PRINSES JULIANA BATAVIASCHE KUNSTKRING BESCHERMHEER : ZIJNE EXCELLENTIE DE GOUVERNEUR-GENERAAL VAN NED.-INDIË Juliana-Tentoonstelling bij gelegenheid van het huwelijk van Hare Koninklijke Hoogheid Prinses Juliana met Zijne Doorluchtige Hoogheid Prins Bernhard zur Lippe-Biesterfeld op 7 Januari 1937. Deze tentoonstelling omvat portretten en figuren, ook in landschap en stadsbeeld, weergegeven in olieverf, als teekening en prent door kunstenaars uit Holland en Indië en uit het buitenland. Zij werd voornamelijk samengesteld uit particulier bezit te Batavia en elders, voorts uit de Landsverzameling Schilderijen en uit het Schilderijen bezit van den Volksraad. Het vroegst gedateerde stuk, een prent van Dürer, gaat terug tot vóór 1495 — op eenige der jongste stukken had de verf ternauwernood tijd te drogen. Hare Majesteit de Koningin heeft de goedheid gehad voor deze tentoonstelling een portret van de Prinses, geschilderd door de Amsterdamsche schilderes Lizzie Ansingh, af te staan. Het Bestuur van den Bataviaschen Kunstkring betuigt hiervoor Hare Majesteit zijn eerbiedigen dank. Groote erkentelijkheid is het Bestuur verschuldigd aan de Regeering van Nederlandsch- Indië, die door het inzenden van eenige belangrijke en schoone portretten uit de Landsver- zameling Schilderijen het mogelijk heeft gemaakt, dat de groep „Indisch werk" met het portret van Jan Pieterszoon Coen teruggebracht kon worden tot de eerste decenniën der 17e eeuw. Het Bestuur rest voorts de aangename taak den Volksraad te danken voor zijn hooggewaardeerde inzending en niet minder de velen, die met groote welwillendheid uit hun particulier bezit voor deze expositie schoone en merkwaardige stukken afstonden. De tentoonstelling wordt gehouden van 28 December 1936 6.30 uur n.m. t/m 5 Januari 1937 des avonds te 8 uur in het Kunstkringgebouw, van Heutszboulevard I, en is geopend van 9 — I en van 5—8 uur Op den openingsavond hebben slechts leden en inzenders toegang ; op de andere dagen ook niet-leden tegen betaling van 25 cents. De opbrengst der entrees zal worden afgedragen aan „Het Roode Kruis". In dezen catalogus is bij de oude stukken de toeschrijving der eigenaars gevolgd.     JIM VAN DER MEER MOHR Gouverneur-generaals van Nederlands-Indië in beeld In dit artikel worden de penningen beschreven die de afgelo- pen eeuwen zijn geproduceerd over de gouverneur-generaals van Nederlands-Indië.     * omslag Dutch Ships in Tropical:DEF 18-08-09 13:30 Pagina 1 dutch ships in tropical waters robert parthesius The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company’ trading – its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships’ movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ignored, smaller vessels. Parthesius’s research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail – and continue its profitable trade – the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained.     Joan Maetsuycker Joan (of Johan) Maetsuycker (Amsterdam, 14 oktober 1606 – Joan Maetsuycker Batavia, 4 januari[1] of 24 januari 1678) was 25 jaar lang, van 1653 tot 1678, gouverneur-generaal voor de Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, een record. Het overzeese rijk bloeide onder Maetsuyker, de enige katholiek onder de gouverneurs, maar hij had ook een grillig en onaangenaam karakter.[1][2] Biografie Maetsuycker kwam uit een katholiek gezin en studeerde rechten in Leuven. Hij liet zich inschrijven als advocaat bij het Hof van Holland en vestigde zich in Amsterdam. In 1636 zeilde hij naar Batavia en trad in dienst als pensionaris van de Raad van Justitie. In 1641 werd hij benoemd als raad-extraordinair en advocaat-fiscaal in de Raad van Indië. Antonie van Diemen droeg hem op alle plakkaten en verordeningen te verzamelen om daaruit de Statuten van Batavia, een wetboek voor Indië, samen te stellen. In 1644 viel hij Goa aan en in 1646 werd hij opnieuw naar Goa gestuurd om tot een wapenstilstand met de Gouverneur-generaal Joan Maetsuycker Portugezen te komen en tot een grensregeling op Ceylon.     Lords of the land, lords sea Lords of the land, lords of the sea 1600-1800 and adaptation in early colonial Timor, Conflict Conflict and adaptation in early colonial Timor, 1600-1800 European traders and soldiers established a foothold on Timor in the course of the seventeenth century, motivated by the quest for the commercially vital sandalwood and the intense competition between the Dutch and the Portuguese. Lords of the land, lords of the sea focuses on two centuries of contacts between the indigenous polities on Timor and the early colonials, and covers the period 1600-1800. In contrast with most previous studies, the book treats Timor as a historical region in its own right, using a wide array of Dutch, Portuguese and other original sources, which are compared with the comprehensive corpus of oral tradition recorded on the island. From this rich material, a lively picture emerges of life and death in early Timorese society, the forms of trade, slavery, warfare, alliances, social life. The investigation demonstrates that the European groups, although having a role as ordering political forces, were only part of the political landscape of Timor. They relied on alliances where the distinction between ally and vassal was moot, and led to frequent conflicts and uprisings. During a slow and complicated process, the often turbulent political conditions involving Europeans, Eurasians, and Hans Hägerdal Timorese polities, paved the way for the later division of Timor into two spheres of roughly equal size. Hans Hägerdal (1960) is a Senior Lecturer in History at the Linnaeus University, Sweden. He has written extensively on East and Southeast Asian history.
