Aerospace Industry in South Holland Joins Forces to Capitalize on Growth Kenmerk PRESS RELEASE IQ201 Aerospace industry in South Holland joins forces 6 - to capitalize on growth opportunities PRESSRELEASE The Hague, June 2, 2016 - Wednesday, June 1, during the Innovation Award 1 / Drechtsteden event in Dordrecht, The Netherlands, Vice President of Fokker 3 Technologies Steven Soederhuizen presented a copy of Flying High, Aero-Space Agenda Zuid-Holland 2016-2025, to Jaap Smit, the Commissioner of the King. The Agenda is an initiative of the aerospace industry in the province of South Holland and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) to strengthen their unique worldwide combination of expertise in the fields of aircraft, drones, satellites and airports, and to bring them more in line with the European Clean Sky 2 programme. During the event, the Province of Zuid-Holland signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Joint Undertaking Clean Sky, which is the public private partnership between the European Commission and the European aeronautics industry. Aero-Space Agenda Auteur The Aero-Space Agenda Zuid-Holland is an initiative of the regional aerospace industry and the TU Delft. Its purpose is to demonstrate that South Holland has an J.K. exceptional combination of knowledge and expertise in the fields of design and construction of aircraft, UAVs (drones) and satellites, and the development of airports, and that this expertise is recognized worldwide. By collaborating more intensively in joint programmes, global growth opportunities in these sectors can be realized. Projections show that there are many opportunities in the growing sectors of aviation, airport expansion, and the construction of satellites and drones, and that the South Holland industry is strongly represented in these sectors. Investing in aerospace necessary A public-private investment totalling €75 million for the development and production of new, sustainable materials, structures and systems is needed over the coming years to gain maximum benefit from growth opportunities. These investments will come mainly from industry and research institutions, but public investments will also be needed. In order to compete in the global market, it is important to develop new, innovative products, but this is not sufficient. South Holland aerospace companies are focusing on investing in smart industry solutions, to increase production quality and speed, and thereby reduce costs. Strengthening the South Holland aerospace ecosystem The implementation of the Agenda contributes to the further strengthening of the international position of the South Holland aerospace ecosystem. The Province is aiming to become the driving force for the aerospace industry in The Netherlands, which leads to more business and jobs. The innovations contribute to cleaner and quieter aircraft, less expensive launch structures, new satellites, and smarter drones. IQ201 6 - Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation PRESSRELEASE The signed MoU increases the probability that the aeronautics sector can obtain EU funding through the Clean Sky 2 Programme. This programme is carried out as part of the Horizon 2020 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The programme is aimed at developing new technologies that will strengthen the global 2 / 3 competitiveness and sustainability of the European aeronautics industry. It is the largest aeronautical research programme established at the European level. Planning the Horticultural Sector Managing Greenhouse Sprawl in the Netherlands Korthals Altes, W.K., Van Rij, E. (2013) Planning the horticultural sector: Managing greenhouse sprawl in the Netherlands, Land Use Policy, 31, 486-497 Abstract Greenhouses are a typical example of peri-urban land-use, a phenomenon that many planning systems find difficult to address as it mixes agricultural identity with urban appearance. Despite its urban appearance, greenhouse development often manages to evade urban containment policies. But a ban on greenhouse development might well result in under-utilisation of the economic value of the sector and its potential for sustainability. Specific knowledge of the urban and rural character of greenhouses is essential for the implementation of planning strategies. This paper analyses Dutch planning policies for greenhouses. It concludes with a discussion of how insights from greenhouse planning can be applied in other contexts involving peri-urban areas. Keywords: greenhouses; horticulture; land-use planning; the Netherlands; peri-urban land-use 1 Introduction The important role played by the urban-rural dichotomy in planning practice is a complicating factor in planning strategies for peri-urban areas, often conceptualised as border areas (the rural-urban fringe) or as an intermediate zone between city and countryside (the rural-urban transition zone) (Simon, 2008). However, “[t]he rural-urban fringe has a special, and not simply a transitional, land-use pattern that distinguishes it from more distant countryside and more urbanised space.” (Gallent and Shaw, 2007, 621) Planning policies tend to overlook this specific peri-environment, focusing rather on the black-and-white difference between urban and rural while disregarding developments in the shadow of cities (Hornis and Van Eck, 2008).

More than half of the world’s population now lives in towns and cities, and by 2030 this number will swell to about 5 billion. Much of this urbanization will unfold in Africa and Asia, bringing huge social, economic, and environmental transformations. Intensifying urbanization is not only a phenomenon of developing countries but also of developed countries. For example, many of the larger cities in the Benelux region (like Brussels, Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam) are experiencing growth rates at or above 2% on annual basis.

This master thesis is the final assignment for the master-track Management in the Built Environment at the Delft University of Technology. The choosing of the topic of this thesis can be traced back to an episode of “De slag om Nederland” (VPRO 2012). This documentary showed the problematic situation of the Dutch office market. However, solutions for this problem where hardly proposed. With this thesis I will go into more detail on the origin of the current Dutch office vacancy and how adaptive reuse can serve as a possible solution. By doing so, I want to expand my knowledge on adaptive reuse and its value in a social and economic way.

  • The Cheese Markets of the Netherlands by Lee Foster
The Cheese Markets of the Netherlands by Lee Foster Few experiences satisfy the person who savors food and drink more than a journey to the source, the place where a favorite wine, cheese, or fruit is produced. The encounter imparts a knowledge of terrain and an appreciation of techniques used to make the prized food or drink. No book can teach this experience; no number of trips to the local delicatessen or bottle shop can equal it. For the appreciator of cheese, Dutch cheese is one of the gustatory glories of the Netherlands. The place to start is a good cheese store in Amsterdam. Beyond Amsterdam, you can visit the cheese markets at Alkmaar and at Gouda. You can also visit a cheese-making farm, Clara Maria, near Amsterdam. Details can be easily arranged by the Netherlands Board of Tourism office, www.holland.com. Cheese Shops in Amsterdam Cheese shops in Amsterdam, such as Abraham Kef’s, 192 Marninxstraat, are the places to make your first encounter with Dutch cheeses. At Kef’s you can make a tasting ceremony of cheese and wine. First, try a slice of Gouda, which is 60 percent of all the cheese produced in the Netherlands. Half of this Gouda is exported, making the Dutch one of the world’s largest exporters of cheese. Ask for a piece of Young Gouda, about three months old, which is imported to the U.S. labeled Young or Mild Gouda. Most Goudas are whole milk cheeses with a fat content of 48 percent. The Young Gouda has a creamy, buttery taste.
