These different, but very valuable research methods helped me get closer to defining why racial segregation occurs in sports. I mainly focused on the racial segregation that occurs amongst Whites and African Americans in U of I sport teams. With the use of these 6 themes I will elaborate on how I found that racial segregation has occurred in sports with the information provided by my research reports. These 6 themes are: comfort zone/socialization, class and opportunity, background history, U of I sports before and after, stereotypes- positions, and lastly racial segregation, which will bring us to a conclusion as to why racial segregation occurs within U of I sports.

Kachur A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2017 Committee: Jolie Sheffer, Advisor Vibha Bhalla © 2017 Curtis Kachur All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jolie Sheffer, Advisor Starting in the late 1880s, the U.S. government decided that it was time to solve the on- going “Indian problem.” The government was concerned about how Indians were not adapting into mainstream society, were remaining on isolated reservations, and continued practicing their non-modern and uncivilized tribal cultures. Since Indians on reservations stood by the side of the road while modernity and capitalism passed them by, the U.S. government devised strategies to enforce complete assimilation by opening boarding schools, enforcing compulsory attendance laws, and taking young children away from their families. The key to changing the next generation of Indians was to target the domestic home and Pratt believed all Indian children needed to become white was an education. The early boarding school era from 1879 to 1930 banned Indian children from speaking their tribal languages, practicing their tribal cultures, and had strict militarized rules that taught them to value white modernity. However, not all Indian children accepted assimilation and many students began to rebel against the school’s authority by finding private moments away from adult supervision.     Completed in 1951, FirstEnergy Stadium is now the oldest home in the Eastern League. It assumed that distinction after Toronto's Double-A affiliate departed from Yale Field (1927) in New Haven, Connecticut, following the 2003 season. The home of the Reading Phillies is 36 years the senior of any other park in the EL. Harrisburg's Commerce Bank Park (formerly RiverSide Stadium), built in 1987, is the league's second oldest park. While the facility has undergone a series of renovations over the years, the original seating bowl, dugouts and exterior brick wall have all remained and continue to provide tangible links to the past. THE EARLY YEARS - In its infancy, Reading's Municipal Memorial Stadium was used for much more than just Minor League Baseball. High school football games, circuses and concerts changed the scenery at the stadium several times per year. Despite the variety of events, the physical makeup of the ballpark changed little from 1951 until the mid-1980s. On March 28, 1945, Reading City Council voted unanimously to purchase 27 acres of ground known as Cathedral Heights at a cost of $64,491 for the purpose of building a municipal stadium. In 1947 the grading of the land began and by 1949 the initial stages of construction could be seen. With a final price tag of $656,674, the stadium was completed on April 15, 1951. Named in honor of the service men and women who gave their lives for our country, Reading Municipal Memorial Stadium was dedicated on July 15 that same year. While it was also slated to be used for various civic and athletic events, the stadium needed to lure a professional sports organization to ensure financial success.

McCarthy THE UNPROGRESSIVE CITY: PHILADELPHIA AND URBAN STEREOTYPES AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY At the turn of the century Philadelphia was a booming manufactur- ing city, an important port, and a major publishing and financial center. It was also a leader in medical research and training, and in higher education in general, the University of Pennsylvania in particu- lar at that time widely respected for new programs begun under the dynamic leadership of provost William Pepper.' But up-to-date aspects of Philadelphia were largely ignored by visiting writers. To them, its rivals New York and Chicago were modern cities, not Philadelphia. The best known of these negative assessments is Lincoln Steffen's article in McClure's (later published in The Shame of the Cities) in which he coined the famous "corrupt and contented" phrase that has almost become the exclusive property of Philadelphia, so far as word associa- tion is concerned. For Steffens, Philadelphia was a city of plump, old-fashioned Quakers with the mein, if not the morals, of founder William Penn. Why Philadelphia was viewed as a quaint anachronism out of the mainstream of modern America? And why did writers view New York and Chicago so differently when Philadelphia in many respects was modern too? These are important questions because the stereotypes that evolved by the turn of the century were quite influential, not only in terms of urban rivalries but in how residents perceived themselves, it being fair to say that in many ways the prestige of where we live influences our own personal self-esteem.2 Stereotypes of any kind of course are notoriously subjective and difficult to analyze, but let us make an attempt at least to see how the Philadelphia stereotype evolved.
