Carroll News 2009 Lucrezia Culicchia Award for Teaching Excellence

Nominations are now being accepted from students or faculty for the Lucrezia Culicchia Award for Teaching Excellence in the College of Arts and Sciences. This is the most important award that recognizes outstanding teaching within the College of Arts and Sci- ences faculty. The award will carry a two thousand dollar stipend.

Nominations should include the following:

1. A letter of nomination which includes a statement and/or documentation that the nominee has made a distinct difference in the teaching climate of the College in such areas as: model classroom teaching, campus leadership on teaching issues, pioneering teaching methodology, creative course development and/or instructional support.

2. Letters from at least three John Carroll University students who have taken at least one course with the nominee.

3. Letters from two faculty colleagues.

4. Letters of support from alumni would be welcome.

Nominations with supporting documentation should be submitted to the Office of the Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, no later than Wednesday, February 25, 2009. The award will be presented at the Fall 2009 faculty meeting of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Just two weeks ago, an infamous cab driver known for catering to JCU students was involved in a fender bender with a group of students. The cab driver was ticketed for failure to control a vehicle and the driver was left with damage to his car. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

This instance is just one example of unsafe transportation that students continue to rely on. They also pile into cars, drive drunk and walk long distances in freezing temperatures just to get to a party or bar. While Student Union worked diligently to get the West Loop

Shuttle approved and a pilot program was successfully executed, the shuttle is no longer running and its future remains uncertain. The administration needs to seriously evaluate if it is truly do- ing its part in making sure students are safe, by revamping the transportation that it offers. Regardless of whether or not a shuttle service is implemented “ on the weekends, it does not deter students from wanting to go out on Thursday nights.
