The film catapulted Christopher Lee to international stardom, he brings a mixture of menace, eroticism and horror to the role. Peter Cushing in the role of vampire hunter brings to the screen a mix of tenderness and brutality. The censors insisted on cuts that Hammer got around by re-shooting and editing. After Dracula, acting pros Deborah Walley and John Crawford join forces in the dramatically titled The Severed Arm, a macabre tale of forced cannibalism and revenge; perfect late night entertainment! In this weeks episode they uncover a short film of holiday snapshots from 1958 and look at a newly discovered episode of the series Boyd QC, a British court and legal drama transmitted from December 1956 to 1964 by the ITV franchise holder, Associated-Rediffusion. It focused on a barrister in a London courtroom, played by Michael Denison and the cases in which he was involved, running for seven series in total. Of around 80 episodes only a handful have been found so far. Created and written by Jack Roffey (a real-life assize court official) and filmed in semi-doc- umentary style, the series was one of the first programmes to explore the world of the British judiciary, becoming a major hit. This episode, entitled The Shropshire Lass, stars June Laverick and the credits say she’s in the film by kind permission of Rank. June Laverick is probably best remembered as the fictional wife of Dickie Henderson in The Dickie Henderson Show. Taking Pictures viewers will have seen June in Follow A Star with Norman Wisdom and as Princess Maria in The Duke Wore Jeans. Airs: Sunday 12th September 12pm. Despite the Prime Minister’s attempt to limit its impact, the conflict set in train transformations that meant Britain would never be the same again. Whether the Second World War was the great discontinuity some historians claim – and the precise extent to which it radicalized the country – remain moot questions, but it undoubtedly changed many people’s lives and made some question how they had been governed before the conflict.1 The war also paved the way for Labour’s 1945 general election victory, one underpinned by the party’s claim that through a welfare state, the nationalization of key industries and extensive government planning it could make Britain a more equal society. The key political moment of the war came in late May and early June 1940 when Allied troops were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk. The fall of France soon followed, meaning Britain stood alone against Hitler’s forces and became vulnerable to invasion for the first time since Napoleon dominated Europe.

  • RELATIONS "This Is My Commandment, That You Love One Another (Ἀγαπᾶτε) As I Have Loved (Ἠγάπησα) You
RELATIONS "This is my commandment, that you love one another (ἀγαπᾶτε) as I have loved (ἠγάπησα) you. No one has greater love (ἀγάπην) than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. John 15:12f There are several words in Greek for the one English word, “love”. I thought I would illustrate their meaning with reference to Hollywood. The first two words are Eros (ἔρως) which means to be infatuated with a person, an object or an idea, and storge (στοργή), which is familial love, the love of parents (and grandparents) for their children. Then two other words: φιλέω and ἀγαπάω. The first means to have a warm affection for another and the second, to wish one well. The ancient Greeks considered Eros to be dangerous and frightening as it involved a “loss of control,” as though to say, “I couldn’t help myself.” It is the appreciation of beauty both external and within. It’s what we view frequently on the silver screen. I would guess that most movies at the moment are romances. To be a success in my book they need to have a memorable musical score and demonstrate that “the path of true love never did run smooth.”1 The lovers need to fight, separate, or even die. I have chosen West Side Story (1957), Leonard Bernstein’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.2 The Jets and the Sharks are two gangs who are bitter enemies, fighting for turf in New York City. Tony and Maria, members of rival gangs, fall in love and sing: “Make of our hands one hand; make of our hearts one heart.” After the rumble, Chino who was engaged to marry Maria shoots Tony and he dies in his lover’s arms.
