If I Gave Two Fucks About Streaming Numbers, Would Have Put Lemonade up on Spotify Sandy Guberti-Ng / August 8, 2018 The Billboard Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs, published weekly by Billboard magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States. Over the last decades, the music industry has faced many technological disruptions that change the way we listen and consume music. What is a Album-Equivalent Unit? As we moved from purchasing whole albums, to single digital tracks, and now, streaming, the album-equiva- lent unit emerged as a measurement unit in the music industry to measure the success of an artist or an album. The album-equivalent unit was introduced in the mid-2010s as an answer to the drop of album sales in the 21st century. Jason Aldean’s medley was fantastic. I loved the Milestone Awards. • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

  • Dave Cobb Episode Transcript
VOICES IN THE HALL DAVE COBB EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here. PETER COOPER It’s Voices in the Hall, with Dave Cobb. “4th of July” - Shooter Jennings (Black Magick / Universal South) PETER COOPER “Fourth of July,” from Shooter Jennings.

In Tune Activity Plans – Volume 18, Issue 6 Cover Story: Chris Stapleton Is Starting Over National Standards: 7-8, 11 Until 2015, Chris Stapleton was known as a songwriter. As those around him finally convinced to begin performing, he appeared in a few venues and finally on a TV awards show, supported by other artists and a band that included his wife. Then came his debut album, and it was so successful that at 37 years old, he vaulted to the top of the country music world. Now, with his fourth album, he’s crossing over to the mainstream and finding worldwide acclaim. Part of the reason is his unique style of “country.” Prepare Have students listen to some of Stapleton’s music, particularly the new song “Cold” which leads the In Tune Listening List for March. Does this sound like a country song? What does it sound like, and why? Key points in the article: • Late in life (for a musical star) a songwriter becomes a performer and recording artist • His music infuses multiple styles • He is a family man who eschews the celebrity lifestyle • He isn’t dependent on the songwriter community in Nashville for material, as he writes his own Begin Review vocabulary words from the article: • ENGINEERING: the use of scientific principles to design and build machines, structures, and other items, including bridges, tunnels, roads, vehicles, and buildings. • MUSIC ROW: street in Nashville, Tennessee where many record labels, publishing companies and other music industry offices are located. • INFLECTION: the modulation of tone or pitch in the voice.
