in Israeli culture. The world is filled with remembering and forgetting like sea and dry land. Sometimes memory is the solid ground we stand on, sometimes memory is the sea that covers all things like the Flood.     Israel Affairs, 2014 Vol. 20, No. 2, 182 194, http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/13537121.2014.889886 The image of the ‘living-dead’ in Nathan Alterman’s poetry: from archetype to national symbol Ortsion Bartana* Department for Israel’s Heritage, Ariel University, Israel This article traces the motif of the living dead in Nathan Alterman’s poetry, beginning with Stars Outside and through Ten Plagues of Egypt to The City of the Dove, indicating the way in which Alterman’s literary symbolic structure was gradually replaced by a historical literary one that reflects the influence of historical events the two world wars, the Holocaust, and the War of Independence. With the wiping out of Jewish existence and literature, the Jewish hero became the Jewish victim and national symbol who in sacrificing himself ensured the life of the nation. Keywords: Israel; poetry; Nathan Alterman; Israeli poetry; Haim Nahman Bialik; Shalom Aleichem; living dead; national symbol On revisiting Nathan Alterman’s first volume of poems (Stars Outside) with an eye to the young poet’s independence, one is struck by the double meanings with which they are imbued. Alongside their symbolic, jeu-de-mots character marked by dualistic, oxymoronic, dichotomous paradoxes they also reflect a system of idealized romantic values. This type of reading being precisely that which facilitates the writing of symbolic literature, its appearance should come as no surprise. While this is not the romanticism of Haim Nahman Bialik the romanticism of ‘By Flickering Sundown’, ‘Radiance’, or ‘Take Me Under Your Wing’ its presence places Alterman, rather unexpectedly, far closer to Bialik than to Avraham Shlonsky.

    Selected Works in Hebrew/Israeli Literature Compiled by the Center for Israel Education Tens of thousands of Hebrew literary works were published since the late 18th century. This list of Hebrew literature works that have appeared in English are suggestive and highly limited. For example poetry is virtually absent from this compilation. Great Hebrew writers such as Asher Barash, Yosef Haim Brenner, M.Z. Feierberg, Yitzhak Leib Peretz, Saul Tchnerichovsky, and many many others, and every major and minor wrter who focused exclusively on Zionism is not in this list below. The best basic introductory anthology of Hebrew Literature is is Robert Alter’s Modern Hebrew Literature, Behrman House, 1972. He includes writing examples of the authors not found in our list. Alter’s introduction to his book is as good as one can find on the topic. Ken Stein, December 2014 (Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888-1970): S.Y. Agnon, or Shai, immigrated to Israel in 1907. A prolific Hebrew writer whose works depict the decline of Galician Jewry and the pioneers of Israel, Agnon received the 1966 Noble Prize in Literature, becoming Israel’s first Nobel laureate. Suggested works: A Book that Was Lost and Other Stories A Guest for the Night Nathan Alterman (1910-1970): Alterman was a playwright, poet, and journalist whose influence on Labor Zionism and socialist Jewish policies left him remembered for contributions to politics, despite never holding office. After the Six Day War, he was one of the founders of the Movement for Greater Israel which advocated keeping the newly conquered territories and settling them with Jewish population.

Known as the Holocaust Trilogy, the first film earned an Oscar nomination for best documentary, a feat not matched until 40 years later. Today, we see a remarkable resurgence of these works and this article will explore why this increase in interest is occurring. Keywords: Holocaust History; Cinema; Haim Gouri; Ghetto Fighters Museum. Introduction In this paper, I plan to examine the three films-made and released over a decade-that collectively make up the Ghetto Fighters’ House Holocaust Trilogy. Ghetto Fighters House (GFH) is a Kibbutz founded in April of 1949 and its early membership was exclusively made up from Holocaust survivors. Many of these early members had been involved in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and other members had significant involvement in various resistance movements across Europe. Early in the history of the kibbutz, a museum was established, and it progressively grew into an important facility. Furthermore, GFH was (and still is) one of the premier sites to hold annual Holocaust Commemoration Ceremonies, known as Yom Hashoah events, from the very earliest period of Israel’s history.2 In order to understand the full significance of these works some questions will be raised and addressed: Who is Haim Gouri, what is his contribution to Israel society and how did he become involved in this Holocaust project? Next to be addressed will be the movies and contents.
