This fascinating article tells the story of a courageous life. It also gives valuable insights into the story of Friends in Czechoslovakia after Quakerism was introduced there in the 1920s, as well as reflecting on how religious groups maintain or negotiate their integrity in the face of totalitarian regimes. 'BEN' PINK DANDELION Gillian Cookson EDITOR University of Durham, England ABSTRACT This article investigates the central role played by Quakers in the industrial and urban growth of Darlington, focusing in particular upon family and business connections�vith Friends in the City of London. From the launch of the town's famous first railway, to the ensuing arrival of heavy industry in the 1850s and 1860s, Quakers were at the forefront of industrial and urban developments. While Quaker entrepreneurs possessed advantages in business deriving fromtheir access to finance and advice, and from their reputation for probity, the idea that they also had special talents for foresight, innovation and management, is not borne out by the evidence. KEYWORDS Quakers, business networks, Darlington, North-east England, industrialisation, urban development. Darlington, 'the English Philadelphia' ,2 is synonymous \-vith the Quakers who gave the town its early railway.3 The Religious Society of Friends was a vital force in the industrial development of Darlington and of the Te es valley, which reached its zenith between 1820 and 1870.After the Stockton and Darlington line had unlocked this backward region, Quakers were prominent in establish­ ing the iron and engineering industries upon which the area's later prosperity was founded. They also played a leading role in urban development, m Darlington as well as in Yorkshire, where Middlesbrough and the resort of Saltbur n were founded by Quaker enterprise. The story of the Stockton and Darlington railway, and the histories of Darlington's leading Quaker families, Pease and Backhouse, are well docu­ mented.' Executive Summary The ‘greatest idea of modern times’ (Jeans 1974, 74). This report arises from a project jointly commissioned by the three local authorities of Darlington Borough Council, Durham County Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council which have within their boundaries the remains of the Stockton & Darlington Railway (S&DR) which was formally opened on the 27th September 1825. The report identifies why the S&DR was important in the history of railways and sets out its significance and unique selling point.     Volume 3 Issue 15 March 2013 THE PRESIDENTIAL SPECIAL The 19th century saw the Backhouse and Pease family as prominent industrialists in Darlington. They were members of The Society of Friends or Quakers.Their meeting house was in Skinnergate near the Green Tree Inn Behind was their burial ground and beyond that the Green Tree Field where cricket was first played. They wore plain black and grey clothes and the town's football team's kit chose the same colours and of course the football team nickname has always been the Quakers after this society. The backhouse and Pease family acquired land around the outskirts of the town to the south and west. They built fine Victorian mansions and parkland. three overlooked Feethams. Southend (now Bananntynes Hotel) Beechwood and Polam (now a school). other properties included, Hummersknott (now Carmel school), Mowden (the DFE buildings) Blackwell Grange (Blackwell Grange Hotel) Elm Ridge (now a church) West Lodge (DHSS) North Lodge (became a teachers centre) Woodlands and Pierremont retain their residential use. Edmund Backhouse became the first club President in 1866. He was a financier and politician. Born into a successful family at Polam Hall. He Sir Edmund backhouse 1866-1880 was president when regular Saturday cricket came to Feethams. (more on his life can be found in Robert Hattersley's history of the early years) The death of Backhouse in 1880 saw Sir Joseph Whitwell Pease become President. A benefactor of the club, he was a chief subscriber to the club when it moved to Feethams from Park Street. The Pease family were famous for their textile Mill.
