Every day others die so that we may live. I realize this simple premise after fieldwork. For six months, during the spring and summer of 2016, I visited 13 southern Ohio homesteads interviewing an intergenerational population, ranging in age from 23-65, about their decision live off-grid in the Ohio River Valley as a form of environmental activism. During fieldwork, I helped participants mix sand, straw, and clay to create cob—one of the earliest-recorded building materials. I attended workshops on permaculture and tiny homes. My participants told me why they chose to build with rammed earth, citing examples from the 11th and 12th centuries. I learned about off-grid living and how to recycle rainwater. I built windows with salvaged wine bottles and framed walls from scrap tires. I now think of home as a material ecology of more-than-human forces that shape identity through habitual action. When we build, eat, or write about home we enter this material ecology. By going off-grid, my participants learn to recognize this material ecology through daily habits of consumption. Here, everyday materials—whether they be a barn, composting toilet, or dragline excavator—cultivate domestic sensibilities as we taste, touch, and feel home. As a sensory ethnography of home, this project examines how some individuals build home so that others may live. iii Dedication For Amanda, with love. iv Acknowledgments This project is about domestic habit. Many of the off-grid homesteaders I interviewed for this project described their home as a more-than-human space of environmental stewardship. Unauthorized duplication or distribution is strictly prohibited. Introduction The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has always been a symbol of Canada's nation-building experience. Poets, musicians, politicians, historians, and writers have lauded the railway as one of the country's greatest achievements. Indeed, the transcontinental railway was a remarkable accomplishment: its managers, engineers, and workers overcame incredible obstacles to throw the iron track across seemingly impenetrable bogs and forests, expansive prairies, and nearly impassable mountains. The cost in money, human energy, and lives was enormous. Completed in 1885, the CPR was one of the most important instruments by which fledgling Canada realized a vision implicit in the Confederation agreement of 1867-the building of a nation from sea to sea. In the fulfilment of this dream, the CPR, and subsequently the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk systems, allowed the easy interchange of people, ideas, and goods across a vast continent; they permitted the settlement of the Western interior and the Pacific coast; and they facilitated the integration of Atlantic Canada with the nation's heartland. In sum, by expediting commercial, political, and cultural intercourse among Canada's diverse regions, the transcontinentals in general, and the CPR in particular, strengthened the nation. Historiography The first scholarly historical analysis of the Canadian Pacific Railway was Harold Innis's A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In his daunting account of contracts, passenger traffic, freight rates, and profits, he drew some sweeping conclusions.

    Discovering the Lost Race Story: Writing Science Fiction, Writing Temporality This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia 2008 Karen Peta Hall Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Discipline of English and Cultural Studies School of Social and Cultural Studies ii Abstract Genres are constituted, implicitly and explicitly, through their construction of the past. Genres continually reconstitute themselves, as authors, producers and, most importantly, readers situate texts in relation to one another; each text implies a reader who will locate the text on a spectrum of previously developed generic characteristics. Though science fiction appears to be a genre concerned with the future, I argue that the persistent presence of lost race stories – where the contemporary world and groups of people thought to exist only in the past intersect – in science fiction demonstrates that the past is crucial in the operation of the genre. By tracing the origins and evolution of the lost race story from late nineteenth-century novels through the early twentieth-century American pulp science fiction magazines to novel-length narratives, and narrative series, at the end of the twentieth century, this thesis shows how the consistent presence, and varied uses, of lost race stories in science fiction complicates previous critical narratives of the history and definitions of science fiction. In examining the implicit and explicit aspects of temporality and genre, this thesis works through close readings of exemplar texts as well as historicist, structural and theoretically informed readings. It focuses particularly on women writers, thus extending previous accounts of women’s participation in science fiction and demonstrating that gender inflects constructions of authority, genre and temporality.
