Luca Cumani’s Presvis, twice a winner over the course and distance, appeals if getting a strong pace, which is required for him to be at his best. He is closely matched with Wigmore Hall when they clashed in the Jebel Hatta, the traditional prep, earlier in the month. On that occasion, Wigmore Hall, the Michael Bell-trained gelding ran on strongly to snatch the prize, defeating Group 1 winner Poet’s Voice and Cumani’s gelding in an exciting three-way photo finish. Arguably the winner is open to more improvement in terms of fitness, it was his first start since running a creditable fifth in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket last October. The principal local hope is Derbaas, representing last year’s winning yard, ticks plenty of boxes and is feared. He has thrived this winter in Dubai, winning four times including the Al Fahidi Fort, a Group 2 event on turf, where the runner-up Raihana re-opposes. The De Kock-trained filly, second in last year’s UAE Derby, is one of two runners representing the South African maestro who has won this race twice. His second runner River Jetez has stronger claims, having caught the eye when winning the Balanchine Stakes, slamming Reem and ten others, over the same course and distance. The highly-progressive Beauty Flash, unbeaten in his last three starts, carries the hopes of Hong Kong. The step up to 1800m doesn’t look ideal, while it is slightly disconcerting that he failed to deliver in his sole international foray, the Yasuda Kinen.     Trainers Profile Asami, Hidekazu Cup – Sungrazer Age: 67. Hidekazu Asami is the son of Kuniichi Asami, a former champion jockey and trainer in Japan. Asami worked at his father’s stable from 1973 and he obtained his trainer’s licence in 1991. His first G1 win came seven years later when Mejiro Bright took the Tenno Sho Spring in 1998. Yamanin Sucre (2003 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies), 2006 Hong Kong Vase fourth Song Of Wind (2006 Kikuka Sho), Reginetta (2008 Oka Sho) and Rainbow Line (2018 Tenno Sho Spring) brought further top-class successes to his stables. He has amassed a total of 583 JRA wins in his career, including 29 of them this year (as of 19 November). Hong Kong wins: 0 Balding, Andrew Mile – Beat The Bank Age: 45. The introduction of four sire- and dam-restricted races that year has now grown into 16 2-year-old contests to be run over at least seven furlongs during the second half of the season.
