Featured Performer June 14, Johnny Cuomo Sparks and Sticks: Sunday, June 4th; 4-6pm Sparks and Sticks consists of Richard Cohn (songwriter, vocalist, keys) and Paul Rossman (Drummer, Percussionist). They bring together many years of Blues, Jazz, Americana, Vaudeville, R&B and country music as part of their diverse combined musical experience. They will present original songs, sagas, melodies and musings. Interspersed with legends, history and hearsay and the rendering of some very old songs particularly highlighting the magic and music of a bygone Brooklyn. Coney Island and some of its musical progeny will be featured as will songs of deep Brooklyn import. Paul Rossman is recognized as a superlative drum/ percussion player and teacher. Richard Cohn has played with many groups and has written music for film, TV and commercials. He is also noted as a historian of vanished Coney Island. Eileen Pentel was honored by the New Visions Democratic Club as co­founder of the ‘Jackson Heights Martin Luther King, Jr. Mitzvah Day of Service’ as well as for her work as president of Kehillhe Tikvah (a Jewish ‘Community of Hope’). She was presented with a plaque that reads: “In recognition and grateful appreciation of your many contributions to the community and your tireless efforts to make all life better. You are a very special person.” She also received some certificates of recognition from local politicians. Eileen’s brother Harvey, who lives in Phoenix, attended the dinner­dance fundraiser at which Eileen was honored on April 27, 2017. During his visit, they also went to a cousin’s bar mitzvah. A great time was had by all. Jerry Marcus’s second book, With Rake in Hand: Memoirs of a Yiddish Poet, a translation of the memoirs of Yiddish poet, Joseph Rolnik who lived in New York until his death in 1955, has been published by Syracuse University Press (2016) and is available from them or Amazon and other outlets. Rolnik, who wrote poetry at night after laboring in garment factories during the day, became an extremely influential and widely published poet. Marcus’s superb translation and his scholarly introduction to the text have been highly praised. Jerry is an artist as well as a writer and translator. His etchings are on display at an exhibition in Toulouse, France until the end of June. Ann Green has been dedicating a good deal of time to exercise classes in order to counterbalance doctors’ appointments.
