Reflections for Term 1 of 2016

Dear Parents, Old Greys and Friends of The Grey We have experienced an ‘action-packed’ start to 2016! Thanks to so many of you for your fantastic support and positive participation in various ways. May all we do continue to be in the best interests of The Grey and those we serve.

STAFFING

We were delighted to welcome a number of new staff members to The Grey this year. Mr Neil Strydom (OG: Class of 2012), Mr Voughan Casling (OG: Class of 2010) and Ms Natasha Veltman - join us as ‘Learnership Students’ in 2016, together with ‘interns’ Mr Zaine Marx (OG: Class of 2011) and Mr Matthew

Reflections from the Rector’s Desk 2016-02-26 Page 3 Oosthuizen (OG: Class of 2011) who have joined the staff of Meriway as Junior Housemasters. Mr Ian Clifford (OG: Class of 2003) has returned to his Old School to join our Physical Sciences Department. Mr Clifford has a BSc with Chemistry and Physics as majors – he then went on to Cum his Honours in Chemistry. He has also completed his PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education). He was awarded the James Moir medal for top Chemistry graduate at UNISA in 2011. He has taught at both Alexander Road and Wynberg Boys’ High and comes to us highly recommended. Mr Brian Jacobs has also re-joined our team of educators. He is an Old Jeppe Boy. He studied at Wits and has a BA Hons and BEd (English and History). He commenced his teaching in Johannesburg before joining Grey in 2008. Mr Jacobs spent a few years at Pearson sharpening his skills, before expressing interest in returning to The Grey. He has joined our English Department. We know the quality of this man and welcome him warmly and sincerely. Another familiar face to many of us is that of Mrs Lynette Swart – she has a BA, majoring in Afrikaans, Isi Xhosa and HMS - a highly experienced educator who will be serving the Afrikaans Department. She is an Old Framesby girl, Two Oceans and Comrades runner and achieved Colours for EP Biathlon. She is also a Senior Marker of Matric Afrikaans. Mrs Swart taught with us from 2006 to 2009 before returning to her old school, Framesby, for a teaching stint – we are naturally very pleased that she applied to return to us. For the first time, we have appointed a full-time registered Counselling Psychologist and we recently welcomed Mr Hendrik Uys into this position. He is an old Pearsonite who studied his BPsych, Honours and PGCE at the NMMU before going on to complete his Masters in Counselling Psychology. He has been a practising, full-time counsellor with ‘Klopper and Uys’ psychologists. We know that this gentleman is going to be a great asset to the staff and young men of The Grey. Mr Allan Miles, Old Selbornian, studied at Rhodes where he obtained a B Soc Science degree. He then obtained his PGCE through UNISA. He has been involved in teaching for 13 years – EMS, Business Studies and Accounting – and has served as a teacher at Selborne, St Andrew’s and, more recently, at Graeme – also as the Senior Housemaster of their boarding establishment. Teaching, like coaching, is a passion of his. He has an impressive Rugby background and will be working closely with our coaching staff while heading up Rugby at The Grey. We also welcome Mr Steyn van Eeden – identical twin to Mr Beän van Eeden who is currently on our staff. He was schooled at ‘Die Brandwag’ and qualified with a BEd (Hons) from the NMMU. He enjoyed a Prac Year with us in 2012, before Reflections from the Rector’s Desk Page 4 2016-02-26 accepting a post at Otto. His subjects are: Business Studies, Maths and Technology. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Seema Naidoo who has joined our team in the Finance Department. Mrs Michele Clarke recently joined our ‘team’ in the School Shop and commenced her duties on Monday 15 February. Mrs Wendy Beaufort is now also ‘on board’ in a full time capacity – she will be heading up our marketing division. Mrs Beaufort worked in corporate marketing for 22 years. She is a former Benson & Hedges Area Sales Manager in the good old days of B&H – this before tobacco legislation – and a former National Marketing Manager for Spec-Savers , where she oversaw the marketing for 200 stores nationally. She was involved in the first 3 Iron-Man events with the Naming Rights Sponsor and for the last 10 years, she has been the owner of the ‘Kids Connection’ concept which saw her win the Businesswoman of the Year Award in 2010 - this was featured on Top Billing. In 2011 she was nominated for the Shoprite/Checkers SABC 2 Woman of the Year as well as receiving a nomination in 2012 for the Africa SMME award which is presented to the most successful SMME on the African Continent. Mrs Beaufort has already been involved in a number of projects at The Grey.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

We are pleased to note that the Academic Support classes, which incorporate, Accounting, Afrikaans, English, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and CAT/IT, continue to be of great benefit to our Grey men. In the elective (“choice”) subjects, Academic Support is available to the senior boys by appointment only. In the Languages, we have tried to make support available to all grades. We have a staff team of at least eight teachers, who patiently work with their charges over four afternoons per week every week. In Mathematics, we have weekly support classes for our ‘accelerated programme’ Grade 9s and Grade 10s, for our weakest Grade 9s and Grade 8s and for the Grade 12s. Other support is available by appointment only. Our biggest challenge continues to be to find times that suit the majority of boys most of the time, and not to clash with other support classes for that grade. Obviously, this is still a work in progress and we continue to learn as we go along. We are unable to cater to every individual’s sporting and cultural commitments, but we have tried to be as accommodating as possible. There is no charge for this service.

Reflections from the Rector’s Desk 2016-02-26 Page 5 Our target groups are the following: 1. Boys who are genuinely weak in the subject and have to pass the subject. We do NOT cater for those boys with disciplinary problems. 2. Boys who have missed school due to illness or sports tours. These pupils will not necessarily attend every week, but will attend fairly regularly through their busy sports season. 3. Those who have specific areas of weakness within the subject that need to be remediated, or who are just underperforming. These boys will also come to support classes for a specified time period or for specific problems. 4. ‘Accelerated programme’ Mathematics pupils who require extra support with the heavier work load. The way it works is that subject teachers identify boys in their classes who fit into any one of the above-mentioned categories and forward their names to the staff member in charge of the relevant support class. In some instances, a letter of notification is sent home to the parents so that they are aware that their son is in need of help and that help can be and is being provided. At this point, no boy is admitted to a support class without the knowledge of his subject teacher. Any boy who requests attendance must do so through the subject teacher. This process helps us to track discipline/homework problems, since these classes are never to be used as a catch-up session or homework session for lazy boys or boys who are uncooperative in class. We are delighted to see that many boys are responding positively to the concept of support classes and that they are realising that these classes are not a punishment, but rather a very real help to those who are prepared to admit that they need it! We continue to see some very positive results in attitude and performance of boys who attend classes regularly. What is perhaps most gratifying is to see how many of the Grade 8 boys from 2013/14/15 who attended Mathematics and/or English support classes then are now coping, perhaps even flourishing, in Grades 11 and 12. Our Grade 8 support classes generally make a slower start, since we need to assess the boys and get to know them before recommending support. The CAPS curriculum also starts the year with revision of primary school work, which means that support is not really required immediately. Our aim is to cater for as many Grey men as possible and to reach them at a level which will assist them to improve and, where applicable, to excel. If we get this right, The Grey will continue to stand out as an academic institution, since our weaker students should perform at a level significantly higher than that of weak students at any other school, while our strongest Mathematics students should

Reflections from the Rector’s Desk Page 6 2016-02-26 achieve unprecedented results when they matriculate in 2018 and beyond! Sincere thanks to Mrs Linda Carr, co-ordinator of this worthy programme, together with willing staff members – all to the benefit and progression of our Grey Men.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Because of two public holidays, Wednesday 27 April and Monday 2 May, we have applied to the Department of Education to close school on Thursday 28 April and Friday 29 April in order to assist our ‘Boda’ parents who would otherwise have double costs for transport for the 2 holidays. Please note: These two days will be made up by: (a) our opening Term 2 on Monday 4 April instead of Tuesday 5 April and (b) on the last day of Term 2 we will have a full day instead of closing early as we usually do. This implies that ‘Bodas’ will be allowed home only after 14:00 on that day, Friday 24 June. Please make your arrangements according to these dates and not those on the calendar.

‘BODAS’

We have a very healthy intake of Boarders this year, including over 30 happy ‘New-Pots’ who have joined the ranks! They arrived on Monday 11 January for their orientation programme. New parents and their sons were all welcomed in the Hostel Dining Room at 09:30 on the same day where they were addressed by the Rector, Chairman of Hostel Council, Mr Vlam Michau, and Senior Housemaster, Mr Gerhard Hills.

GRADE 8 CAMP – WEDNESDAY 13 JANUARY – FRIDAY 15 JANUARY

Our Grade 8’s were transported to van Staden’s River Mouth for their annual camp and all 184 returned safely and intact at midday on Friday 15th. Many thanks to Grade Head, Mr Andrewe Hayidakis, for his arrangements, Pastoral Head, Mr Hendrik Uys, and all Staff and Prefects for accompanying the ‘troops’. Mrs Sue Atherton was, once again, at her best in providing for the ‘inner man’! Our Prefects are to be congratulated on the manner in which they managed our new intake. Our Grade 8’s of 2016 are a fine group of youngsters and we look forward to following their progress as they ‘climb the ladder of success’!

OLD GREYS – STAFF WELCOMING

We are most grateful to Old Grey President, Mr Dave Hurr, Executive Chairman, Mr Ian Pringle, and members of the Old Grey Exco for hosting this gathering on Monday 18 January – always a great opportunity for good fellowship as we introduce new members of staff to our Grey Junior colleagues. We continue to value the excellent relationship that exists between our schools. Reflections from the Rector’s Desk 2016-02-26 Page 7 PARENT- PREFECT DINNER

A most enjoyable evening was held on Thursday 21 January in the Rectory Garden together with our newly-appointed Prefects and their parents. It was on this occasion that we reaffirmed our support for our Leadership Team as they approach the challenges which lie ahead.

NEW PARENTS SOCIAL AND WELCOMING

This gathering of New Parents to The Grey took place at 17:30 on Thursday 28 January in the de Waal Hall and Memorial Quad – thanks to so many of you for attending. We look forward to a healthy, enjoyable and positive partnership for the next 5 years. I enjoyed the excellent atmosphere, camaraderie and friendship which was evident on that evening.

OPEN EVENINGS

Prospective parents and their boys were provided with the opportunity of visiting our School on the evenings of Tuesday 9 February to Thursday 11 February – I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of meeting so many great families. Thank you for considering Grey High School as your No 1 choice for the furtherance of your son’s education! A fantastic ‘vibe’ was especially evident on the Thursday evening when our Grey Junior parents attended their ‘Open Evening’!

MATRIC PARENTS’ INFORMATION MEETING

This gathering of Matric Parents will take place at 17:30 on Monday 29 February in the de Waal Hall. Thank you all for your continued support – may this be a fantastic year for our Matrics together with you, their good parents!

NEW PAVILION – GREY JUNIOR

We were delighted to attend the official opening of the brand new Lindsay Pearson Pavilion on Wednesday 17 February. Congratulations to our Junior School Board of Governors and to all concerned, past and present, for making this project a reality – a real asset to the Grey campus.

AFRIKAANSWEEK

INTRA-MURALS

 Film Club Mr Marius Roodt, Chief of Operations at the Port Elizabeth branch of AFDA, kicked off the start of a new club at Grey this term, by presenting a lecture on Sound and Sound Editing. Boys were able to pick up expert technical tips from a professional, as well as sample the different types of microphones. Their project for the term is to shoot and edit their own music video.

 Grey’s Preservation Society A guest speaker from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is scheduled for 26 February. He will be speaking to members about sustainable resources and “permaculture” amongst other things. The club has also planned an outing to assist The Animal Welfare. Reflections from the Rector’s Desk 2016-02-26 Page 9

 From the Library The new Grade 8’s are “actively” busy in preparing new books, for example: covering, labelling, barcoding and reinforcing the books. There are several new authors’ books available in the library, including Will Hill, Tess Gerritsen, Stuart Macbride, Rick Yancey and Lois Lowrey.

 President’s Award On 17 February, the President’s Award Society had a meeting which was hosted by Ms Phakama Nyakaza, Project Co-ordinator of President’s Award in the . The purpose of the meeting was mainly to explain the President’s Award programme to newcomers and to answer questions current participants might have. As enrolment fees are going up at the beginning of March, prospective participants were encouraged to enrol as soon as possible.

 Quiz Club So far the club has attended one Quiz League fixture hosted by Alex and Collegiate. Grey came 4th in Collegiate’s round and 3rd in Alex’s round. League fixtures happen every 2nd Tuesday.

 SCA The SCA started the year with a fun afternoon to welcome our new Grade 8 members. We played a bit of rugby, had a fast and furious photo chase around campus and then ended off with a worship session in the restaurant – and made a bit of healthy spiritual noise! Our numbers seem to have grown enormously this year and we are now bursting out of the restaurant at our morning sessions. What a wonderful predicament for our school.

We are currently building up to the bi-ennial Laps for Hope 24-hour relay marathon, which takes place on 11 and 12 March. We already have 11 teams signed up, and a few more promising to join us. This is a fantastic witness to the generosity of our Grey men when it comes to serving the community at large. Please support your sons in whatever way you can over the 24-hours as they run for Jesus.

 The Surfing Club The club enjoyed an outing to Pollock Beach where new boys could demonstrate and staff could gauge the boys’ surfing ability. Mr Lyell Watson coached the more experienced boys. The club has also arranged for boys to attend a “Learn to Surf School” on Fridays, run by the South African Coach, Mr Ettienne Venter. Reflections from the Rector’s Desk Page 10 2016-02-26

SPORT AND ACHIEVEMENTS

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS AND

Our Inter-house Athletics meeting was held at the Varsity track on Tuesday 19 January. The ‘Bodas’ were, once again, in fine form, and emerged as convincing winners! Congratulations to Mr Louis du Plessis for his organisation and to all staff and back-up teams for their assistance. Our Swimming Gala was held at the Newton Park Pool on Monday 8 February. Our EP Swimming Officials were, once again, superb in the professional manner in which the gala was handled. Reflections from the Rector’s Desk 2016-02-26 Page 15 GOLF

The Golfers have had a very busy and successful term so far. Grey High is fielding 5 league teams that play in the league every Monday. The First Team managed to qualify to play in the Regional Final that will determine the Regional and League winners for 2016. Andrew Jeffrey won the best individual player in the school league for a second year in a row.

Grey also played against Paul Roos as part of the summer Derby fixtures and beat them convincingly by 10 matches to two. The Grey golfers will have their Annual Golf Camp at Eerste Rivier and it promises to be a great weekend. They will travel to Cradock this weekend to defend their title in the Cradock Invitational. We wish our golfers all the best for the important two weeks that lie ahead.

ROWING

The term started for rowers on 4 January as they packed the trailers and vehicles for the Annual Training Camp at Port Alfred. We are pleased with their progress as we plan for the trip to SA Schools’ Championships on 4 – 6 March. The rest of the club has continued to train hard under the eyes of our team of committed coaches and masters. The 1st regatta was the EC Sprint Regatta at Settlers’ Dam near Grahamstown. Grey managed a third place out of 8 clubs.

The Grey U14 League Regatta at Redhouse is held mainly for U14 crews, none of which are allowed to enter the big Buffalo Regatta. Our under 14 Grey Boys gained a huge amount of respect as they dominated the majority of the events. The course was 500m and the finishing line was at the Yacht Club where the spectators could cheer on the boys and girls.

The overall points position was won by Grey who raced against St Andrew’s and Selborne. In true synergy the U14 A Octopul came flying down the course to win the final event of the day.

Rock the Boat Regatta: Over the same weekend, the 1st VIII competed at Roodeplaat, Pretoria. The regatta is a set of heads races, where each crew races either 1000 or 2000 meters, depending on the boat class. Our 1st VIII raced the 2km stretch and were ranked 5th out of 123 boats across the field. Unfortunately, a breakdown in the timing system led to the finals being delayed to such an extent that the boys had to miss their race in order to catch their return flight. Their result will remain a mystery to them . . .

Reflections from the Rector’s Desk Page 16 2016-02-26 Buffalo and Selborne Sprint Regattas: We travelled to East London to take part in the prestigious Buffalo and Selborne Sprints Regattas held from Thursday to Saturday. This is the second largest regatta in the country and was the first time since March last year that clubs from all provinces could size each other up and see where they stand. One of the highlights is the Grand Challenge race which boasts a trophy worth more than a million Rand. Buffalo heats are held on Thursday with the finals being raced on Saturday. Most races are raced over 2 km and with a headwind and incoming tide, the going was tough. There are only 6 lanes, so a win or second place means going through to a final. This makes it more difficult to make a final than at SA Champs. 15 Grey boats made it through to finals and achieved good results. Proudly, the 2nd Quad took the win in their race on Saturday. On Friday, the Selborne Sprint regatta over 500 m gives the rowers the chance to race the short distances and the jetties are a flurry of activity as races start every five minutes. Once again, Grey made many finals, this time the 2nd Double racing to a comprehensive victory as well as the 2nd Quad pulling off another medal finish. Igazi Foundation Trophy: Two years ago, Grey Rowing held its first Rowathon, both as a fundraiser for the club, and as a worthwhile community outreach activity. As has been mentioned before, this was the Igazi Foundation which assists children with blood-related disorders and diseases. The 2015 Rowathon raised R15 000 for the Foundation and so has been awarded a trophy in recognition of their outstanding efforts in raising this sum and for increasing the awareness of the good work that the Igazi does. The event did much to highlight the plight of those children suffering from blood related diseases.

2016 FNB Invitational Squash Festival hosted by St Andrew’s, Bloemfontein: 21 of the country’s best squash schools participate in this festival proudly hosted by St Andrew’s School in Bloemfontein and sponsored by First National Bank. The schedule they sent us proved daunting, starting with Pretoria Boys’ High, 9-time winner of ‘Top Schools’ and with a reputation of producing consistently strong players over the years. Grey High won the fixture 5 – 1, including Murray Schepers’s victory over Blain Verhage at No 1!

Next up came the hosts, St Andrew’s, and Grey won this 4 – 2 to round off a Friday in oppressive heat, testing fitness levels to the maximum. Parktown Boys’ High boasted a line-up comprised of a ‘Top 3’ which they assumed would win them the fixture and, on this occasion, it was Murray Keeton whose cool composure dismantled their resolve and won us the fixture 4 – 2. St John’s College has a team ‘3 years in the building’ and yet the Grey team triumphed 5 – 1.

Since Grey participated at ‘Stayers’ last year, we have systematically measured this team against schools over three festivals and Grey High remains undefeated. We rounded off the weekend with a 6 – 0 victory over Menlo Park and our preparations for the most coveted prize in South African Junior Squash are on track. We also took a 2nd Team this year and the experience proved invaluable.

Results summary:  Maritzburg College lost 1 – 5  St Andrews ‘B’ won 5 – 1  Glenwood Boys’ High won 4 – 2  St Dominic’s College won 4 – 2  Grey College lost 0 – 6 This team acquitted themselves well even against the first teams of recognised squash schools and provided an ideal introduction to high school team squash.

WATERPOLO

We have had a very busy start to the Waterpolo season. We have played in and/ or hosted no fewer than eleven tournaments this term. This was above the normal Collegiate, Alexander Road and Grey High Thursday League that sees all our teams participate on a weekly basis.

The season began with Grey High School hosting a Quadrangular event that included Paul Roos, Selborne College and St Andrew’s College. The U14A, U15A and 1st teams played on the Friday evening and Saturday morning. The U14A and U15A teams proved too strong and recorded three fine victories each. The 1st

Reflections from the Rector’s Desk 2016-02-26 Page 19 Team defeated Paul Roos 5 – 3 and drew with Selborne College 5 – 5 before losing to St Andrew’s by 9 goals to 4.

The 1st Team then competed in the ITEC Grey College U19 Tournament and unfortunately narrowly missed out on the play-offs – going down 3 – 4 to Selborne College. The St Andrew’s Polo Day saw no fewer than eleven of our sides compete against Selborne, St Andrew’s, Graeme College and Kingswood College. Our teams excelled and won 90% of their matches.

During the first weekend of February, Grey hosted its third annual U15 Waterpolo Tournament. No fewer than 14 sides competed in this event. We are grateful to our new Waterpolo sponsor – Shamrock Pies – for sponsoring this event. The Grey U15 A Team – coached by Old Grey, Mr Cameron Johnson, and well captained by Ricky King with superb support from Matthew Easton, Stu Grenfell and Jared Potgieter – excelled in winning the final comfortably by 8 goals to 4 to claim the gold medal. Well done, boys! Congratulations to Mr Andrewe Hayidakis for his superb organization, and to all officials, referees and parents who assisted tirelessly behind the scenes.

Our U14A side competed in the Jason Murray Tournament hosted by Selborne College. They powered their way to the final only to be pipped 3 – 4 by a motivated Selborne side. A fine effort from our lads.

The 1st Team then travelled to Selborne College to compete in the Vides U19 Tournament. The team, well led by Joshua van Zyl, ended a creditable 3rd after defeating Northwood College by 9 goals to 2. Philip Weyer-Henderson, Rogan Scheepers and Cullen Betts had a very good tournament. The U15A side travelled to compete in the Port Rex Knockout Tournament and again accounted for both St Andrew’s College and Selborne College in the semi- final and final respectively. The final score of 5-4 was good enough to claim the gold medal. Our 2nd Team travelled to Knysna to compete in the Oakhill Chukka Waterpolo Festival played in the Knysna lagoon. The side, superbly well-led by Richard Rautenbach, put together a polished performance and ended the festival unbeaten. They recorded fine victories over Wynberg (6 – 4), Fish Hoek 1st (5 – 0), Camps Bay 1st (4 – 3), Kingswood 2nd (16 – 1), Graeme College (13 – 1) and Bridgehouse 1st (8 – 2).

Our 1st and 2nd Teams competed in the St Andrew’s College Shield and Plate events respectively. Our 1st Team played some very good polo interspersed with some pretty average play. This was not good enough and, although we defeated a

Reflections from the Rector’s Desk Page 20 2016-02-26 very competitive Durban High School, side we again missed the play-offs for higher honours. Our 2nd team – competing against the second tier 1st Teams played valiantly and ended a creditable 5th after missing out on penalties against the Pearson 1st side.

At the time of writing, the 1st Team will be preparing hard for the prestigious King Edward Festival, which will take place in Johannesburg over the weekend of the 4-5 March 2016. Our congratulations to Travis de Bruin on his selection to the SA U17B Waterpolo side to compete in the CANA Zone 4 Waterpolo Championship in Durban later this month - best wishes! Thank you ALL for your wonderful support and for all that you continue to do for and mean to The Grey.
