Hurley – from the Beginning www.porscheroadandrace.com Hurley – From the Beginning Published: 21st May 2018 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/hurley-from-the-beginning/ www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning (cover) There are just a handful of racing drivers that can list the number and quality of www.porscheroadandrace.com achievements that Hurley Haywood can. True, there might be more than a handful in total, but within each discipline of the sport, there are just a few that stand out. I won’t risk putting down a list here, because if I leave out the name of your favourite driver, you won’t be happy, but I’m sure you know where I’m coming from. But the new book, Hurley – From The Beginning, will open your eyes to what a consistent racing driver Hurley Haywood was, across the continents and across time. © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 2 – Discovered From an early age, Haywood had a desire for all things motoring, but it was probably a Mantz quarter midget petrol-powered car that he received as a Christmas present when just a kid, that grabbed his attention more than anything else. We can probably all mention moments when something significant changed the course of our lives, but for Haywood, this was an important milestone. www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 4 – Back On Track Hurley Haywood was raised in Chicago and Wheaton, Illinois, and even as a teenager after a visit to the Sebring 12 Hour, he didn’t see his future in motor racing. But a chance meeting later with Peter Gregg, changed all of that, and he would soon be driving anything he could get his hands on. There was no doubting Haywood’s driving skills and potential, but equally importantly, it was also life-long relationships with Porsche and the Brumos dealership that provided the kinds of opportunities of which most racing drivers can only dream. www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 6 – 1975 – The Big Year © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 6 – The Ugly The Bad & The Good Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated in 1968, and it was around this time that Haywood was just getting into his stride as a racing driver. Buzz Aldrin and www.porscheroadandrace.com Neil Armstrong were strolling around on the moon in July 1969 while the Woodstock music festival was held in White Lake, New York, only a month later. It was just after winning his class in Haywood’s first professional race at Watkins Glen, that he received his call up papers to serve in the army in Vietnam. All of the above events would have had a profound effect on the outlook of an impressionable young adult making his way in the world during the 1960s. © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 8 – New Directions www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 10 – Moving Forward Haywood returned from Vietnam and got straight back into his racing. The record and various accounts of Haywood’s numerous racing exploits are all explained in great detail in the book, so I will not repeat these here. At the top of that list though, would undoubtedly be his three overall victories at Le Mans, five wins in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and two at the 12 Hours of Sebring. In addition, he won several championships and dozens of other races during a career spanning more than 43 years, making Hurley Haywood one of the world’s most successful endurance sports-car racers. In the process, he made the #59 race number his own, as it has adorned the flanks of almost every race car he drove. www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 12 – The Jaguar Years The book, Hurley – From the Beginning, is a substantial publication in size, weight and significance. The book comprises 420 pages and is packed with more than 650 photos in which Haywood expounds on his illustrious racing career, his colourful personal life, the cars he has driven, and the drivers he has either raced with or against. The story is well told and well written by Haywood and co-author Sean Cridland, and makes for easy, entertaining reading. www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 13 – The Audi Steamroller With the book having such generous proportions, the designer has been able to layout the pages in such a way that makes it enjoyable to page through, without any crowding of text or images. In fact, there are several fantastic double-page photographic spreads, and on the whole, the photography is really rich and supports the text well. Some books read like stuffy old history books crammed with facts and results, not this one, you will find it a breeze. www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 14 – Never a Dull Moment Hurley Haywood tells his story just the way it was, warts and all, pulling no punches along the way, which is great because the reader gets the straight up truth. Over the years, Haywood has rubbed shoulders with countless of the world’s best sports car drivers, and he gives a refreshing account of these encounters in the pages of the book. What is really great, is that the reader will get a complete account of Hurley Haywood’s life and career, from childhood right up to the present day. That takes guts, and Haywood is to be commended for taking this line. www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 16 – Swan Song The book took three years to research and write, and involved innumerable interviews. The Foreword has been written by none other than Patrick Long, Porsche’s only American works driver. Towards the back of the book are a number of very useful reference sections. Firstly, a word from Manfred Jantke (former Porsche PR and Racing Director) and Dan Davis (current owner of the Brumos Group of companies), gives a useful perspective on Hurley Haywood, the man. This is followed by a list of Haywood’s career highlights and achievements, as well as the posts he has held in the sport. The final editorial section of the book contains a representative list, although very comprehensive, of the cars that Hurley Haywood has driven in his 43-year career. Each car is accompanied by a photograph together with a technical spec of that car, expertly compiled by Porsche aficionado, Kerry Morse. www.porscheroadandrace.com © Hurley – From The Beginning, Chapter 17 – Reflections So, should you buy this book? If I were you, I would not hesitate, because if you are like me and enjoy the stories behind the stories, the racing history that unfolded during the 1960s to the 1980s, is like no other period. Haywood’s career spans quite possibly the most exciting period in the history of motorsport, involving all Porsche models from the 911, 914, and through the prototypes right up to the 962 and Dauer Porsche that Haywood was victorious with in 1994 and beyond to the Daytona Prototypes. It is a magnificent book, and definitely not one you want to be seen without! Hurley Haywood, Peter Gregg Chassis No. : 911.360.0705 • Without a doubt one of the most significant Porsche 911 of all time. • Run by the legendary Brumos Team and driven to outright victory in the 1973 Sebring 12 Hours by Peter Gregg, Hurley Haywood and David Helmick. • Retained and preserved in the long term collection of well known Porsche collector Dr. Bill Jackson. • A once in a lifetime opportunity to own the car that claimed one the three most important outright wins for the Porsche 911 of all time. Since the company was founded in 1931 by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, Porsche has been responsible for some of the most iconic cars of all time. Perhaps the most important of these is the Porsche 911, a design concept which has endured for more than half a century and is still successful both commercially on the road and in competition on the race track. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche’s son Ferry, the 911 was a replacement for Porsche’s 356 model and made it’s debut at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was originally badged as the 901 and had a 128hp, 1991cc flat 6 engine in boxer configuration, which was air cooled and rear mounted and mated to a five speed manual transmission. After a mere 82 cars had been produced, a legal challenge from Peugeot concerning the car name, led Porsche to change the name to 911. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. • Amelia Island Concours D'elegance
One more for the bucket list: Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance It was Sunday at 10:30 AM, and I had missed my chance to enter the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance before the line into the show field grew to what looked like thousands of people. This was just the tip of the iceberg, as thousands more already had gained entrance. It was my first Amelia Island Concours, but no, I don’t regret being late to the show. Early that morning, I had walked down to the parking garage on a tip that there would be a couple cars worth photographing on their way out to the field: the Porsche Museum’s 909 Bergspyder and hallowed flat-16-powered 917 PA. In the garage, it was easy to admire their curves, their history, and their cylinder count — 24 between the two of them. Behind the chain-link fence guarding the RM Auction cars, the two Porsches sat. Not another car back there could sway my attention. At 8 AM, they were tugged from their slumber by a golf cart and pulled to the show field. A few Porsches parked on my side of the fence were able to peel me away from the museum-kept racecars for a few moments. The first was the No. 67 BF Goodrich 1985 962, which was driven by Amelia Island honoree Jochen Mass at the 1985 24 Hours of Daytona, where he placed third overall. PCA member Bob Russo, the man who restored it, was standing by its side and spoke to me about the build and how it was finished just the week before.

  • Vern Schuppan
Vern Schuppan Born in Australia, Vern Schuppan won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1983 and was part of the Porsche works team until 1988. Full of hope and optimism, Vern Schuppan went to England in 1969 at the age of 26 to become a racing driver. In 1970, he visited the 1,000 kilometre race at Brands Hatch, where he admired the driving skills of Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez in their Porsche 917. ‘Their performance in the rain was very impressive,’ noted Schuppan. ‘I wonder if I will ever drive a 917?’ In 1972, Schuppan joined John Wyer’s Gulf team, but he was already using the Mirage Ford at this point. It was not until 2012 that his great wish came true: as a 69-year-old racing veteran, Schuppan finally had the opportunity to drive a Porsche 917 at the Le Mans Classic. In the early years of his career, Schuppan competed in some Formula One races for smaller teams like BRM, Ensign, Embassy Hill and Surtees. In the United States, he came third in the Indianapolis 500 in 1981. In the same year, Porsche required him to race in Le Mans, where he took 12th place after some engine problems in the Porsche 936. Racing manager Peter Falk was looking for drivers ‘with brains’ for the new Group C and its fuel consumption regulations – men with a consistent and gentle style. Schuppan was one of those up for selection, and in 1982 he finished second at the side of Jochen Mass when the Porsche 956 made its debut at Le Mans.

  • Porsche's 914 Honored at 20Th Amelia Concours D'elegance
PORSCHE'S 914 HONORED AT 20TH AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS d'ELEGANCE Jacques Duval, Bob Bailey, and George Nichols drove this Porsche 914-6 GT to seventh overall and first in class in the 1971 Daytona 24 hours of endurance. Photo by Bill Warner. The 20th annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance will honor the first mid- engine production Porsche, the 914 in all its variants. At first some Porsche purists lamented the Porsche 914's seemingly humble origins. They whispered the "V-Word" . Volkswagen. The reality was that the 914 is a blood descendant of the seminal Gmund Porsche, the first car to wear the family name and the crest, a pure sports car designed around a Volkswagen- sourced air-cooled flat-four and a mid-engine configuration. Porsche had no illusions about the technological and commercial realities of their new sports car. The 914 project began life as a joint venture between Volkswagen and Porsche who needed an entry level replacement for the four- cylinder 912. With the economies of scale brought by a production liaison with Volkswagen, the 914 could be commercially viable. The prototype 914 appeared early in 1968 just as Porsche was poised to shed its reputation as a giant killer on the world's race tracks. The man heading the 914 project was Porsche R&D chief Ferdinand Piech, Ferdinand Porsche's grandson who created, almost simultaneously with the 914 project, the all- conquering Porsche 917 Le Mans endurance racer. The lower price of the 914 brought a new clientele to Porsche showrooms. The 914 quickly outsold its pricier 911 stablemate while staying true to Porsche's technological heritage with friendly Porsche dynamics, solid handling and, in the case of the 914/6, traditionally ferocious Porsche brakes.

The engine is a Porsche Cayenne-based V8 built as an independent project and mated to a Riley Chassis. First, the #71 TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, with NASCAR star Bobby Labonte at the controls, ran out of fuel on the course and had to be towed into the infield, where the TRG crew met the car, gave it a dump-can of fuel, and got it back on the track.
