STOCKS TO WATCH Energetic performance from Con Edison illuminates shaky state of the markets ANYBODY LOOKING for confirmation of a major shift in the tone of the stock market should look no further than Con Edison. The shares have gained a whopping 17% in the last year, 11% in the last six months alone. The utility has never been terrifically exciting, but it has also never missed a dividend— and these days that counts for a lot with increasingly fretful investors. At its current price the stock has a tidy dividend yield of 4.6%. How quickly they forget. Fact is that Moody’s has posted an unbroken string of double-digit earnings gains stretching back to 2000, and the company looks likely to maintain that performance with its next report late this month. Still, fears of a big decline in Moody’s debt-rating business and mounting criticism of its ratings of some subprime loans helped send the shares down 5% last week and over 10% so far this year. On Wednesday, the NYSE Group is scheduled to become half of the world’s largest—in market capitalization—stock exchange, with the completion of its merger with Paris-based Euronext. Investors rewarded the NYSE, pushing the shares up steeply. In the last year they have gained 19%, compared with a 27% drop in the value of Nasdaq, which recently lost its bid to merge with the London Stock Exchange. charts: lindström bekka

MISPLACED EFFORTS TO FIGHT HUNGER i read with interest and dismay the March 19 profile of Shyama Venkateswar. It is unfortunate that the Mercy Corps chooses to raise money for a shrine for poverty and hunger in a first-world city. Apart from doing nothing to alleviate poverty, it will only create a sinecure for staff employed by it. Contrary to Ms.Venkateswar’s assertion that income equality has not increased in India, independent studies have shown that while absolute poverty numbers have risen, relative numbers have only improved. Sure, there are plenty of problems in India and other developing countries, but her efforts would be better served by advocating policy prescriptions for that country rather than spending dollars here to reach the next generation here. vijay dandapani

JAVITS EXPANSION SHOULD GO SOUTH crain’s is wrong to support the current plan to expand the (“History lesson on Javits Center,” March 19). The only way to avoid an inefficient and inadequate vertical expansion or the $400 million to $800 million expense of relocating the Quill bus garage and provide the exhibition and meeting space Javits requires is to utilize the four open blocks to the south. The fact that a city and state engineering and architectural focus on western rail yard development is now in progress ensures that a southern Javits expansion could be built on something close to the current timetable. daniel gutman

To qualify for this list, institutions must meet the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s definition of a commercial bank: banks with state or national charters that are supervised by the Comptroller of the Currency, the Federal Reserve or the FDIC; their U.S. headquarters must be in the New York area. All figures are for the bank unit only, not the holding company, and are for the calendar year. Figures other than those for loan types and nonperforming loans as a percentage of assets have been rounded to one decimal place. Nonperforming loans as a percentage of assets are based on unrounded numbers. Loan type percentages may not add to 100.00% in every instance due to calculation components being reported in thousands in the regulatory filings. 1-Total consolidated commercial and industrial loans as a percentage of total consolidated loans and leases (net of unearned income and gross of reserve). Includes loans made to small businesses. 2-Total consolidated consumer loans as a percentage of total consolidated loans and leases (net of unearned income and gross reserve). 3-Domestic office loans secured by one- to four-family residential properties and domestic office loans secured by multifamily residential properties (five or more units). 4-Consolidated total real estate loans less residential real estate loans. 5-Loans to depository institutions, agricultural production loans, foreign government loans, loans to state and political subdivisions, all other loans and total leases. 6-Total loans and lease financing receivables net of unearned income. 7-On March 27, 2007, Bank of America received approval to acquire U.S. Trust Corp. 8-On April 28, 2006, New York Community Bancorp acquired Atlantic Bank of New York.
