    HYDE PARK LIBRARY NEWS – APRIL 2019 ACCLAIMED SINGER-SONGWRITER JOINED BY GRAMMY WINNING INSTRUMENTALIST FOR LIBRARY APPEARANCE April 12, 2019 Dear Hyde Park Library Patrons, Upstate singer-songwriter Marc Berger's evocation of the American West culminated in his acclaimed 2012 release RIDE. His compositions from that record and from his work since "echo the stark, evocative songs of Springsteen's Nebraska, the cinematic tone of Mark Knopfler and the Lone Star alt-country charms of Guy Clark and Townes Van Zant" (Direct Current). Marc has performed at Austin's South X Southwest and the Kerrville and Falcon Ridge Folk Festivals and has opened shows for Bob Dylan and other several national acts. His song "The Last One” was a staple of Richie Havens' concerts. His acclaimed album RIDE is a collection of songs all having to do with the romance of the American West. The release has gotten national airplay and terrific reviews--and was licensed by Starbucks for worldwide in-store airplay. The concert will combine a performance of RIDE with stories about his experiences as an easterner in the mountain and desert west. He will be joined by Grammy winning producer/musician Steve Addabbo on guitar. The place was the Forrest Theater on West 49th Street, the occasion a benefit for the John Steinbeck Committee for Agricultural Workers. The evening’s performers included Lead Belly, Aunt Molly Jackson, Josh White, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, who alone hailed from New York City. Seeger fumbled his performance of “John Henry” and the evening’s star was Guthrie, “offhand and casual… spinning out stories and singings songs he’d made up,” Seeger recalled. “I just naturally wanted to know more about him.” “Go back to that night when Pete first met Woody,” musician and folklorist Alan Lomax would later reflect. “You can date the renaissance of American folk song from that night.” Soon Seeger and Guthrie, along with Lee Hays, Millard Lampell and Bess Lomax, had formed the Almanac Singers, the first urban folk music group whose line-up, over time, included Josh White, Sis Cunningham, Cisco Houston and Burl Ives. Some of them shared an apartment on 10th Street in the Village. There the Almanacs held “hootenannies” – a made-up word coined by Guthrie and Seeger – to help pay the rent.
