About Historical Seaport
November 8th - The West Coast's Tall Ship, Lady Washington will be making her return visit to Half Moon Bay, CA. While in town, the vessel will be docked at Pillar Point Harbor (One Johnson Pier) and will offer educational programs, vessel tours, and sailing trips for the general public and by private charter. Grays Harbor Historical Seaport, the educational non-profit behind the tall ship, is celebrating Lady Washington's recent 30th birthday. The vessel of Grays Harbor Historical Seaport is among the most active educational boat in America, visiting over 30 West Coast communities each year. The wooden-hulled Lady Washington was built in 1989 in Historical Seaport's home port of Aberdeen, WA to commemorate the centennial of Washington's statehood. She is a replica of the 18th century vessel of the same name which was the first American ship to make landfall on the West Coast. Movie fans will recognize Lady Washington from her roles in Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek: Generations, ABC's Once Upon a Time, and many other features. Wednesday through Friday, schools can reserve a trip aboard the tall ship for Historical Seaport's original maritime heritage field trip Voyage of Explorers. On weekends the tall ship is open to the general public for ticketed Adventure Sails, and occasional special events. Vessel Tours, which take place aboard the tall ship as it is docked in port, take place Friday through Sunday by a $5 suggested donation. Ka'iana, the Once Famous "Prince of Kaua'i3
DAVID G. MILLER Ka'iana, the Once Famous "Prince of Kaua'i3 KA'IANA WAS SURELY the most famous Hawaiian in the world when he was killed in the battle of Nu'uanu in 1795, at the age of 40. He was the first Hawaiian chief who had traveled abroad, having in 1787-1788 visited China, the Philippines, and the Northwest Coast of America. In China, according to Captain Nathaniel Portlock, "his very name [was] revered by all ranks and conditions of the people of Canton."1 Books published in London in 1789 and 1790 by Portlock and Captain John Meares about their voyages in the Pacific told of Ka'iana's travels, and both included full-page engravings of the handsome, muscular, six-foot-two chief arrayed in his feathered cloak and helmet, stalwartly gripping a spear (figs. 1 and 2). Meares, on whose ships Ka'iana had sailed, captioned the portrait as "Tianna, a Prince of Atooi" (Kaua'i) and made Ka'iana "brother to the sovereign" of Kaua'i, a central character in his narrative.2 In the early 1790s, it was Ka'iana whom many foreign voyagers had heard of and sought out when visiting the Hawaiian Islands. Islanders from Kaua'i to Hawai'i knew Ka'iana personally as a warrior chief who had resided and fought on the major islands and who shifted his allegiance repeatedly among the ruling chiefs of his time. Today, when Ka'iana is remembered at all, he is likely to be David G. Miller, a Honolulu resident, has been researching biographical information on Hawaiian chiefs and chief esses, particularly lesser-known ones. -

"Nins tints9 'Village: A Case of Mistaken Identity* STEVEN R. ACHESON The Kunghit or "Southern" Haida village of Ninstints is located on a small island off the exposed southwest coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands. To the original inhabitants, the village was "SgA'ngwa-i lnaga'-i" — Red Cod Island Town. Subsequent to the close of the maritime fur trade, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the village became known as "Ninstints," after the then recognized head chief. The village was significant in size, with a population of 328 people, including 20 slaves, living in 20 houses (Douglas, 1853).1 The island in turn was designated "Anthony Island" during a British survey of the region in 1853, approximately thirty years prior to the abandonment of the village. SgA'ngwa-i village is the only Kunghit settlement generally thought to have been a multi-lineage village for at least part of its history. The village is credited, beginning with Howay (1941 :gj) and most recently MacDonald (1983), as the setting for an exceedingly violent episode in the history of the maritime fur trade on the Northwest coast. This paper contends that, although this conflict involved lineage heads historically associated with this community, the setting was not Anthony Island. * This study draws upon a number of projects conducted over the years at Anthony Island. Accordingly, it involves many individuals and agencies for whom space does not permit adequate acknowledgement. Credit is first given to Richard Beauchamp of the Conservation Division, B.C. Provincial Museum, who introduced the writer to the southern Queen Charlotte Islands. -

TWO CLASSES OF TRAPPERS ROAMED ACROSS THE WILDERNESS OF NORTH AMERICA First and most numerous were the Canadian voyageurs these were mainly of French-Canadian descent -- many were Metis (mixed-blood) people voyageurs were almost amphibious by nature and training hardy, happy and amiable in disposition they glided over every harsh experiences with laughter and a song their quick sympathy and humane instincts resulted in a kinship with the Indians Second group was an entirely different class of men known as free trappers these were usually American by birth with Virginia and Kentucky being home for most patient and unrelenting during their annual trapping trips they were also given to wild debauchery and savage rioting they were bold, overbearing and indifferent to sympathy or company and they were harsh and cruel to the Indians there was always blood in their eye, thunder in their voice and a gun in their hands BRITISH GOVERNMENT RELAXES ITS SYSTEM OF FRENCH TRADING SUPERINTENDENTS British government placed trading superintendents in trading areas oversee operations of coureurs-de-bois (free traders) given privileges to trade in a specific region but, the “Superintendent system” of French overseers proved to be too expensive to administer instead, exclusive French trading privileges were abolished -- 1780 Into the vacuum left by the removal of the French fur monopolies rushed swarms of “free traders” principally Scotsmen from the Scottish Highlands who were contemptuously called “Peddlers” by the long-established Hudson’s Bay Company and -

CAPTAIN SIMON METCALFE AND THE BRIG "ELEANORA."* In the various attempts to piece together something of the life-stories of those whose names are so frequently mentioned in the records of the early days of the maritime fur trade, no atten tion appears to have been given to this interesting man and his vessel. These few notes covering a part of the years 1789-1794 are offered as a contribution to a connected and detailed investi gation of his operations. In October, 1795 John Boit, the master of the sloop Union, met the celebrated John Young at Kawaihae, from whom he learned many things concerning the ships and the men engaged in the maritime fur trade. If he correctly understood and correctly reported that information it may hereafter be found that Simon Metcalfe in the brig Eleanora was not only among the first of the United States traders on the Northwest Coast of America, but also the first-the pioneer. In his "Remarks on the Voyage of the Sloop Union,"l Boit writes: "It appeared that Captain Metcalf had purchased this small vessel [the Fatir American] at Macao after his arrival at that port in the Elenora from the NW Coast and did there fit her with the Snow for the Coast again and gave the command of her to his eldest son". Plainly this refers to the year 1788 and shows that Metcalfe had been trading on the American coast in the season of 1788, thus pre ceding the Columbia and the Washington which did not arrive un til September, 1788. -

Haida Totem Poles: Reflections of a Society Kierstin Doreen Hamilton Abstract The Haida were a First Nations group located on the Northwest Coast of Canada. They were exceptional wood carvers that produced various types of works, the most monumental of which were their totem poles. This dissertation analyses 26 of these open architectural structures, each of which belonged to one of the following five types: frontal, mortuary, memorial, house post, or corner post. Of the representations found on poles, 28 different figures were identified. However, individual poles were found to contain between one and fourteen different figures with frontal poles generally featuring the most. The predominant figures on the inventoried poles proved to be birds, humans, and bears. An iconographic structure of a tripartite character was detected that reflects the religious ideology of the Haida population with birds being featured at the top of the poles, humans in the middle, and bears at the lowest point. It also suggests the possible transition from a hunter-gatherer economy to a food producing economy. Eram excepcionais escultores de madeira, tendo produzido variados tipos de artefactos, dos quais os totem poles eram os mais monumentais. Na presente dissertação são analisadas 26 dessas estruturas arquitectónicas de exterior, sendo que cada uma delas pertenceria a um dos seguintes cinco tipos: frontal, funerário, memorial, trave- mestra, ou postes de esquina.
