It produced two great political myths, namely the Leninist variant of Marxism and Nazism. Both aimed at the total control of society, including the human spirit. Thanks to the nature of the human spirit, which is per definition free, against the background of organized insanity and destruction, countless intellectual and cultural jewels were created. The Hungarian-Transylvanian philosopher György Bartók de Málnás belonged to that select group of people, who were following their own course, their own destiny and were not deterred by the siren calls of the day. Bartók was a pure philosopher, university professor, publisher of a philosophical journal, who never yielded an inch to gain cheap popularity. As a university professor during the 1930s and 1940s he looked down at the Nazi movements, which gained popularity in that period. And after the end of World War II, when the occupying Soviet troops installed a communist system in Eastern and Central Europe, including Hungary, he endured with stoic calm his purge from the Hungarian academic life, including his exclusion from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His œuvre, however, though officially purged by Communist zealots, survived in the hearts and minds of his students, who saved many copies of his work. And after

Shankar was born to a Bengali family in Varanasi, India, and spent his youth touring India and Europe with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956. In 1956 he began to tour Europe and the Americas playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and Beatles guitarist George Harrison. Shankar engaged Western music by writing compositions for sitar and orchestra, and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s.

    India is everywhere. Through migration, the cultural diversity of the subcontinent has crossed oceans, while Bollywood films have brought it to the farthest corners of the world. The complex codes in which film, music and dance intersect may initially baffle the uninitiated—and is frequently looked down upon as kitsch by the guardians of European high culture. However, the influence of Indian culture worldwide is enormous. This is all taken into account in WASSERMUSIK 2015, under the title “Mother India”: Asha Bhosle, Bollywood’s superstar singer, gives her first concert in Germany. The tabla-electro musician Talvin Singh and the folk legend Mike Heron perform sets prepared exclusively for WASSERMUSIK, while the Konkani Goan All Stars come together specially for the festival. Further highlights include: bhangra from Brooklyn, the artistic wealth of legendary film composers such as R.D. Burman, Bengali jazz from London, sitar meets steel drum from Trinidad, singer-songwriting, Sufi vocals and ghetto tech. The film program spans the entire range from great Hindi film classics such as the festival’s namesake “Mother India” from 1957, through to controversial contemporary independent films such as “Gandu.” The venue this year will be the lawn next to the Mirror Pond in front of HKW as the roof terrace is currently under renovation. BALKANSKI VESTERN: čovek, gitara i pas Odrednice Dubrovčanin, šansonjer, akustičar, enigmatične su za većinu pobornika civilizovane muzike sa ex-Yu prostora mlađe od 40 godina. Stariji diskofili, pak, iz prve prepoznaju legendarnog Ibricu Jusića, koji je, kako kaže priča, nastupao u sidnejskoj Operi, njujorškom Karnegi holu, pariskoj Olimpiji, na Tivoli festivalu u Štokholmu, Džez festivalu u švajcarskom Montreu, živeo i svirao dvanaestak godina u Parizu, da izdvojimo tek ponešto. Rođen decembra 1944. u Dubrovniku, muzičku karijeru započeo je doslovno „sa skalina“ sredinom šezdesetih (pomenuti diskofili setiće se kako su na tim skalinama/stepenicama sedeli kasnih 1970-ih, tek pristigli u dubrovačko leto, sa samarašima na leđima i vrećama za spavanje, uz kružeći bocun crnjaka; dodajmo duge kose, šarene perle, živopisnu odeću, mir i ljubav, i asocijacija na Vudstok-u-malom neće biti slučajna). 2 Delić srodne atmosfere osetili smo i ovog sunčanog subotnjeg popodneva na travnatom proplanku Botaničke bašte (Beograd): iznenađujuće lep prostor za koncerte na otvorenom, sa odlikama bezmalo kamerne, klubske intime, uz dobro pozicioniranu veliku binu. Publika nasmejana, sedi na travi, prosek godina oko 30. Ni traga ikakvoj „koncertnoj agresivnosti“, mnogi sa čašom piva u ruci, bez pušenja (koje u Botaničkoj bašti inače nije dozvoljeno), sitna deca trče unaokolo. Drveće zaklanja grad. Na bini gospar Ibrica, a pored njega leži nerazdvojni pas. Skladno prohujalim decenijama, nije jedan od prethodnika koje pamtimo (Vagi, Arči), već crni belgijski ovčar Bond. Za kolege gitariste pomenimo da je Ibrica tokom nastupa koristio dve tzv. elektroakustične gitare: klasičnu sa strunama, i tek povremeno „Ovation“ dvanaesterca, pretežno sa kapodastrom (često na trećem ili prvom pragu), uz jednu, verovatno „volume“, pedalu.

His compositions, most of which include distinct Thai musical elements and Thai cultural influences within the guise of Western art music, are emblematic of a trend in contemporary composition that embraces worldwide influences. This thesis is a first step toward the literature of this compositional trend of Thai/Western musical fusion. It begins with a survey to different approaches of applying exotic elements into Western compositions, focusing on the fusion of Western and Far Eastern musical/non-musical elements of China and Indonesia. The focus then shifts to the cross-cultural interplay between Thai and Western elements that has appeared throughout Thai music history. The main topic of thesis ensues, with the presentation of Prangcharoen’s musical background, his creative process, and his synthesis of Thai influences and Western compositional techniques in his orchestral music. The purpose of this thesis is to be not only a principal source in iii apprehending Prangcharoen’s life and works, but also a foundation for any future study relating to Prangcharoen or other Thai composers and their compositions.
