Dear Parents, Old Greys and Friends of The Grey

Term 2 has heralded in our winter programme and has been full of activity. While the many public holidays have made juggling the academic and extra-curricular programme challenging at times, our boys have risen to the challenge and really done The Grey proud. Thank you and well done to you, one and all.

The June exams mark the halfway point in the year and act as an important barometer for the rest of the year. While the coming holiday is a welcome one, I encourage your son to set some time aside to take stock and identify those areas where he struggled or excelled this last term.

It is important that he arrives next term with clear goals and plans on how to reinforce strengths and address areas of weakness.

After all, a successful education is an ongoing process and, at Grey, our expectations are high. Excellence does not just happen, it requires sustained work.

STAFFING

After 28 years of loyal service as Bursar to our school, Mr Gavin Longe, is retiring at the end of this month. We wish him and his wife, Megan, well as they settle into their new lifestyle. We welcome Mr Garett Smith as our new Bursar and trust he will soon feel at home as part of the Grey Family.

We also bid farewell to Miss Catherine Wilson, of the English Department, who is moving overseas and we wish her well on her adventure. She will be replaced by Mrs Fiona Wilson, formerly of Trinity House in .

Congratulations to our biokineticist, Mr Francois Holder, who married Diann on 11 May.

MATRICS – MOTORISED TRANSPORT – ‘EXAM SEASON’ At this time of year, with many of our men in Matric obtaining licences for motor vehicles, it is essential, as a caring school, that we highlight the following – all in the best interests of our Grey men:  No other pupil may drive a vehicle to school without the necessary permission and documentation having been obtained from the Rector. A copy of his licence, together with a short letter of approval from parents, will be placed in his personal file. This documentation must be handed to Mr Corbyn Dolley.  No senior may give any other Grey boy a lift to or from school without prior permission and approval. (In the event of an accident there are serious third party implications.)  No senior may drive his vehicle onto the school grounds. Matrics must park their vehicles on the ‘slip-way’ behind the O-classroom block (Wares Road).  Grey men travelling to school on their motorcycles must arrive at school punctually to prevent being locked out at 08:00 in the mornings.  We remind all drivers to adhere to the rules of the road and to drive within the required speed limit.

ACADEMIC MATTERS

COLOURS AWARDS:

Music: Colours: Joshua Augoustatos

Music Performance Accomplishment: Colours: Tristan Ingram, Jonathan Hughes, Rashan Naidoo, Matthew Sinclair, Hagen Weidmann, Brendon Hoffman, Davron Jacobs, Darian Smith, Estiaan Hough, Derek Bakker, Chandler Victor, Joshua Augustatos, Jordan Berrington, Cody Coombe-Davis, Cole Oliver, Mitch Lovemore, Sigqibo Tokwe and Liam Milne.

MID-YEAR REPORTS & PARENTS’ MEETINGS Your son has recently finished the first set of exams for this year. Although this can be a stressful time for the boys (and parents), the experience gained from writing examinations cannot be underestimated. Studying the material, practising examples and working through old exam papers and tests, in addition to learning to manage one’s time under pressure, are all part of the exam-writing exercise. We hope that your son will have gained experience during this examination session, that he will honestly evaluate what he learned, how he learned the work and when he learned it, and make adjustments, where necessary, as we work towards the final examinations in the next few months.

Your son’s academic report will be issued on the last day of this term. Please study this report carefully. Remember that staff members are always available to discuss matters concerning his academic and general progress. To assist in this regard, Parent-Teacher meetings will take place early next term to provide you with the opportunity for such consultations to take place. Two Academic Meetings are scheduled:  Tuesday 16 July will be for the parents of boys with surnames A-M and  Wednesday 17 July will be for the parents of boys with surnames N-Z. Both meetings will start at 17:30. Please make every effort to attend.

GRADE 12 EXAMINATIONS Next term, our Grade 12 class will write a full-scale, externally-set Trial Examination in all subjects – this, according to information received from the Department, is scheduled to start on Wednesday 21 August (tbc). As soon as the final timetable for the Trial Examination is published, this will be given to all matrics.

Matrics should also note that, during the Trial Examination session, they will be writing an externally-set and externally-marked final Life Orientation paper, the results of which will form a component of the final Life Orientation mark.

“Block” ends for almost all Matrics on Monday 16 September. It is felt that the opportunity to sort out exam issues arising from the Trials, in the week of 16-20 September, is not one that should be lost.

This is another extremely important step along the Matric road for our Grade 12s, so it is assumed and expected that they will adopt a sense of urgency towards it and begin their preparation well in advance. The Matric finals commence on Wednesday 23 October 2019 with English HL Paper 1 and end on Wednesday 27 November with Music Papers 1 and 2, although CAT and IT Practicals take place on Wednesday 16/Thursday 17 October respectively.

Term 2 Newsletter 2019 P a g e | 4 of 24

This starting date allows for only one week of lessons in the fourth term for the teaching staff to cover important issues arising from the Trials papers that need attention, and to touch up on any necessary aspects of revision in the various subjects. The Prizegiving and Valedictory Ceremonies are scheduled for Wednesday 9 October, “block” commencing thereafter. Again, it is an expectation that our seniors will roll up their sleeves and treat the first few days of the fourth term with respect – some hard work, even at this late stage, will pay dividends. It really is never too late!

GRADE 11 FINAL EXAMINATIONS The final timetable for Grade 11 examinations is not available yet, but we anticipate that they will run from 23 October to 22 November.

Certain internal assessments and examinations will be conducted around, during and after these dates (i.e. up to and including 22 November).

GRADES 8, 9 & 10 FINAL EXAMINATIONS It is expected that the October/November examination timetable for Grades 8, 9 and 10 will follow a similar pattern as in previous years and be scheduled across a similar time-scale as for Grade 11, ending on 22 November. Certain Grade 9 GET subjects and Grade 10 NSC will be externally set, while all other examinations in these three grades will be internally set, marked and moderated.

PROMOTION & PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS IN GRADES 8 & 9 In order to be promoted from Grade 8 or 9 into the next Grade, candidates need to offer the statutory nine subjects and comply with the promotion requirements in eight of them, provided that the SBA component of the ninth subject has been completed (i.e. one subject can be “failed”).

Furthermore, candidates need to score (a minimum of): 50% in Home Language; 40% in First Additional Language; 40% in Mathematics; 40% in each of any three of the other subjects offered; and 30% in two other subjects. Condonations are not possible. Immigrant learners may be exempted from passing their FAL, but that will count as their ninth (failed) subject – SBA requirements must be met. The ratio between the SBA component and final examination component is 40:60 in Grades 8 and 9.

PASS CRITERIA IN GRADES 10, 11 AND 12 Promotion Requirements in Grades 10 or 11: Candidates must achieve (a minimum of): 40% for English HL; 40% in two other subjects; 30% in three other subjects; a fully moderated portfolio in the seventh subject (should it be failed).

Pass Requirements in Grade 12 (Minimum Requirements): Higher Certificate – 40% for English HL; two other subjects at 40%; three other subjects at 30%; a fully moderated portfolio in the seventh subject (should it be failed).

Diploma – 40% for English HL; three other subjects at 40%; two other subjects at 30%; a fully moderated portfolio in the seventh subject (should it be failed).

Bachelor’s – 40% for English HL; four subjects (other than Life Orientation) at 50%; two other subjects at 30%; a fully moderated portfolio in the seventh subject (should it be failed).

NB: The ratio between the SBA component and final examination component is 25:75 in non-

Term 2 Newsletter 2019 P a g e | 5 of 24 practical subjects in Grades 10-12, except for Life Orientation, where the mark is derived entirely from SBA.

SUBJECT CHANGES

Should a Grade 10, 11 or 12 pupil wish to change a subject, application for permission to do so has to be made through us to the Department of Education. The granting of such permission is not automatic and is subject to the furnishing of certain documents, including a letter of motivation from the parent/guardian, a letter from the Rector and a support programme designed to assist the learner to catch up work missed.

Current regulations state that applications to change a subject close as follows: Grade 12 (of 2019): No further changes.

Grade 11 (of 2019): No further changes this year. If your son is considering a change of subject for Grade 12 in 2020, this change will need to be applied for by 04 December 2019. (N.B. No subject changes at all will be allowed in 2020 for Grade 12 – changes for 2020 have to be applied for in the previous year (2019) soon after the release of Grade 11 results; furthermore, the Department specifically referred to “only in exceptional cases”)

Grade 10 (of 2019) by the start of Term 3. Mrs Kerstin Stoltsz is the contact person with respect to Grade 10 subject change applications.

Also, regarding 2019/2020, certain subjects are fully subscribed and subject changes into them cannot, therefore, be entertained. Note also that a maximum of two subject changes in a year are permitted, except for Grade 12 (one change). Please note that if a boy offers Physical Sciences in Grade 10 or 11 then Mathematics is a compulsory accompanying subject.

IDENTITY DOCUMENTS The registration process for Grades 9-12 is under way. A candidate’s identity number forms an integral part of this procedure. All parents are therefore urged to apply to Home Affairs for their sons’ ID books as soon as the boys become eligible (on turning 16).

The Department has informed us that it is compulsory for Grade 12 pupils to have an identity document in order to register for the Grade 12 exams.

RE-MARKING OF 2018 MATRIC EXAM SCRIPTS

Several changes to our overall Matric 2018 statistics came about as a result of the re-marking (which is carried out upon application by the candidate) of certain of last year’s scripts.

There were 10 new subject distinctions: Caleb Loyson, James Potgieter and Adriaan Bouwer all achieved distinctions for English. Tristan Millar increased his count of distinctions by 2 (Mathematics and Geography) while Luke Butler and Muhammad Ismail (Life Sciences), Cole Flesch and (Mathematical Literacy) and Reece Nielsen (CAT) achieved a distinction in their respective subjects.

This brings the total number of subject distinctions from the class of 2018 to 258. Two boys improved their pass to a Bachelor’s pass as a result of re-marks.

INTRAMURALS

ANGLING CLUB

Grey’s anglers had two successful competitions this term. In a rock and surf clash with Paul Roos Gymnasium, Grey scored 533kg, while Paul Roos bagged only 93kg. In a fly-fishing contest against Queens College, Grey bagged 559pts to Queen’s 254pts. In both meetings the Men in Blue convincingly outclassed their opponents.

BLOOD PEER PROMOTERS

The second Blood Bank for the year took place on Monday 8 April in the De Waal Hall. Thank you to the large number of schoolboys who donated blood on Monday. Grey High was able to exceed the target of 75 set by the SANBS. This is greatly appreciated and donors can be assured that they have made a difference to someone in need. The next Blood Bank will take place on Monday 15 July. Parents and Old Boys are reminded that all are able to donate on the allocated day. All support is welcomed.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The 2nd term was extremely busy for the Community Service members. We were privileged enough to hand over money collected at the Annual Coin Laying to The Ikala Trust. The B-Blessed programme was also presented with school shoes that were donated by the Matric class of 2018. Community Service took part in Aurora’s Annual Tin Collection.

It was an honour to represent both the School and Aurora at various stores around Port Elizabeth. During the term the members collected soap, facecloths and stationery for our on-going Santa- shoebox project.

Thank you to those boys and their parents who are forever contributing to this project in a generous way. We ended the term with a well-supported Mini Bazaar. The Community Service, together with Grey Union, managed to raise funds for various projects supported by both societies.

CULTURE WEEK

Term 2 saw the first Cultural Week take place at Grey this year. All the grades engaged in cultural sport during one period per class group. At break, boys played Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa and Indian music. Food from a variety of cultures was brought to school. The Quiz evening provided a surprise being presented in three languages: Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. A special word of thanks to Hlumelo Mooi who translated the questions into isiXhosa. The Public Speaking winners: Iwan Swart (Juniors) and Thomas Dreyer (Seniors).

The second cook-off took place in June. It was a main course challenge.

Sebastian Hammershmidt emerged as top chef on the night, with Jack Brennan placed 2nd and Nicholas Junger 3rd.

Term 3 holds the third cook-off desert challenge, and the final cook-off. Thank you to Capsicum for partnering with Grey on this project.

DEBATING

It has been a busy term for our debaters who took part in the UTH-PE Debating League and participated in three Derby Day events. Our Junior Team made it through to the Junior Final of the UTH-Debating League. Unfortunately, we lost out to a very strong Woodridge side.

Congratulations to both teams on a successful term. The results were: CS:GO lost 16-3; League of Legends lost 23-12; DOTA won 34-7.

The games were played online from home, however, next year could possibly be the first live fixture when we travel down to Paul Roos.

The 3rd term Esports picks up again where the club will continue to compete in the second leg of the High School Esports League.

GREY MATTER

The first event on the club’s calendar this term was its annual breakfast, held on 15 April in the restaurant. The occasion acts as a formal celebration and reflection of the club’s activities of the past year. It was here where we said farewell to the committee and the rest of the Matric members for their loyal service, and also announced the incoming committee. Congratulations to Nafi Alam (Editor), Daniel Reardon (Deputy Editor), Zach Heynes (Designer Co-Editor), Rohan Naidoo (Design Co-Editor), Aiden Nel (Media & Communications) and Lusanele Nelani (Media & Communications) on their appointments. This is the first committee in memorable history that contains two Design Editors. This has been done in the hope of sharing the load in terms of the incredible amount of work that the position requires.

GREY ‘SNARE’

On 14 March Framesby hosted a Masterchef: Boerekos Competition. Dressed in a Chef’s hat and ‘Grey snare’ aprons, Liam Oberholster, Liam Maree, Dylan Vimpany, Luke Oberholster and Jean Hough cooked up a storm by preparing the most delicious “vetkoek” filled with curry mince. They then prepared the most scrumptious “South African pudding with a twist”.

Our gratitude to Mrs Atherton for this brilliant idea and help! We received the award “Best eye for detail”.

GREY UNION

The second term was another busy term that went by quickly. Grey Union held two big events - these were the Mini Bazaar and the Fizzers For Food Campaign. This year Grey Union and Community service joined forces and planned a mini bazaar. This was a successful event enjoyed by many of the learners and staff. It was a day where hamburgers, boerewors rolls, sweet things, curry roti’s and the old-time favourite, pancakes, were sold.

Thank you to all who supported this event. Watch the space for more events like this. As always, the boys were asked to bring a can of food and in return received a fizzer. Grey Union decided to use some of the profits from previous fundraisers to purchase more cans of food. A total of 450 cans was received. This was donated to the Eastern Province Children’s Home. Thank you to everyone who donated to this cause.

PROGRAMMING CLUB

Programming Club offers members the opportunity to learn more about Information Technology and Software Development. You do not have to be a computer geek or a genius to join as it is open to everyone who takes an interest in the computing and software development environment.

During our weekly meetings, club members made use of the Hour of Code Course on the RoboMind Academy platform to learn basic robot actions, looping, Boolean conditions and problem solving. RoboMind is a simple educational programming environment with its own scripting language that allows beginners to learn the basics of computer science by programming a simulated robot. In addition to introducing common programming techniques, it also aims at offering insights into robotics and artificial intelligence.

QUIZ CLUB

Congratulations to the Grey Quiz boys who were crowned League Champions for the second year in a row! Members were: Nafi Alam, Sachin Naidoo, Rohan Naidoo, Hlumi Mooi, Zach Heynes and Matthew Maartens.

SCA

The focus of the second term for SCA is our annual camp, which traditionally takes place on the weekend immediately after exams have ended. This way, the boys are able to relax and have fun and fellowship, build relationships and create lasting memories. Our camp weekend this year ran from 7 to 9 June and we were fortunate to secure the wonderful venue at Oceanview Forest Resort in Seaview. Our theme was “Endgame” and our focus was on learning to distinguish between what society demands from us and what God wants for us and our future.

Our guest speakers each tackled aspects of the theme, starting on Friday night with Dave McGillivray, who addressed the worldly challenges that our young men face on a daily basis. On Saturday morning, we were privileged to have Pastor Afrika Mhlophe and his family join us for the morning. Afrika is a well-known speaker, author and pastor who travels the country and the world addressing many religious and cultural issues. His address gave us so much to think about regarding our own culture and what actually defines us in the eyes of God. This busy man came out to SCA camp on his birthday, so we were also able to present him with a beautiful birthday cake created by Mrs Sue Atherton, and the boys sang to him as only Grey men can!

On Saturday evening our own Mr Matthew Osborne addressed us on our “Endgame” – Heaven – and the fact that we have so much to look forward to if we “tap into” what God provides for us. We ended the evening with worship, brilliantly led by a team from Fountain Vineyard Church, who brought a whole band out to our campsite.

Once more, Mrs Atherton indulged our every need for food, but a huge thanks must also go to the parents who sent out food and treats for the weekend.

Thanks also to Rev Ken Carr who gave up his time to join us at camp. We were truly spoilt! 64 young Grey men returned home exhausted, but physically and spiritually satisfied after a memorable weekend.

SIGHT AND SOUND

Term 2 always keeps the boys on their toes, with events and matches taking place during the week and every weekend. The juniors had a chance to shadow the more experienced boys and learn the skills needed to perform in a media and social media team.

The club was led by Senior Committee Members: Mitch Lovemore, Glynn Rudman and Justin Dickie. Thank you for your commitment and hard work.

A number of junior members have also excelled this term, volunteering themselves up on countless occasions to do service. Special mention must be made of Ndaba Mandaba, Zuks Ngxaki and Caden Miller. Thank you to Canon for sponsoring our photographic equipment.

CROSS-COUNTRY

On the running front, our Cross-Country boys have had an outstanding term with epic victories so far both locally and against various new and old school rivals added to the derby calendar.

At present Grey are well ahead of all other schools in the local Metro schools’ league. Our athletes have raced eleven times this term, four of which have been our very successful derby races. Our Grey men enjoyed excellent wins against St Andrew’s, Wynberg and Queen’s. With squad morale and fitness being high, we look forward to entering the third term on the right ‘foot’.

Cody-Coombe Davis (Captain) and Estiaan Hough have been a bulwark of our senior team along with Sachin Naidoo (Vice-captain) and Bryn Dugmore leading the way. Matthew van Coller and Franci de Villiers from our junior section have been paving the way for a strong team selection in the races to come.

We would like to extend our congratulations to our professional coach, Keegan Cooke (Old Grey of 2015 vintage), who again represented South Africa at the International Triathlon Union African Championships in Mauritius.

Sachin Naidoo was to represent the Nelson Mandela Bay Triathlon Team at the SA Duathlon Championships in Cape Town on the 29 June. We wish him well.

GOLF

The first three teams, consisting of six players each, played our first derby fixture of the season against Paul Roos at Humewood links. The Grey teams played exceptional golf to dominate our strong Western Cape opposition, winning 5-1.

The Grey 1st and 2nd Teams played and dominated Wynberg at Clovelly in the second derby weekend of the term. The Grey 1st and 2nd Teams won both their games against Queen’s College on Reunion Weekend and St Andrew’s College (5-1) at the Belmont GC in Grahamstown. The golfers are representing The Grey at the annual Cape Schools’ Week in St Francis Bay during the June holiday.

FARMERS’ MARKET

Mr Vlam Michau, Chairman of our Hostel Council, and “Boda” Parents are hard at work preparing for our 9th Farmers’ Market which, this year, will be held on Friday and Saturday, 2 and 3 August. This will run in conjunction with our Selborne College Derby Weekend. A sincere thanks must go to members of the Hostel Council – our Chairman, Messrs Rufus Dreyer, Andrew Masterson, Ollie Stratford, Richard Bennett, Gerhard Hills (Senior Housemaster), Danny Daniel (Estate Manager), and Mesdames Tracey Greeff, Linda de Villiers, Nicola Reardon and Elga Heydenreich (Secretary), for the fantastic work they all do in the best interest of our ‘Bodas”.

Thank you to all of you for your anticipated support of this exciting venture – always something to behold. Please join us for a special time with friends and family for the event of the year! There will be delicious potjiekos, music, the very famous JUNGLE JUICE, lots of fruit, veggies, “anything that goes” and meat stalls. The programme of events is as follows:

FRIDAY, 2 AUGUST: 09:00 – 15:00 Sales; 10:00 – 11:00 Grey Band; 18:00 – 24:00 Potjiekos Evening; 20:30 Hostel Boys’ Performance; 21:00 Auction

SATURDAY, 3 AUGUST: 08:00 – 14:00 Sales

Potjiekos tickets @ R100pp will be available from Mrs Leonie Westerdale on 041 374 3300 or [email protected] - only 300 tickets are available.

The money that is raised at the Farmers’ Market is for the sole purpose of improving the living conditions of our Bodas. It is to make the “home away from home” for our boys, a reality. Our major project this year is the upgrading of our bathrooms - we have completed one bathroom, and are busy with the second one and they are looking fantastic.

Please contact Vlam or Marietjie Michau (0829029388), for any further information. We look forward to seeing you all support our market.

SCHOOL SHOP

The School Shop will close on Friday 14 June at 12:00 and re-open Tuesday 09 July at 09:30.

OLD GREYS’ REPORT

It was a pleasure to welcome our valued Old Greys from near and far back to The Grey Campus. Reunion Week requires immense planning and we are most grateful to the schools, who continue to assist us wherever possible, to make this a memorable occasion for one and all.

The Reunion Dinner was once again held in the Memorial Quadrangle. Thanks must be paid to Mr Kimon Augoustatos ('87) and his wife Jacqui, who transformed this space into a tented dinner venue.

To enter 'Neath the Tower' is a sentimental return to the heart of The Grey. The Grey Junior Band, under the direction of Mr David Scarr ('79), kicked off the proceedings. This year the Junior Band, along with the boarders, performed the School Song and they must be applauded on a sterling job. The Master of Ceremonies, Dr Darren Green ('95), was an engaging and professional host. Darren sits on the Western Cape OG Committee and it is wonderful to see our branches working in close unison. A highlight of the evening was the Rector calling upon Mr Ronnie Kaplan to ring the Hope Bell. Ronnie ('49), who was celebrating his 70th Reunion, was the oldest Old Grey in attendance. We could not conclude this article without thanking the Pitsiladi Family of Prestons Liquors who continue to assist and support the bar set-up.

The Reunion is no doubt a highlight in our calendar, and we thank each and every attendee for joining us.

THE GREY FOUNDATION MEMORIAL LECTURE Guest Speaker, Mike Abel, (’84) presented his lecture on the topic ‘Problems are critical to Purpose’. The guests enjoyed a well-executed and thought-provoking speech. Mike, Founder & Chief Executive of M&C SAATCHI ABEL GROUP, has been recognized as one of Africa's leading advertising and communications specialists.

OLD GREY HAPPY HOUR IN THE QUAD This was the second running of this event and has proved to be a crowd favourite. The Happy Hour which takes place after the 1st XV game and is open to all friends of The Grey. Thank you to our loyal supporter and sponsor Tavcor Commercial, for assisting in making this event possible.

Photos: Old Grey Staff had the opportunity to ring the Hope Bell – our oldest member being Gavin Longe (1971). They took a group photo wearing their favourite school outfit!
