Although sagittal and transverse series of images produced little resolution of internal or- gans, movements of the heart and scaphognathites were easily detected. This paper reveals the ability to monitor the activities of these organs in brachyuran crabs.

Unfortunately, marine zooplankton biodiversity is not well known because of difficult morphological identifications and lack of taxonomic experts for many groups. In addition, the large taxonomic diversity present in plankton and low sampling coverage pose challenges in obtaining a better understanding of true zooplankton diversity. Molecular identification tools, like DNA barcoding, have been successfully used to identify marine planktonic specimens to a species. However, the behaviour of methods for specimen identification and species delimitation remain untested for taxonomically diverse and widely-distributed marine zooplanktonic groups. Using Canadian marine planktonic crustacean collections, I generated a multi-gene data set including COI-5P and 18S-V4 molecular markers of morphologically-identified Copepoda and Thecostraca (Multicrustacea: Hexanauplia) species. I used this data set to assess generalities in the genetic divergence patterns and to determine if a barcode gap exists separating interspecific and intraspecific molecular divergences, which can reliably delimit specimens into species. I then used this information to evaluate the North Pacific, Arctic, and North Atlantic biogeography of marine Calanoida (Hexanauplia: Copepoda) plankton.

Germany ABSTRACT: The dominant large copepods Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus were collected south of 65's in the Antarctic Weddell Sea in late winter-early spring (October-November) and summer (January-February), and the lipid and fatty acid/alcohol compositions of copepodite stages V and females of these suspension feeders were analyzed. The lipids of C. acutus consisted mainly of wax esters. Major fatty acids in summer were 20:l(n-g), 20:5(n-3), 22:6(n-3), 18:4(n-3), 22:l(n- 11) and 16:l(n-7). In winter the amount of 18:4(n-3) decreased considerably in both stages, as did that of 20:5(n-3) in females, whereas the quantity of 20:l(n-9) showed a strong increase in females. During both seasons the fatty alcohols in the wax esters were strongly dominated by 20:l(n-9) and 22:1 (n- 11). In contrast, the bulk of the llpids of C. proplnquus were tnacylglycerols with the principal fatty acids 22:l(n- ll),22:l(n-g), 16:0, 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3).

The species show a spectrum of adaptations, but three broad life cycle strategies were defined:Ž. 1 herbivorous in summer, a short reproductive period and winter diapause at depth Ž.Ž.Calanoides acutus and possibly Ctenocalanus citer ; 2 predominantly omnivorousrdetritivorous diet, an extended period of feeding, growth and reproduction and less reliance on diapause at depth Ž Metridia gerlachei, Calanus propinquus, Calanus simillimus, Oithona similis, Microcalanus pygmaeus, and possibly Oncaea curÕata and Oithona frigida.Ž.;3 overwintering and feeding within sea ice as early nauplii or copepodids Ž.Stephos longipes and Paralabidocera antarctica . The large species Rhincalanus gigas appears to be intermediate between strategiesŽ. 1 and Ž. 2 . Contrasting species from groupsŽ. 1 and Ž. 2 , namely C. acutus and O. similis, were selected for more detailed comparison. For C. acutus, maximum Ž.probably food saturated feeding and egg production rates are well below equivalent values for Calanus spp. at lower latitudes. Likewise, summer growth and moulting rates are slower, and the growth season of this herbivore is only 2±4 months. Therefore, both the low summer temperatures and short primary production season seem to dictate a long Ž.;1 year life cycle for C.

While triacylglycerols, the primary storage lipid of terrestrial animals, are found in almost all zooplankton species, wax esters are the dominant storage lipid in many deep-living and polar zooplankton taxa. Phospholipids and diacylglycerol ethers are the unique storage lipids used by polar euphausiids and pteropods, respec- tively. In zooplankton with large stores of wax esters, triacylglycerols are more rapidly turned over and used for short-term energy needs, while wax esters serve as long-term energy deposits. Zooplankton groups found in polar, westerlies, upwelling and coastal biomes are characterized by accumulation of large lipid stores. In contrast, zooplankton from the trades/tropical biomes is mainly composed of omnivorous species with only small lipid reserves. Diapausing copepods, which enter deep water after feeding on phytoplankton during spring/summer blooms or at the end of upwelling periods, are characterized by large oil sacs filled with wax esters. The thermal expansion and com- pressibility of wax esters may allow diapausing copepods and other deep-water zooplankton to be neutrally buoyant in cold deep waters, and they can thus avoid spending energy to remain at these depths.

Discovery samples were 27 obtained using an N70V closing net fished vertically through 3 depth horizons encompassing 28 the top 250 m of the water column, whereas contemporary samples were obtained using a 29 Bongo net fished vertically through 200-0 m. Data from a previous study comparing catch 30 efficiencies of the two nets were used to generate calibration factors which were applied to 31 the N70V abundances. Following further corrections for net depth differences and seasonal 32 biases in sampling frequency, three of the four species, Calanoides acutus, Rhincalanus gigas 33 and Calanus simillimus, were found to be between ~20-55% more abundant in contemporary 34 times than they were 70 years ago.
