  • 'Sexing the Single Girl: Adapting Helen Gurley Brown Without Reading Her Book
'Sexing the Single Girl: Adapting Helen Gurley Brown without reading her book Helen Gurley Brown published Sex and the Single Girl in 1962, its enormous success prefiguring her role in reshaping Cosmopolitan in the 1960s. Since her recent death aged 90 her impact as the author of this famous bestseller and as Editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan has been the subject of further attention. Most obviously, her self-help manual is seen as a foundational text for Sex and the City and a celebration of the single girl as anticipating the abundant portrayals of the urban singleton. My paper today is focused on how her status as author of Sex and the Single Girl is positioned in the 1964 film of the same name, starring Natalie Wood and Tony Curtis and directed by Richard Quine. This is a direct and conscious adaptation in the sense that film rights were secured and writers were commissioned to produce a script; but the resulting rom com has only two obvious links to the text – a bestselling book and the author’s name (with the addition of a PhD). Unlike some of the classic Doris Day rom coms, Helen is forced to acknowledge the fact of her virginity by the attempts of men who pressurize her into announcing and accepting its symbolic implications. The story in brief is that Dr Brown, a researcher at the ‘Institute of Pre- Marital and Marital Studies’, has written a bestselling book (Sex and the Single Girl), which, like Brown’s, advocates acceptance that single women can have a healthy sex life.

  • RELATIONS "This Is My Commandment, That You Love One Another (Ἀγαπᾶτε) As I Have Loved (Ἠγάπησα) You
RELATIONS "This is my commandment, that you love one another (ἀγαπᾶτε) as I have loved (ἠγάπησα) you. No one has greater love (ἀγάπην) than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. John 15:12f There are several words in Greek for the one English word, “love”. I thought I would illustrate their meaning with reference to Hollywood. The first two words are Eros (ἔρως) which means to be infatuated with a person, an object or an idea, and storge (στοργή), which is familial love, the love of parents (and grandparents) for their children. Then two other words: φιλέω and ἀγαπάω. The first means to have a warm affection for another and the second, to wish one well. The ancient Greeks considered Eros to be dangerous and frightening as it involved a “loss of control,” as though to say, “I couldn’t help myself.” It is the appreciation of beauty both external and within. It’s what we view frequently on the silver screen. I would guess that most movies at the moment are romances. To be a success in my book they need to have a memorable musical score and demonstrate that “the path of true love never did run smooth.”1 The lovers need to fight, separate, or even die. I have chosen West Side Story (1957), Leonard Bernstein’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.2 The Jets and the Sharks are two gangs who are bitter enemies, fighting for turf in New York City. Tony and Maria, members of rival gangs, fall in love and sing: “Make of our hands one hand; make of our hearts one heart.” After the rumble, Chino who was engaged to marry Maria shoots Tony and he dies in his lover’s arms.

Moran: How Second-Wave Feminism Forgot the Single Woman HOW SECOND-WAVE FEMINISM FORGOT THE SINGLE WOMAN Rachel F. Moran* I cannot imagine a feminist evolution leading to radicalchange in the private/politicalrealm of gender that is not rooted in the conviction that all women's lives are important, that the lives of men cannot be understoodby burying the lives of women; and that to make visible the full meaning of women's experience, to reinterpretknowledge in terms of that experience, is now the most important task of thinking.1 America has always been a very married country. From early colonial times until quite recently, rates of marriage in our nation have been high-higher in fact than in Britain and western Europe.2 Only in 1960 did this pattern begin to change as American men and women married later or perhaps not at all.3 Because of the dominance of marriage in this country, permanently single people-whether male or female-have been not just statistical oddities but social conundrums.

FRAMING FEMININITY AS INSANITY: REPRESENTATIONS OF MENTAL ILLNESS IN WOMEN IN POST-CLASSICAL HOLLYWOOD Kelly Kretschmar, B.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2007 APPROVED: Harry M. Benshoff, Major Professor Sandra Larke-Walsh, Committee Member Debra Mollen, Committee Member Ben Levin, Program Coordinator Alan B. Albarran, Chair of the Department of Radio, Television and Film Sandra L. Terrell, Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Kretschmar, Kelly, Framing Femininity as Insanity: Representations of Mental Illness in Women in Post-Classical Hollywood. Master of Arts (Radio, Television, and Film), May 2007, 94 pp., references, 69 titles. From the socially conservative 1950s to the permissive 1970s, this project explores the ways in which insanity in women has been linked to their femininity and the expression or repression of their sexuality. An analysis of films from Hollywood’s post-classical period (The Three Faces of Eve (1957), Lizzie (1957), Lilith (1964), Repulsion (1965), Images (1972) and 3 Women (1977)) demonstrates the societal tendency to label a woman’s behavior as mad when it does not fit within the patriarchal mold of how a woman should behave. In addition to discussing the social changes and diagnostic trends in the mental health profession that define “appropriate” female behavior, each chapter also traces how the decline of the studio system and rise of the individual filmmaker impacted the films’ ideologies with regard to mental illness and femininity. Your Corporate Story. Media Management On Video - In the News - On the Web Contact: Rick Kramer Marti Rulli Statement Submitted With Public Petition to LACSD: I, Margaret Rulli, a citizen of the USA in New Jersey, residing at hereby state as follows: 1. I make this declaration for the purpose of inducing the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to re-investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Natalie Wood on November 29, 1981 and to re-open the case for appropriate action as warranted. 2. Relevant facts include: Natalie Wood’s scarcely investigated death will continue to inflame controversy until a full-scale professional evaluation is completed. Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour (GNGS), the book I authored with the former Splendour Captain, Dennis Davern, has answered the persistent curiosity of many readers, but information continues to surface, emphasizing the dire need for a full scale, official investigation. Marilyn Wayne, the only witness to hear Natalie’s cries for help—a vital witness ignored by authorities—has offered to publicly submit to a polygraph test to validate her account. Lead detective Rasure has always belittled Wayne for her adamant claim that Wood was in the water just minutes after 11 P.M. Wayne’s account is consistent with Davern’s account, yet these two crucial w itnesses, bot h w illing t o unde rgo pr ofessional pol ygraph t esting, c ontinue t o b e discounted and their motives questioned. Robert W agner’s book, Pieces of M y H eart only b riefly a ddressed the w eekend of hi s wife’s death—his account differed from the various versions he has told over the years.
