Term 1 #2 25 January 2019 NewsletterCollege St Andrew’s College To the Andrean Community It is not often that one gets to be quoted, and less often still that one is able to utter quoteworthy words before the school year has actually formally started, yet Guy Rushmere, in welcoming our Newboys at the Chapel service last week, managed to be sufficiently inspirational to achieve that honour here. (It was, “If you have the choice incidentally, quite a good week for Guy – going on as he did to score 122 not out between being right and in his cricket match against Selborne.) being kind, choose to be kind” Kindness is something of an endangered species in this competitive world that conditions us to view our daily interactions as exchanges of power or transactions - Guy Rushmere, 2019 of value. Not only is kindness rare, but it is also misunderstood. For many equate kindness with ‘softness’, a sort of pleasant, ineffectual disposition that invariably gets stomped on by an angry world – to be successful (so such erroneous thinking goes) requires toughness, and toughness is brusque, aggressive, and, well, unkind. Nec Aspera Terrent St Andrew’s College Nec Aspera Terrent WEEK AT A GLANCE It is, of course, a fallacy that kindness is a weakness. The ability to stand one’s ground, to be tough when the going requires it, and through all of that be kind, Friday 25 January: is the greatest strength of all. For in kindness there is recognition of the other, there is recognition of the worth of the other and, importantly, there is deep Basketball U14, U15 and 2nd Tour ro recognition of the self. For if one knows one’s self and is at peace, one has the Johannesburg until 27/1 emotional capital to invest in the other. Basketball U16 and 1st - PE Comets Tournament in PE until 27/1 Unkindness is borne not from a position of strength. Instead, it flows from that 12h00 - Golf vs Grey HS (H) place inside one that is feeling threatened, uncertain, inward looking. A place 15h00 - Water Polo 1st team to of introspection borne of self-doubt, of trying to store up self-worth selfishly Paul Roos untill Sunday 27/1 because of a secret sense of deficit. In this neighbourhood of the mind, unkindness (Stellenbosch) lives just down the road from bullying. This sort of outside-in thinking stands in contrast that state of maturity where one lives from the inside out. Saturday 26 January: Irish psychologist, Tony Humphreys, in his book “The Mature Manager” puts it Cricket vs Grey High School (H) thus: “The [person] who leads from the inside out is fully aware that his ability Rowing Settlers Sprint Regatta (Port to put that aspiration into practice is dependent on the extent to which he Alfred) manages self, it is dependent on his sense of his own dignity and worthiness, Tennis TSA Mini Series to 27/1 on his possession of a strong belief in self and on his willingness to continue to (Grahamstown) explore his own giftedness and potential”. In short, we cannot effectively lead, Water Polo vs Woodridge (A) relate with, or manage others until we truly know our selves. Monday 28 January: And in that ‘knowing’ grows kindness. Life is not always easy, bad things can happen to good people, and it is certain that we will need to have tough Tennis: Knowling Shield vs conversations from time to time if we are to exhibit any form of leadership Kingswood (A) along life’s journey. To understand that in spite of all of those things the most fundamental of Andrean qualities is the brotherhood that binds us together; to Tuesday 29 January: understand that we can still recognise the inherent worth of each-other, and be kind. One hundred odd Newboys, their prefects and a good contingent of staff were dropped off at the beach at Boknes where group photos were taken before heading off towards the Diaz Cross and Kwaaihoek Point. The low tide made walking conditions comfortable although some would have found the 10km beach walk quite taxing. On arrival the group enjoyed a braaied lunch and water melon with some time to relax before having a swim in the Bushmans River and boarding the buses back to Grahamstown. Pete Andrew www.sacschool.com St Andrew’s College Nec Aspera Terrent St Andrew’s College is aware of the current water situation in Grahamstown. The boys have made a positive response to help save water. There have been various talks to the boys about their water usage and it has come to mind that showering is where one could make the biggest impact. Buckets have been placed in the Mullins House showers which are being used to flush toilets and to water lawns. The rest of the houses will follow this trend soon. Scott Jackson www.sacschool.com St Andrew’s College Nec Aspera Terrent SPORT Dear All Things have got off to a fast start and most boys have been involved in some form of sports competition already this term. I hope that those that are new to College are starting to find their feet and that they are settling into their new team and sporting environments. Last weekend saw the Water Polo Club playing a series of festival games in Port Elizabeth in the early season Grey High School Festival, whilst the rest of the Club Guy Rushmere were involved in local fixtures at home. The 1sts, U15As and U14As played fixtures against Selborne College, Paul Roos Gym and Grey High School. The U14s featured really well, the U15s found the going a little tough, whilst the 1sts blew a little hot and cold. This weekend the whole Club will be involved in a mix of opportunities. The 1st team squad are travelling to Paarl and Cape Town for a series of training games involving the best that the Cape can offer. They will play a host of games on Saturday in Paarl before finishing off with games in Cape Town. This should prove to be ideal preparation for the SAC Shield Tournament which we host next weekend. The Tournament has attracted a number of the top schools in South Africa and promises to produce some outstanding polo. The 2nds, U15A and U14A sides will play games against Kingswood College this afternoon, whilst the balance of the Club will travel through to Woodridge College on Saturday where Priyank Patel they will play a series of matches against a range of schools. The Cricket Club took on Selborne College last Saturday. The games in East London were played in gale force conditions making matters difficult for the players. The 1st XI batted very well to set up a competitive declaration of 230/5 at lunch, with Guy Rushmere compiling a masterful 122 not out. He was well-supported by Matthew Schaeffer who scored 51. The Selborne openers were extremely solid but never picked up the rate to allow them to launch a bid to win. The result was a fairly frustrating draw with Selborne on 140\4 when the game was called. Whilst a number of other games ended in draws, the balance of the spoils were shared by the two schools. In the 2nd XI game James York scored an excellent 121, whilst Priyank Patel got a quickfire 128 for the 4ths and Thomas Wostenholm took 5\34 5ths U14s at the Grey High School Festival U15B www.sacschool.com St Andrew’s College Nec Aspera Terrent for the 3rds.
