We are committed to helping you reach your full potential. General Internal Medicine deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases. Doctors specialising in General Internal Medicine need expert knowledge of a wide range of common acute disorders due to the type of patients they encounter, and often have to manage seriously ill patients with undifferentiated or multi-system disease processes. The vast majority of physicians have a subspecialty interest in diseases affecting particular organs or organ systems. The subspecialties in General Internal Medicine are:

Mid West Hub – UL Hospitals Group

The Mid West BST GIM scheme consists of 2 year rotations, rotating 3 monthly through a number of major sub specialities. Each rotation offers 18 months training in Limerick University Hospital / St Johns’ Hospital and a further six months training (usually during the first year) in one of our affiliated level 3 regional hospitals. These are , & South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel.

We have an excellent educational programme which consists of Medical Case Conferences every Wednesday morning, BST teaching every Monday lunch time and Medical Grand Rounds every Friday at 1pm. As well as this all specialities have their own specific teaching which includes journal clubs and bedside teaching. We also ensure that our trainees who are undertaking their Membership are as prepared as possible. We offer consultant delivered tutorials for the MCQ preparation In the lead up to the clinical exams and we have specific membership orientated tutorials on a weekly basis in a syllabus format as well as holding a half day mock exam in preparation for your MRCP part 2 clinical. We also organise mock interviews for our SHOs who are applying for registrar and SpR programs. Support is available in preparation for progression to SpR training and we encourage all our trainees to partake in research and audit. Each year we have an end of year awards night to recognise the achievements of our NCHDs.

University Hospital Limerick – ‘living and working ‘ “Caring, Courteous and Professional” Welcome to University Hospital Limerick, Ireland’s fastest growing hospital. UL Hospitals, comprising six clinical sites, serves a population of some 400,000 people working as a single hospital system with about 750 acute hospital beds. UL Hospitals provides a comprehensive range of acute and elective in-patient and ambulatory care services. The range and the level of sophistication of specialist and sub-specialist services provided at UL Hospitals are at least on a par with the country’s best. However, UL Hospitals’ greatest asset is undoubtedly its 3,000-strong dedicated and highly professionalised workforce. We have a very dynamic education and research agenda and we aspire to be one of the top three university teaching hospitals in Ireland by 2018. University Hospital Limerick is the newest University Hospital in Ireland and is the principal academic teaching hospital for the Graduate Entry Medical School at the (www.ul.ie/gems). The University hospital is in a rapid growth phase that is providing the optimal infrastructural and human resource framework necessary for the delivery of excellence in clinical care, medical education and scientific research.

UL Hospitals consists of six sites. There is one model 4 hospital and three model 2 hospitals as well as two single specialty hospitals:

 University Hospital Limerick is the Model 4 hospital for the region. It is where all critical care services are located in addition to a 24/7/365 Emergency Department and it is a designated cancer and PPCI centre. All acute and cancer surgery is performed at UHL and it is where all paediatric services are located.  University Maternity Hospital Limerick is a Specialist Hospital and is the sole provider of obstetric/midwifery and neonatology services in the Midwest region. The Hospital serves the counties of Limerick, Clare and Tipperary North Riding, catering for a population of approximately 360,000 people.  Croom Hospital serves Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary as a Specialist Hospital with elective Orthopaedic services for adults and children. Croom also accepts the transfer of Orthopaedic patients from UL Hospitals for post-acute care. In addition to Orthopaedic services, Rheumatology and Pain Management services are provided there.  Ennis Hospital: Since July 2013 Ennis Hospital (Model 2) has a local Injuries Unit and a Medical Assessment Unit. Selected medical patients appropriate to a model 2 hospital are treated there with frequent transfers from UHL. Ennis is unique in having 50 single rooms to accommodate in- patients. Day surgery and endoscopy services are also provided.  Nenagh Hospital: Since September 2012 Nenagh Hospital (Model 2) has a local Injuries Unit and a Medical Assessment Unit. Selected medical patients appropriate to a model 2 hospital are treated there with frequent transfers from UHL. Day surgery and endoscopy services are also provided.  St John’s Hospital is a public voluntary hospital in the centre of Limerick city providing a range of inpatient and outpatient services. It is a Model 2S Hospital with same profile of medical in patients as Ennis and Nenagh Hospitals as well as an LIU and MAU. Intermediate surgical cases that require overnight stay are operated on in St John’s as well as day case endoscopy and surgery.

Since January 2013 UL Hospitals is managed through a Directorate structure. The group has its own interim board, which will assume full responsibility for all activities of the group when independent trust status is granted to the groups in 2018. Mr Graham Knowles is the chairman of the board. An executive management team under the leadership of Prof Colette Cowan, CEO, is responsible for running the hospital group and this is achieved through four directorates: Perioperative, Medicine, Maternal& Child Health and Diagnostics.

NCHD committee

UL hospital group has an active NCHD committee who meet on a weekly basis. Every second week this meeting occurs in the office of the CEO in the company of the Clinical Directors. This committee therefore affords NCHDs in UL Hospitals a strong voice in decisions relating to work conditions and rostering.
