Discover Joyce's Dublin by Reading and Running Barry Sheehan / Dublin School of Creative Arts / Dublin Institute of Technology Discover Joyce’s Dublin by Reading and Running James Joyce told his friend Frank Budgen: “I want’ said Joyce, as we were walking down the Universitätstrasse, ‘to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book” (Budgen, 1960, p.67, 68). This paper looks at the relevance of Dublin to Joyce’s writings and of the relevance of Joyce’s writings to Dublin. It is concerned with the virtual Dublin of Joyce’s writings, the physical manifestation of Dublin over time, and the relationships between them. Numerous scholars read and analyse the writings of Joyce without ever visiting Dublin. Is it necessary to visit Dublin to fully appreciate Joyce’s writings and is it necessary to read his writings to fully appreciate Dublin? What can be discovered in Dublin that cannot be discovered remotely? Could you recreate Dublin from Joyce’s writings? LANG N Earthly Powers, among the finishing touches Anthony Burgess puts I to his caricature of Joyce at middle age, we find a trace of an earlier portrait of the artist. Hearing thunder, Burgess's "Poor fearful Joyce" reverts to prayer: "0 blessed Sacred Heart of Jesus keep us from harm."1 In the "Circe" episode of Ulysses, Stephen Dedalus, "Choking withfright, remorse and horror," confronts his dead mother. 2 "0 Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on him!" moans the apparition: "Save him from hell, o divine Sacred Heart!" (U 582). The prayer recited by Burgess's Joyce in 1923 and that recited to Joyce's Stephen in 1904 both resemble the invocations in "The Litany of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,"3 which is contained in numerous prayerbooks and religious manuals, including Devotions to the Sacred Heart ofJesus, published in Dublin. 4 What makes this particular work significant is that, two pages before the Litany of the Sacred Heart, we discover the origin of the sentence which accounts for Stephen's famous assault upon the brothel chandelier, the sentence which leaves him "Translating his spiritual into physical rebellion."5 Preceding the Litany is "An Act of Reparation"- "For the innumerable Irreverences and grievous Offences, by which we and others have insulted the Heart ofJesus" (Dev 304-06).

ABSTRACT This thesis considers the imbrications created by James Joyce in his writing with the work of John Milton, through allusions, references and verbal echoes. These imbrications are analysed in light of the concept of ‘presence’, based on theories of intertextuality variously proposed by John Shawcross, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, and Eelco Runia. My analysis also deploys Gumbrecht’s concept of stimmung in order to explain how Joyce incorporates a Miltonic ‘atmosphere’ that pervades and enriches his characters and plot. By using a chronological approach, I show the subtlety of Milton’s presence in Joyce’s writing and Joyce’s strategy of weaving it into the ‘fabric’ of his works, from slight verbal echoes in Joyce’s early collection of poems, Chamber Music, to a culminating mass of Miltonic references and allusions in the multilingual Finnegans Wake.

James Joyce's Ulysses provides a basis for examining and analyzing the influence of Joyce on selected works of William Faulkner and Anthony Bur­ gess especially in regard to the major ideas and style, and pattern and motif. The works to be used, in addi­ tion to Ulysses, include Faulkner's "The Bear" in Go Down, Moses and Mosquitoes and Burgess' Nothing Like the Sun. For the purpose, then, of determining to what de­ gree Joyce has influenced other writers, the ideas and techniques that explain his influence such as his lingu­ istic innovations, his use of mythology, and his stream­ of-consciousness technique are discussed. Procedure. Research includes a careful study of each of the works to be used and an examination of var­ ious critics and their works for contributions to this influence study. The plan of analysis and presentation includes, then, a prefatory section of the dissertation which provides a general statement stating the thesis of this dissertation, some background material on Joyce and his Ulysses, and a summary of the material discussed in each chapter. Next are three chapters which explain Joyce's influence: an introduction to Joyce and Ulysses; Joyce and Faulkner; and Joyce and Burgess.     99 Stephen Hero: An Outline Commentary Stephen Hero was the earlier form of what became A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It is frequently wordy and stilted but amazingly vital and merits independent study both for its intrinsic value and for the light that it provides us for the later works. The work is a fragment and is divided into two parts. The first part, recently discovered comparatively speaking, concerns young Stephen’s trip to and stay in Mullingar where he visits his godfather and patron. It ends on page 505. The larger fragment begins with page 519. This is not a large gap but it is sufficient to make the connection between the two parts complete so that they can be considered independently. The Mullingar fragment opens with an invocation, the relation of which to what follows is obscure. From what survives it appears to be an expression of the lure of Europe for Stephen but it may also be about that and about the demands of nationalism. Stephen in this book is Stephen Daedalus, the name chosen for the original (and rejected) sketch that formed the basis for both Stephen Hero and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. In the latter work Joyce changed the name to Dedalus. He travels by train to Mullingar and the distance is fifty miles from Broadstone, one of the four train terminals of Dublin. (It’s the only one no longer in service.) Stephen compares his body odor to that of the peasants. He has a strong, if somewhat irrational, preference for his own.

    “TWO NOTES IN ONE THERE”: COUNTERPOINT AS PARADIGM IN JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES by FRANCES VICTORIA LOVELACE (Under the Direction of Adam Parkes) ABSTRACT In this study of James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) I discuss the limits and dangers of using analogies between musical and literary works without firmly understanding the musical model that is being brought into comparison with the novel in question. Conversely, I show that a musical paradigm such as counterpoint, if properly defined, can be a very useful method by which to read and understand Joyce, since the syntax of music is as important to (and ever- present within) the world of Ulysses as that of the English language. I demonstrate that a contrapuntal reading of the often-overlooked “Wandering Rocks” episode serves to uncover some darkly ironic questions about Anglo-Irish politics, and that while the fugal structure that Joyce claimed for “Sirens” is a deeply suspect analogy, a reading of the musical notation within the episode leads to a new understanding of Leopold Bloom in relation to his wife, Molly. ($35.00) Lee Brewer Jones Georgia Perimeter College Online Regarding Gordon Bowker’s new James Joyce biography, one question immediately springs to mind: why? Herbert Gorman’s 1939 biography was authorized, and Richard Ellman’s 1959 work, although hoary, is still venerated. Bowker begins by acknowledging he must “stand on the shoulders of these and other books” (xi). Then, he asserts he “will attempt to go beyond the mere facts and tap into Joyce’s elusive consciousness” (8). Bowker’s biography, furthermore, “is informed by the belief that it is enlightening to view the work of a highly autobiographical writer like Joyce in the context of his life” (8). What Bowker does not state is that Gorman’s biography, overseen by the author himself, borders on hagiography. Ellman, too, labored at a time when members of Joyce’s family and some of his fiercest protectors survived. Both the passing of these individuals and the wealth of material discovered since Ellman revised his book in 1982 justify a writer with Bowker’s perspective reexamining the “riverrun” (5) that constitutes Joyce’s life and work. Bowker divides the 540 pages of James Joyce: A New Biography purely by chronology into 35 chapters, some covering only a few months of a capstone year, such as 1904. Each chapter receives its own title; one memorable choice is “Ulysses: Inside the Dismal Labyrinth 198 www.cea-web.org Summer/Fall THE CEA FORUM 2013 (1920 – 1921).” Writing in a straightforward style, Bowker plumbs both the shallows and the depths of the Liffey, the river that meanders throughout Joyce’s works even though he rarely saw it after 1904, when he was in his early twenties, and never at all after 1912.

Paralysis as “spiritual liberation” in Joyce’s Dubliners. Master of Arts (English), May 2014, 50 pp., references, 26 titles. In James Joyce criticism, and by implication Irish and modernist studies, the word paralysis has a very insular meaning. The word famously appears in the opening page of Dubliners, in “The Sisters,” which predated the collection’s 1914 publication by ten years, and in a letter to his publisher Grant Richards. The commonplace conception of the word is that it is a metaphor that emanates from the literal fact of the Reverend James Flynn’s physical condition the narrator recalls at the beginning of “The Sisters.” As a metaphor, paralysis has signified two immaterial, or spiritual, states: one individual or psychological and the other collective or social. The assumption is that as a collective and individual signifier, paralysis is the thing from which Ireland needs to be freed. Rather than relying on this received tradition of interpretation and assumptions about the term, I consider that paralysis is a two-sided term. I argue that paralysis is a problem and a solution and that sometimes what appears to be an escape from paralysis merely reinforces its negative manifestation. Paralysis cannot be avoided. Rather, it is something that should be engaged and used to redefine individual and social states.
