GREATEST ASSET •Besides the dedicated full-time front office staff and seasonal staff, which is undoubtedly their greatest asset…In my opinion, the ball park is not only their greatest asset but also their greatest challenge. GREATEST CHALLENGE • The whole stadium experience is year-in and year-out a fan favorite. People come from all over the region to get that old ball park feel. The ticket and food prices make the entertainment value excellent. However, the city of Reading owns the stadium, so the team is handcuffed as to what it can do to improve and expand. Maintenance on a 65 year old stadium has many challenges and limitations. Summary of Project •MATH LESSON #1: SPENDING 5 MILLION DOLLARS • PA ACADEMIC STANDARDS ADDRESSED: CAREER AWARENESS AND PREPARATIO N 13.3.8 D • CONTENT ACADEMIC STANDARDS ADDRESSED: 5.NBT.4 USE PLACE VALUE UNDERSTANDING TO ROUND DECIMALS TO ANY PLACE. • Activity: For the Focus activities, students will need access to the Internet or price listings to complete the activities. I will bookmark useful websites ahead of time, such as those for minor league baseball teams and sporting goods stores. I may need to give estimates for some categories. Before we begin, I will decide how to group students. Although the Focus activities can be completed in a single class period, I will extend them over multiple days, up to 1 week. •MATH LESSON #2: DATA COLLECTION AND GRAPHING OF PLAYERS BATTING AVERAGES • PA ACADEMIC STANDARDS ADDRESSED: CAREER AWARENESS AND PREPARATION 13.1.5 A-D, 13.2.5 A • CONTENT ACADEMIC STANDARDS ADDRESSED: M5.D DETERMINE A FUNCTIONAL RULE FROM A TABLE OR GRAPH AND M5.E DATA ANALYSIS AND PROBABILITY • Activity: In my 5th grade class, we spend significant time in our studies of data collection and graphing. While spending time at the Reading Fightin Phils, one thing I learned is that the Philadelphia Phillies are 80% owners of the Fightin Phils. I was fascinated to learn that this only took place in the last 10 years or so and that the Fightin Phils were privately owned before that. For this activity, student groups will be assigned a Fightin Phils player and collect data on their batting average in a one month period. To provide a hook, I will talk about my experience with the Fightin Phils. I will show data collection tools and graphs. From the website I will show students how to find batting statistics from box scores. Students will then be tasked with collecting data for the player that their group is assigned..
