Thatcher Papers: catalogue of material open for research 5. THCR 1: Contents of Margaret Thatcher's personal flat at No.10 This series describes the contents of the filing cabinets kept in MT's personal flat in 10 Downing Street and are items which were of particular interest or importance to her. Many of these papers, therefore, complement or are duplicated in other series. This personal files series was added to after Margaret Thatcher's departure from Downing Street. There are some interesting papers in this class relating to MT's early political career (1949–), but generally comparatively little before she became Prime Minister in 1979. Almost no personal papers (as opposed to office papers) survive from the period 1975–9 when she was Leader of the Opposition. The Papers include material relating to: Conservative Party conferences, the Conservative Leadership elections of 1975, 1989 and 1990, European elections and MT's addresses to the 1922 Committee (THCR 1/1); constituency material relating to Dartford and Finchley (THCR 1/2); MT's personal correspondence (THCR 1/3); defence material, including papers relating to the Falklands War and the Westland affair (THCR 1/4); economic material, including papers relating to Budgets and unemployment (THCR 1/5); education material, including a very limited quantity of MT's papers as Secretary of State for Education and Science, 1970–4 (THCR 1/6); papers relating to MT's UK engagements, including briefing notes on foreign visitors to the UK (THCR 1/7); material relating to the European Union (THCR 1/8); family and personal memorabilia, although much of the material forms an artificial collection (THCR 1/9); material relating to foreign affairs, overseas visits by MT and meetings and summits with world leaders (THCR 1/10); General Election papers (THCR 1/11); home affairs papers, including material relating to broadcasting, the environment, health, housing, the miners' strike of 1984/5, Northern Ireland, science and trade union reform (THCR 1/12); material from advisers outside government, including Alfred Sherman, Lord (Hugh) Thomas of Swynnerton, Professor Alan Walters and Woodrow Wyatt (THCR 1/13); Parliamentary papers, including material relating to Censure debates in the House of Commons and the Cabinet re-shuffles of 1981, 1985 and 1990 (THCR 1/14); policy and planning papers, including material generated by the Prime Minister's Policy Unit (THCR 1/15); collections of press cuttings (THCR 1/16); speech texts and collected speech materials, where other background papers were not attached (THCR 1/17) After 1990 the papers were stored unbound in folder covers or loose in filing holders. These arrived at Churchill Archives Centre placed in removal boxes approximately by year date but in no other order. They have been brought together under broad topic headings in order to make searching easier. The contents of the folders remain mostly unchanged except, where it was quite obvious that a paper or bundle of papers had been misfiled, a minimal amount of replacement was carried out. The bulky folders of personal correspondence were arranged in date order and, as with other over-stuffed files, divided by the archivist into convenient production units.
